Great staff! Clean facility and flexible scheduling. It's only been a month but I've felt an increase in strength and energy.

I've been a member here for about a year now as it is close to home…read more The place is packed a lot of the time. They have high active membership as there are no other gyms nearby to pick from so let's hope more come into town. With the high volume of traffic you would think they would have a larger more active cleaning staff but nope. They say it is due to the staffing shortage but the place really needs more cleaning and often. There are dust bunnies everywhere, over flowing trash cans and paper towel dispensers run out quickly. The temp is higher than comfortable based on the number of people and the activity taking place. There are many trainers working with clients and they seem really focused. It is great they are attentive to their paying customers but they don't really see or recognize the other people working out are also customers. Thus they are not friendly or pleasant or even acknowledge you exist. I have gone over to ask if I could ask a question and nope...no help. This definitely doesn't make me want to hire any of them to coach me. There are a couple who seem to be very good trainers who actively engage with their clients vs standing around gazing so do your homework if you decide to hire and pay for services. The sales safe seem to be very active in opening new memberships but less interested in keeping the members they have. I am guessing because they have the market cornered in this area. The benches and equipment are starting to show wear and need replacing as the seats have splits and cracks. The classes seem to be full and active so although I haven't taken a class it looks promising and know my husband likes the spin classes, instructors and participants. I also wish they had a community where people could get to know each other. I believe it would be wonderful to have a supportive channel but when I asked...the answer was no and their was no interest in it at all. I've gone to the gym for most of my life and know with social media there are ways for members to engage. Back in the day there were bulletin boards but here there seems like little to no interest in creating a neighborhood unity. It is a fast traffic in and out thanks for your monthly payment. I have a Planet Fitness Black card and have driven over to W Bradenton and Sarasota where I find the experience better. The Sarasota location was cooler in temp and cleaner over all. I am really hoping that as LWR continues to grow more and different options come into the area. Would be great to have a Lifetime and another Planet Fitness here. Maybe then they'd be more interested in providing good service.

Would be nice if the manager at the front desk would greet customers as they enter the facility…read more She looks to be very unhappy to even be here. I have said hi a few times to her but have given up. She seems to have that resting b face which is not a good look for a manager to have.

Having been both a camp counselor and camp director myself, I am extremely impressed with the way that the camps are run. I have a 13-year-old daughter who has an attended the half day basketball and volleyball camp. She is going to attend the soccer camp as well. Her basketball Camp began when all the other camps started as well. Despite multiple types of camps and many children, campers were quickly grouped and joined with their counselors and locations. I have been inside the center while camp is in session, and I am extremely impressed by the way communication works between staff members. Walkie talkies are constantly being used, and students are being counted and accounted for. I appreciate that the pool is used exclusively for campers during the day, to maintain camper safety. All counselors seem genuinely happy to be with their campers, and everything is extremely orderly. Counselors are bright and energetic in the morning at check in. My daughter's counselor Austin comes to check her out in the afternoon and always had a positive attitude and great things to say about her. He is personable and we have seen him outside of camp hours and he maintains the same composure and energy. I feel extremely safe allowing my children to attend camps and activities here. We are also extremely impressed with the childcare center. I have a 2 yr old that has been attending the Y for around 6 months. I drop her off with confidence to three knowledgeable, caring and friendly staff members. She is always happy at pick up and excited to attend. Prior to finding the Y, we were at LA Fitness, where we were extremely unhappy. On one occasion, the childcare supervisor allowed her to play for an unknown length of time in the bathroom. We picked her up soaking wet, with no explanation as to what happened. We still don't know if she was playing in the toilet or the sink. Needless to say, we canceled our LA Fitness membership that evening. As for the athletic club itself, members take pride in the club and are constantly wiping down machines before and after use. There are also staff members on hand who do the same. The group fitness classes are challenging, but also modifiable. The group fitness instructors are positive and energetic, and you feel great after a workout. We are so thrilled to have found the YMCA and are proud to be a part of it.

Items that come to mind are: purchase new flag lines, refinish the pool deck, replace doors in the pump building, install a true water cooling system for the hot summer months, purchase new time clocks, and add new aquatic activities. Note that the pool water is very clean and the lifeguards are attentive. The Y will be competing for members with the county aquatics center opening this fall in Lakewood Ranch. I suggest the Y become more proactive before people cancel their memberships.

Another woman placed her belongings down next to a machine to reserve it for herself for AFTER she was finished with the machine she was working on. I contacted the corporation via email and they said they would put signs up to stop people from reserving equipment but there were never signs put up. I joined this club and paid the extra $30 compared to another club that charges only $10 a month so that I could go in the pool and the Jacuzzi as it helps my pain. The last time I went to the Jacuzzi there were five or six old men sitting in the tub and one of the men was very threatening telling me that everyone took their shoes off before going into the Jacuzzi and I did not (I had flip flops). I wondered, were these losers kicked out of their senior communities? Why were all of these men there at the same time? When I started at the club there was a younger crowd and I liked the fact that I wouldn't have to use my parent's senior community jacuzzi and be hassled by mean old people there. This corporation is doing nothing to improve the club. It's going downhill. It makes me wonder if they're trying to make members want to leave so that they can bring new members in and charge higher fees.

It's been a challenging journey of recovery, surgeries, and physical therapy. Although it has improved over time, my back remains delicate. I joined 7 months ago with high hopes, but it turned out to be a bad fit. The workouts often aggravated my lower back issues, despite the excellent form corrections from Shakira. She was great, but I couldn't always attend her class. Additionally, half of each of the classes involves treadmill work, which isn't suitable for spinal cord injuries. I initially looked forward to using the rowers but they weren't used in the programs as often as I'd hoped. My membership allowed for cancellation at any time (so I thought), and my billing date was the 13th of each month, paid in advance. To cancel, I visited the gym on 8/28, where Marielle was professional and provided the cancellation form. She mentioned I'd be billed again on 9/13. While I was fine with paying for the period from 8/13 to 9/13, I disagreed with being charged $109 on 9/13...weeks after cancellation. I requested Mark, the GM, to call me. Time passed, but Mark didn't call. On 9/17, I spoke with Abby at the front desk and asked her to relay my message to Mark, but still, no response. The following week, I talked to Marielle. These are the games they play. There is no other logical reason for the extra hoops, other than to rip off their members and grab an extra couple $$$ from them. It is estimated that Americans pay $400,000,000/yr in unusable gym memberships and unreasonable cancellation fees. The gym industry as a whole normalizes stealing money from hard-working families as part of their business model, and OTF Lakewood Ranch is no better than joining in on the same unethical practices. That being said, I've run and owned businesses for 19 years, and the first sign of a toxic manager is an inability to address customer issues or return calls. It's a simple yet crucial aspect of building goodwill and should be a top priority for any manager. Anyway, Mark finally called me back after nearly a month and was immediately defensive and condescending. He insisted I should have read the contract, which he said required 30 days' notice given 30 days before cancellation. Confused, I asked, "So, 60 days' notice?" "NO! 30 DAYS! READ YOUR CONTRACT!" he snapped. I responded, "Mark, that math doesn't add up. I canceled on Aug 28th; why should I pay for almost 50 days I can't use?" "Well, you can still come in, so you're not paying for anything you can't use," he mocked. "I can't use it. I suffered a severe lower back injury in the Army when I was 21. It's not suitable for me," I explained. He cuts me off "Well thank you for your service." He replies like a sarcastic teenager. I picture him holding his nose and sticking out his tongue as he says it. "But you should have told me about your injuries before you canceled, but I think you're just trying to scam me now." "So...I'm required to tell you private medical info?" Mark carries on about contracts... The next day, Mark emailed me a copy, but the cancellation policy he described was nowhere to be found. After reviewing it with my wife and an attorney friend, we couldn't find anything remotely resembling what Mark had claimed. I've attached the contract he sent to this review. After several emails and calls from Marielle, I was told I had signed an old version of the contract, and the new version had the cancellation policy Mark described. "So, you should refund me based on the contract I signed, right?" "I'd need authorization from the actual owner to do that," was the response. That was five days ago At this point, I don't expect a refund. If OTF needs the money so badly that they resort to ripping off disabled veterans upon cancellation, they can keep it. My experience with Mark was the worst interaction I've ever had with a business. From the moment he called me, he chose an ego battle over doing what's right.
