But it is, and the store itself is lovely with the books split between two barns. The upper barn (as was explained to me) is where the majority of their fiction is and the best prices on used books. The lower, or main, barn with the cash register has their newer and rarer inventory. The floor is a bit warped so just be careful with your step. Weird little place in a weird little space. The whole store is under lock and key--one must buzz-in…read moreby telephone request unless one has made a prior appointment to access what could be a browser's paradise. The owner (as he announced himself) is, on every third Thursday of each alternate month, a nice-enough-fellow full of the love of books. But every other day at the store, he cements his love of books at the cost of a passing indifference for his customers that borders on hostility. While the book selection is as comprehensive as it is well-organized, something about the place seems... well... 'off.' It's as though one is being watched--or rather scrutinized--by unseen eyes, suspicious you may be replacing a book in the wrong place, disturbing the piles of rarities without regard to how the newly imbalanced feng-shui will impact the owner as he lingers scowling from the sequestered bowls of the shop. The books are, nevertheless, excellent and priced clearly in the "almost-too-expensive-but-still-just-affordable" range. Comparatively, the prices here are fair to good. You will not be finding any shocking bargains or hidden but neglected treasures here. The books are carefully selected, after all, and intended to turn a profit for the owner. After all, buying low and selling high is the name of the game--and yet, listening in on the owner's bargaining with one collector attempting to sell her books, I'd say there are fairer prices to be had from other buyers. But after exhaustive talks ranging from condition to author popularity (when has it been hard to sell Orwell?), she settled on a price with our peculiar host all the same. It was, in a word, creepy. Upon leaving with my new acquisitions, I was reminded of John Locke's description of this weird trade which combines refined erudition with predatory avarice: "Printers, binders, sellers, and others that make a trade and gain out of them have universally so odd a turn and corruption of mind, that they have a way of dealing peculiar to themselves, and not conformed to the good of society, and that general fairness that cements mankind." True enough of this odd little place, I thought. And then I went home, placed the books on my desk, and retired to take a nice long shower.

They all laughed. After that, I took a cursory look at the fiction section. Then I wanted to look at the nonfiction section, which was next to the book club. I observed them for a minute out of curiosity. The novel they were discussing seemed interesting. I then spent a good five or ten minutes skimming through a book I found interesting and looking up information about it online when the owner walked up to me and asked me to go to the other side of the store because she thought I was eavesdropping and worried it might make the others uncomfortable. I apologized and sat down in a chair for about half an hour while I waited for the meeting to end so that I could browse that section again, but I eventually had to leave because I ran out of time and needed to be elsewhere. The book selection looked good from a distance. Wish I could have checked it out. At least I got to pet a dog, though.

Don't try to shift the blame to me. I was never delinquent picking up my pull list other then when…read moreI decided to stop patronizing your store. "Constantly asked for exceptions to store policies" is a load of crap and you know it. Don't lie, Dan. I was never anything but a loyal customer. If you want to air out grievances here on this public forum, I can gladly do so. Why don't you talk about how miserable you are and how it reflects in your customer service? A few other reviewers seem to have the same thoughts about that. When someone walks in the door it's a toss up if you'll get Harvey or Two-Face. Most of the time it's the latter. Or should we discuss how you put RFK Jr. campaign flyers in your customers' bags and then badger them about his policies? Or how a simple question about moving turns into a political debate with you? How about how you allow a gaggle of idiots to stand around your store cursing while children are present as you laugh along? And the only reason you stopped was because your wife said something to you? Would you like me to continue?

I must have driven by Dan's shop a million times until I finally stopped by back in March. I hadn't…read morecollected comic books since I was a kid and I never had enough money to be that serious about it all those years ago. So when this middle-aged dad finally ended up in the store I wasn't sure what to expect from Boom Tube Comics. I knew bits and pieces from a lot of pop culture and just my own casual interest over the years, but still, I thought trying to get back into comic books would be confusing and intimidating. I'm happy to say that it turned out to be exactly the opposite. Dan has created the kind of comic shop in Boom Tube Comics that I think every fan or collector hopes to find. From my very first visit, he made me feel welcome, never talked down to me, and was incredibly patient in explaining how comics and his store works. He's a wealth of information too, from subscriptions and FOC dates, to special series, blind bags, conventions, etc. No matter what your level of knowledge is, he meets you where you are and seems to genuinely enjoy helping people learn more about the hobby. Dan's always happy to talk about local artists, comic book history, recommend an interesting/popular book, point out books you might otherwise overlook, and even suggest trustworthy online resources if you want to learn more about collecting or comic history. You never feel rushed, pressured, or like you're asking a "dumb" question. The man has patience for miles! On top of that, Dan has a terrific sense of humor that makes every visit enjoyable. It's the kind of place where you stop in for a few books and end up spending extra time just talking comics or cracking jokes and getting sucked into whatever is piquing your interest that week. His prices are fair for key issues and incentive covers, his customer service is exceptional (Shout out to his wife Karen, appreciate all you do too!). If you're hunting for an older issue, he's happy to check his back catalog to see if he has it. Subscribers are treated like royalty, he bags and boards books, slaps a discount on for you, and goes out of his way to make sure subscribers receive the best copies. He has a lot of gratitude for his regular customers/subscribers and it really shows that he wants them to have a premium, yet still classic, comic shop experience. The shop also has an excellent selection of toys, collectibles, and nostalgic items that make browsing as much fun as shopping. This a great TOY STORE TOO! I wasn't sure about diving back into comics in some ways, but Dan made it super easy and fun. If you're a longtime collector, someone returning to the hobby like me, a complete beginner, it doesn't matter. I truly can't recommend Boom Tube Comics highly enough. It's a fantastic local shop run by someone who truly loves comics and genuinely cares about the people who walk through the door. Support our local businesses! I should've stopped at Dan's shop the very first time I drove past it, DON'T make the same mistake I did.
