I came across this place on yelp and gave it a try for my long due haircut. Parking: Ample parking as it is in a complex which has Starbucks and other stores. We got a parking spot easily. Service: Really good service. I got my hair styled by Diane for my graduation. She styled my hair beautifully and I never curled my hair before. It really looked amazing. Wish I had a picture of my hair to post. Diane is amazing and takes her time to make the hair look beautiful. She knows what she is doing. Better to book an appointment if you are going on weekends. It gets pretty busy. Price: Reasonable price for haircut and hair styling. $40 for my long hair, which is acceptable for me. Would definitely recommend this place. read more

My review is solely on first impressions and my experience. If you want to know about their services, prices, or who is the best hairdresser to go to, this isn't the review for you. The first time I came to this location was about a month ago. My Starbucks stop was quick and had some extra time before work so I stopped in to get a quote on eyebrow waxing. When I walk in the door, I was asked "can I help you?" but it was with a really irritated tone and a frown. I asked for the price for brows and what time they closed and she was really short and reluctant to answer. Maybe the fact I was dressed down and looked a bit like a hot mess made it seem like I wasn't a serious client and maybe a waste of her time. I blew it off and decided to go somewhere else and I would come back when someone else was working. I think the woman I spoke with was the manger or runs the shop because I ran into her again today. I lost a set of keys and thought that I may have dropped them in the parking lot this morning. I figured that I could ask all the other stores in the plaza and come to the salon last so I can get my eyebrows done. As soon as I walked in the door, she was pissed off again. This time she was working, another woman was sitting down by the register area and there was a third woman that had been standing in another work station. The other two women didn't acknowledge me the entire time with the exception of there glaring at me. I had the same "can I help you?" with an upset tone from the same woman. Instead of the other two women helping me out, she stopped a haircut in progress to ask me that question. I thought it was weird but at least she acknowledged me. It went down hill from there. I explained her that I lost my keys and was looking for them. She asked me "what" a couple or times so I repeated it. The entire time she looked really angry and kept staring at me and my car keys. Once she understood my story, she said "no" really short. I asked if I could leave my name and number if they turned up and she started doing the gentleman's hair again and and loud said "I'm too busy to help you right now. Bring me a paper with your name and number." I asked her if I could just leave it on her business card and she just kept saying louder and louder "I'm too too busy right now." I looked at the two other women working and asked "can someone else grab a business card" and she kept repeating the same thing. The other two women just stared at me. At that point I decided to not even mention that I wanted to get a waxing service. She didn't have anyone waiting, but she was so angry with me that she most likely wouldn't want to help me either. I wouldn't be comfortable with her helping me either. I'm sitting in the car, in tears because I don't understand why she had to be so rude and angry. I don't know why she was so upset with me. Maybe she thinks I'm broke. Maybe she doesn't like my hijab. I don't know what her problem with me was but this is the first time I've been discriminated against to the point it broke me down. I could go back in there with my number on a back of a piece of receipt paper now, but I don't think I can set foot in there again. I doubt they would bother to call me if my keys turned up. I see a lot of positive reviews on here, and I'm glad that people have had great experiences. I love to support small business and see Bay Area residents survive our struggles with climbing rent and other issues. I'm not seeking any time of retribution for my mistreatment. I just want the staff to know that how they treated me was not okay. Discrimination is not okay. read more

She has moved to her own location which isn't far from her previous location. Its about five minutes away. Her new location is really nice and everything is new!! I HIGHLY recommend Sam's services. She's considerate of your time at the shop, I've never met a stylist who cares about the health of hair the way that she does, and she's flexible with booking appointments. 6+ years and still going here for Diane. I tried another place once (costed me $45+tip), and I did not think it was worth the amount because the style was similar to my $15+tip haircut from Diane. Even though I do not style or "put up" my hair as much, I still manage to have a korean inspired business style haircut. Plus, I still keep true to my words when Diane is not the type of Vietnamese stylist who does not listen to you. If you choose to cut your hair shorter or what not, she will offer you advice or her opinion whether it is a good idea (or how it may turn out). So... the choice is YOURS if you want to take the advice or not. Overall, I still highly recommend Diane if you prefer to have Asian inspired hairstyles. read more

I have been going to the Elegant Curl for four years now. My personal stylist has been Diane. About a near four years ago when I was getting into Japanese fashion, I ended up going to a barber who messed up my hair bad. After dropping by Mitsuwa market (which is next door) with my friend, we ran into Diane's shop. On the window were pictures of Japanese men with all the cool Japanese haircuts I wanted. She then came outside and confronted us very kindly asking us if we'd like haircuts. My hair was still short but I asked her for a card so I could get back to her. After a month, I came back and Diane fixed my hair up so beautifully. She even found out my previous-previous stylist had damaged my hair (bleaching process). Diane has been cutting my hair, dying it, and waxing my eyebrows now for a near four years now. I have always been highly satisfied with her work and I love talking with her because she is so down to earth, friendly, and mother-like (my vietnamese mama lol). Prices are also VERY affordable (12 dollar cuts for men, 20 for women, 10 dollars for eyebrow waxing, 60-65 dollars for first time dye and 30 dollars to redye--but also depends on length). I got my long, straight Asian hair cut by Sam, and it was so horrible, I really should not have bothered tipping if she was going to stare me down, waiting for me to tip her. I arrived early for my appointment (I was first of the day) and she was busy doing what looked like a friend's hair, and she did not even address me until twenty minutes after my scheduled appointment time. Major turn off. I asked for a mere relayering, and all she did was cut a straight line across the bottom, chopping three inches off my hair. I told her I was displeased and wanted her to fix it. She then began to flat iron my hair, exposing it to so much heat that I watched my hair smoke. I told her time and time again to stop putting a flat iron to it because I have STRAIGHT HAIR. She refused to use water, she kept at it with the straightener. It was obvious to me that she only knows how to cut super curly or African hair. Many more debacles followed, including Sam not putting nearly enough layers that I had asked. I had to tell her about five additional times what I wanted, and I still didn't get it. At the end of my appointment, my face was blank, and she said "Just let it sit for a couple days and come back later so I can fix it." WHY WOULD YOU STOP IF YOU KNOW IT LOOKS TERRIBLE? Worst appointment of my entire life. If you even bother coming to this place, try that Diane person instead. Avoid Sam if you have hair like mine. read more

It's been about 2 weeks since I got my hair cut. I started noticing that my hair was looking choppy last week... and today I noticed that the ends of my hair is almost at the point of splitting. I rarely use hot tools and I always let my hair air dry. I also never get split ends until after almost about 8 months of my last trim. I will not come back here because I think flat ironing my hair and then using a razor immediately after to cut all my hair has caused damage. Sam is nice. I went to another salon because elegant curl moved from Cupertino to this San Jose location and I didn't know. I've only gone to Diane 2times in my life, and haven't been to a salon other than those 2 random occurances for over 12 years. I've been cutting and doing my own hair for that long. Sometimes I can't see the back of my hair and I need a pro. Diana is so far, the ONLY barber that listens intently to what I want and can visualize it without a picture. Went with boyfriend to his regular hair place. He has a thick mane and goes every two weeks to keep it maintained and thinned out. His go-to stylist is Dianne, and I went to try it out. The first thing I noticed was that Elegant Curl has a modest looking theme. It's basic, white walls with tile flooring. Nothing spectacular. However, they had people walking in appointment after appointment. Dianne even had to reluctantly turn someone away because her schedule was booked.. on a Thursday o_O. They play chill, relaxing old-school instrumental music, so if that's not your style, bring earphones and your iPod. Anyways, Dianne spent good time on the details. She made sure that the overall shape was perfect before letting boyfriend leave the chair. Similarly, she made sure my layers were perfect and made sure to straighten my hair to double check. I just got my regular hairstyle: medium length with layers from the jaw on down. It looks sleek and good both up in a ponytail and down. Boyfriend kept trying to mess up my 'do cuz he wanted to touch my hair -___- It's also pretty affordable. Most places I go to for girls' hair is 35+, but it was 25 for me and 15 for the boyfriend. Sam is the BOMB!!! I have been natural a little over a year now and really needed to have my ends clipped. I recently took out my twist braids and figure I would try to find someone in the local area. I was a little skeptical because there were no recent reviews...don't you just hate that?? LOL Anyway, I called Sam and she was able to see me the same day!! I went in for a wash/set and to have my ends clipped. Sam took her time, wasn't rushed at all. I really dislike going to a stylist that is working on more than one person at a time, which I noticed when I arrived. So, I did have a short wait. Anyway, Sam hooked my hair up. I needed much more than a trim, I ended up needing a cut; which I didn't mind because my ends were really damaged. I loved how my hair turned out!! She really takes her time and is attentive. She's also funny too. Tip- call and make an appointment. Before her, the last time I got my hair cut was at a Korean salon, and looking back on that haircut, it was pretty bad. It was a good cut, but just looked bad on me, if that makes sense. Not to mention they charged $35, and were super snobby to me. Diane is complete opposite. I've been cutting my own hair since then, and she noticed right away something was wrong with my hair XD I loved the way she cut my hair since I went very short, but she made me look good haha. My boyfriend's gotten numerous cuts from her, and he always comes out look hot. We went to the barber next door once, and they butchered his hair. After we started going to Diane, but since we always did walk-in and she was busy, he decided to try the barber again. Once again, they butchered his hair and completely ignored what he said. Diane is amazing. First off with my boyfriend's haircut-- she is very precise and takes her time. She makes sure that everything is cut evenly and the way that you want it; asking if you want it thinner, shorter, ect. With my haircut-- I came in asking for a huge change. At first she was hesitant and was truthful to the fact that she hasn't cut hair in such a stylish manner in a while. However, she took on the challenge and I wasn't afraid of her messing up. She took her time and there was no rush at all which I like a lot. She creates small conversations here and there to lighten up the mood. She made sure that the layers and length of my hair were the way I wanted them to be. Came out beautiful! She really has talent. My family and I came here for Dianne after being recommended by a few friends. She did a pretty good job the first few times. She usually takes time on the hair cut that shes working on but my sister and I have had a few bad experiences with her and we're going to look for another salon. For me, I wanted a haircut after I got a digital perm that was growing out. She went off on me about how it was uneven for half an hour even after I told her to hack it off and I nearly walked out except for the fact that it was almost chinese new year and I couldn't get a haircut for a while after thanks to superstition. At that point, it was just wasting everybody's time and was extremely upsetting. If I agree with you and tell you to cut it short, you don't keep ranting for 20 more minutes. Another time, my sister got pretty much ignored and got a sloppy cut that she kind of rushed through. Overall, shes a solid hairstylist and pretty cheap, but we won't be going back because I don't appreciate being yelled at or having my time wasted. *If you go into get your hair dyed, don't wash it the day before! I am very picky with salons and my friend recommended this salon where she gets her haircut with Diane. I wanted a hairdye with highlights. On the day of the appointment, I arrived early but she came in late and then I had to wait more because she had to finish the haircut of the person before me. So 30 minutes later she attends to me. I was so excited because she had very good feedback on this site and my friend also had good experience with her. Well not for me!!!! She started dyeing my hair portion by portion. Halfway through I could feel a stinging sensation in my scalp. I told her how I felt and then she tells me that she already had an inkling that that would happen because I came in with newly-shampooed hair. Now she tells me that I shouldn't have shampooed my hair!!! She should have told me when I made the appointment!!! Anyway I didnt have a choice but to go on with the hair treatment. The whole time I was in pain until the end of the entire experience. She said the pain would be gone in a few hours. Well it did...when I got home it wasnt hurting too much anymore. The color and highlights looked good but I wasn't satisfied because of the pain I felt during the treatment. She told me not to shampoo my hair for 2 days. Today is the 3rd day since my hair coloring treatment and I finally shampooed my hair. While I was drying my hair I noticed BIG BIG FLAKES of DANDRUFF all over my hair!!!! The hair treatment totally destroyed my scalp and made it super super damaged!!! I went back to the salon and showed DIane what happened to my scalp and she was just so insensitive acting as though it was my fault that I had a bad scalp!!! I never had dandruff until this Diane girl touched my hair!!! I VOW NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER TO GO BACK TO DIANE NOR TO REFER HER TO ANYBODY!!!!
