Probably the best place in town to play pool, with plenty of tables available. They have some good live music nights as well....

This is going to cause a split between you esteemed readers but hey call it Marmite, you love it or hate it. That's what you get at the Elbow Room. Quite simply it's all designed around an American styled pool bar. Not your usual city centre fare at all. If it's pool you are looking for then you are on too a total winner. It's pool-tastic, in fact pool heaven maybe. To the tune of 14 tables to get potting on. Plus if you like your sport, double happy days. With 14 plasma screen and TVs spattered across the venue, you can see all the top sporting events and some. So it is geared quite heavily that that particular crowd but it's not exclusive to it. You'll find a mixed crowd. Students love it, lads love, groups love it and hey even girls love it. Why not. You can also grab a distinctively American/tex-mex bite to eat. From nachos to burgers it's diner type food so don't expect any more or any less. I always think there is a time and place for a burger and a beer and it does seem to fit perfectly here. My tip would be garlic flat bread though and a side of wedges, just leave the calorie counter at home. As for the drinks? Worry ye not. You can choose from numerous beers, wines and even Champagne if the mood takes you. Failing that the cocktails are a good bet, short and long, classic and unique. It's not to everyone's taste. In fact I've got to be in the mood. But as different kind of venue to meet up with friends it's definitely worth checking out. Plus the late finish is a distinct advantage both through the week and at the weekend.

I like The Elbow Room, and I'm really glad there's one nearby. Not because I've got aspirations to be the next Stephen Hendry, but because it reminds me of my college days, hanging out with loads of my mates, and just chilling around a pool table, with some drinks and good company. My old pool and snooker hall wasn't really a patch on The Elbow Room, it was more old man's vault in the local pub than swish and stylish American style cool. The Elbow Room trumps my old haunt for many reasons, it's stylish, it has elbow room, it's all new and clean looking, they serve food, ladies play free on Thursday, free games on Monday and fiver all day Sunday, but as most of the regulars are aware of this, it's busy, the food's good, there's a variety of drinks, it's open late, we're talkin 4am Friday and Saturday, and it's good to do meet and greet and mingles with colleagues, good ice breaker I would say. Where old faithful is better is in the price department, no more 60p per game prices here, more like £6 an hour if you don't take advantage of the offers, so aye, for beginners who take a good hour for a game, it's a bit wasteful as I doubt many amateurs are in the ten minute game time frame. Blending the day with the night, table prices go up, between £9 and £12 depending on time of day and table reservations, but after you've had your fill of the pool tables, there are gigs to indulge in, and what I really like about the gig nights, is that they still hold them when the cheap pool offers are on, whereas normally you find they save gigs for big price nights only. Depending on your level, and your interests, this is either a great idea or a complete waste of time.

It has been around for years, and as such is undoubtedly the most established snooker place in Leeds. The ground floor houses dozens of full sized snooker tables, on which you will find both professionals and ultimate beginners trying their luck in a chilled out masculine atmosphere (I've never seen a female in this place). You need a membership before you can play (you can sign up for a year for £4 or become a day member for £1), and you then pay an hourly rate based on how long you were on your table. This rate varies but it seems to be in the region of £5 an hour - obviously, this is halved by the fact that you and your opponent can share the cost, meaning it's a pretty reasonable rate. Upstairs is Stateside Pool, an American themed area stocked with pool tables and cheesy decor - your membership allows you to use either floor whenever you so desire. Food and drink is relatively cheap, and on the same standard as a pub lunch (they even offer a roast dinner on Sundays for (£4), but the best thing about Northern is that it is only shut for two and a half hours a day. Thus, if you like snooker or pool, and you like playing it until 7AM, you need to get to Northern.

But i have to say i was blown away a bit by this place. Now it wasn't busy that was true. For a friday night i might have expected a few more punters. Then again i could only just about make out the far wall. There are a supreme number of tables, all full sized American suitable flanked by yankee paraphernalia and ambient setting bits of ephemera, signs, American footballers and a pretty well stocked juke box. For a place seemingly out of the way the bar was exceptionally cheap and in my entire evening there i never queued once for a beer. I haven't much to quantify the rent of a table but £10 deposit returned and £10 for the four hours i feel i spent playing pool all seemed very worth while to me. The whole affair felt a little like entering Ned Flanders Rumpus room, a massively well stocked and ordered version of your own dream garage conversion. A little playground on the outskirts of Leeds!

The Brudenell is a small, intimate venue that has played host to some of the city, county and country's greatest bands. It was where Leeds favourites The Cribs chose to host Cribsmas, a special three-gig event where they played each of their albums in full with b-sides forming the encore. The support acts - Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and Kate Nash - sum up the attraction and character that the Headingley venue boasts. A number of bands - including the Kaisers - have lent their support to the Brudenell, which very nearly closed a few years ago. Thankfully it didn't and it remains one of the most charismatic concert halls that Leeds has to offer, hosting breaking acts including the likes of Girls (go listen) and Johnny Flynn (same again) in the next couple of months. For full listings, go to brudenellsocialclub.co.uk. In the meantime, just pop in for a pint. They always taste nice at the Brudenell.

I saw Wooden Shjips here in April 2010 and it was fantastic. What's more, despite being sold out, it wasn't over-crowded, the bar staff were efficient and prices were reasonable. Plus there is another bar so you can get away from the loud music if you want to. There's also a cab firm close by so it's not too hard to get home. Highly recommended! Updated Just to add a few further words of praise. This venue consistently stands out as the best I know of in the UK. As other reviewers have said all the people who work here are really friendly and are a lot of fun. I've never seen any trouble inside and it made me realise that I've never seen a bouncer in there either although I'm sure they know how to cope if things do get heated. At the end of the headline band's set there is no hassle to leave like so many paces (O2 Academy, Cockpit). If you fancy another drink they are relaxed and that's cool. What a refreshing attitude. I've seen so many bands here and it's easily my favourite venue anywhere - so many great memories! The thing that says it all is that if I am hesitant about seeing a band but then discover they are playing at the Brudenell my mind is immediately made up and I go. Wish it was within walking distance of my house!

It's impossible to think of how this place was that, now that it's had a re-fit. My mate and I were trying to suss it out and, although I like a lot of the elements, it's a bit disjointed -- there's beautiful tiling at the entrance matched with quaint al fresco style cafe tables and chairs, placed next to diner-ish booths, with a big open hall of a space by the bar, replete with Victorian boxer images on the walls. It's all lovely, but I'm not sure it matches. We decided it might be a sports bar for hipsters. There are TVs everywhere and lots of advertisements for the upcoming games they're showing. I don't know much about footie, but there is lots being shown, so I guess it'd be the whole season. Or what ever you call it. I didn't dig the "commandments" that pop up on the screens -- the cult thing is too force fed for my tastes. I didn't like it about Reds and I'm not a fan here. I wasn't sure I liked content of the messages, either. Speaking of Reds, that's pretty much how I'd describe the branding vibe here, only they're preaching footie and boxing and other sports over ribs. What did I like? The bar staff -- these guys were really solid and good fun. Hard working, fair at the bar (I hate it when they don't serve in order), and made a damned fine drink. Before even getting started, he asked how I like my daiquiris: nice. I said a teensy touch on the sweeter side, but not crazy. He let me try it before serving -- also impressive -- and it was way up there in my top daiquiri times. Appleton White was the go-to: good call. To established cocktail folk, I guess that doesn't sound amazing. However, you'd be surprised how hard it actually is to get a decent one -- even though they should always be a basic balance -- so for that I was really chuffed. Clientele weren't my scene, but it was Friday night? Anyway. If you want a good cocktail, seems like they've that covered... which feels a bit strange when surrounded by spray tanned ex-Gatecrashers (I'm guessing?) next to Liverpool vs Arsenal (the first teams I could think of) but perhaps this quirky mix is part of the charm. Or part of finding their feet. Check 'em out. They also serve pie, I think!

The bar staff are fab and offer cocktails not on the menu, such as espresso martinis (my fave). We had some fun trying different versions and they were goood. FYI Tia Maria can work instead of Kahlua. They have created an outdoor area for the summertime which as a location has much to be desired (right next to a very busy road) but is still nice enough to be in the sun. The bar itself inside is nothing to write home about and is a little dark for my taste but they do have a pool table and a table football (not many have these too and I enjoy it a lot). I will be going back here, especially as it is dangerously on my walk home from work.
