I have many friends across Canada that tell me the food at this chain is not bad at all…read more Unfortunately, that's not the case at this location. Food and Nipigon is hard to come by as it is but this place shouldn't even be on your list. The service was terrible and the food rivaled that. We wouldn't return even late at night when everything else is closed. This is unfortunate as this place is open 24/7 but as bad as the food was we can't stomach another round. I started with the homemade soup of the day and nothing in it resembled anything that was homemade. It tastes worse than something from the grocery store that's been sitting in a can for three years. Let's get back to the service. Our server had a terrible attitude and didn't know the menu at all. Even with the restaurant not being crowded it was a chore to get her to refill a drink or even crack a smile. In fact 20 minutes after we finished our meal I walked up to the counter and asked if I could pay the bill since our wonderful waitress never came back. Let's talk about the King of the Road Burger, which is supposed to be one of their signature items. I visited with a guy that's six-foot-seven and 350 pounds. He lives off stuff like McDonald's. The burger was so bad he struggled to eat it. It tasted like a frozen patty with absolutely no flavor at all. Even ketchup couldn't cure the taste. The french fries were just as bad. Personally, I went with the hamburger steak and I couldn't have picked a more poor item. This steak had absolutely zero flavor to it and the mushrooms that were in the gravy tasted like they were five years old. Terrible quality when it comes to food. We knew that the food here wasn't going to be good period but we did expect it to the edible and it wasn't. We ate as much as we could and drove down the road to Timmy's to grab a few snacks instead before going fishing. The food and the service was that bad.

If you ever find yourself in Thunder Bay -- Tomlin is absolutely a MUST. Arguably the most upscale…read morerestaurant in town, it doesn't have a pretentiousness that you encounter at some places. Rather, the friendly service, innovative cookery, and high quality, locally sourced ingredients speak for themselves. I was in town to celebrate my birthday and this place was so special. Also if you want something a little more casual, they have a pizza place a few blocks away tucked inside a brewery, which is also fantastic!

I think they originally intended to give us oysters or tartare but because it was so late into the evening, they made something else. You can tell the chefs/cooks really do make most things from scratch because the wait/gap between courses was quite long (~30-40 min). We got to try a total of 11-12 dishes: 4 appetizers, 2-3 mains (depending if you count the sausage and chicken dish as separate or one), 2 sides, and 3 desserts. I have no idea if/how the dish count fluctuates depending on group size. We were told that the tasting menu differs every night and even between parties/tables on the same night -- they change it up depending on group preferences, dietary restrictions, and ingredient inventory. Overall, I really enjoyed our meal. The portions were generous and filling, and the variety was nice. I would say the appetizers (especially the veggies & sauces) were more impressive than the mains. I was hoping for more interesting proteins in the main course, but no complaints on the cook or seasoning. They might save the nicer proteins for the more expensive tasting menu ($85 pp). The desserts were really creative and delicious. Miso in a dessert is definitely innovative! I wish I could tell you the names of every dish, but I could barely hear the server / remember what everything was. From what I know, everything except for the desserts aren't on the regular menu anyway. Overall, I had a wonderful time and would recommend trying the tasting menu for an interesting and filling culinary experience! It certainly is good value, as you wouldn't be able to find a tasting menu of this quality/price in Toronto! Note: Tomlin only accepts reservations for groups of 6 or more.
