Atomic Garage is an amazing vintage clothing and vintage store in the trendy area in Des Moines... the owner/manager is super chill and a fun person who takes her vintage clothes seriously. Their selection is awesome and reasonably priced for how rare some of it is. It's definitely a great place to stop in when you're in town... and an even better place to stop in when you need a badass outfit to go to a formal event with. It's super well organized and just an overall fun store to walk around. The only reason I took a star off is because some of the stuff isn't for sale. It's only for rent... and that disappointed me. I don't live in town, so I couldn't rent the incredible options of suits/tuxedos that they sell there.

Today it was two weighted blankets for $20, at least 50% lower than new at Walmart, not sure if that is their norm. I did not buy today. I have not been interested in buying anything there in a while, but I am also finally downsizing and more likely to take items in. Often see used, but retail bedding. I think it is a good place to find items you need for setting up a household. Regardless, twice monthly 50% off days are bargains and the parking lot will be full. Compare to some thrift stores they are higher priced, others lower priced. I believe they have a clothing credit for people in need. It appears there has recently been a turnover in staff and volunteers, and I am not sure what that is about. TBH, there have been many changes with Caring Hands in the last five years. TBH, a lot of the local donors don't have much to give and will donate crappy pieces. Caring Hands has to sort through that. Last I heard they donate the worst to DAV. Facebook Marketplace killed the "lucky find" thrift model for a lot of small towns combined with the current economy. For those struggling to make ends meet, there is often some free bread in the thrift area, and in the summer free produce as well... to supplement anyone. I believe books are still free there, but call ahead if that interests you... you will be lucky if they answer.
