A decent gastropub that has a strong focus on fish. Well it did last night which as it was a Friday seemed like a good idea to someone who is a connoisseur of the Friday fish concept. And my rating does nothing to move the overall rating as I join the ranks of 4/5 reviews. So well away from my manor, a great suggestion by a friend brought us the dukes head LB as tweeters/face bookers would find it. A lovely aroma of fish and garlic met you at the door as you walked in; unfortunately the human welcome was not as attentive as the culinary one and an unnecessary wait to get our pre reserved table was not a good start. Wasn't obvious that they had someone owning the process of saying hello so a small queue of reservists and chancers ensued. Especially given the place wasn't packed but more modestly stocked with customers, especially for a Friday night. No checking if wanted a drink at the bar first was also a service and indeed revenue miss. And when we were sat down two too early interventions on readiness also missed the rhythm of service. After that though all was fine on the service front. Menus are well stocked and varied, complimented by a decent selection of specials. My friend and I decided be nice to go for a sharing starter and opted for baked Camembert. It was tasty but I've had better. For mains my friend had the sea bass and was happy with her selection. I went for traditional fish and chips which was plain and simple but well presented and tasty complimented by mushy peas that would render me a southern softy if I described these as such back in the motherland to my Yorkshire mates. However nicely minted and well presented they were perfect. We had order some steamed shredded greens and creamed spinach and both of these too were well presented and similarly tasty. Further menu caressing resulted in a shared earl grey creme brûlée accompanied by the mandatory shortbread biscuits and this too was faultless. I do wonder why the urge is so popular to flavour a perfectly lovely creme brûlée with the tipple of choice from an early Victorian prime minister. Anyway nicely finished off with a mandatory peppermint tea. Drinking was limited given I was over the border and had to drive back over the Thames and leave the land of fake tan, white stilettos and TOWIE behind. And that's just the boys! An early gin and slimline for us both was fine but unremarkable. Overall decor was well designed in if a little bit predictable. The sheepskin throws on the chairs was a nice if not increasingly common touch (my local gastropub does exactly the same). The New England inspired touches, whilst increasingly the design of choice seemingly for many an ex boozer, were nicely executed. Overall then happy with the experience. read more
