I happened to be flicking through Yelp the other day and noticed he had opened his own shop with business partner Fabian. Naturally I had to pop along to check it out. It starts with the offer of a cold beer, a comfortable barber chair and a proper consultation about what exactly you are looking for. It then progresses to more hot towels than first class on an Emirates flight and finishes with an amazing head massage which Luke modestly suggested is the reason why people keep coming back. Luke is a really good barber. If the council drafted him in to do all of the road markings in Dublin city centre you could be guaranteed all of the lines would be perfect angles, such is the talent on offer at The Fireplace Barbershop. This is no chop shop so expect to pay a little bit more than your average. In my opinion this is more than just a beard trim or a hair cut. Its an experience - a treat for any man who wants to show himself that he is deserving of such attention to detail. Lots of Barbershops have popped up nowadays offering things like beers and old school fades - but not many are as special as this one on South William Street.

I also like their attention to detail and checking exactly how you like your hair cut. I did laugh when asked if I wanted my eyebrows tended to as well. It'd be one thing if I had a brow like Scorcese but I don't so I politely declined. It might be a touch on trhe pricey side but I'd rather have a decent haircut than be scalped like has happened in other places that just want to get your hair cut and herd you out the door.

Ironically, it was finally finished when the recession already had Ireland in his grip, but never the less I hear that the rent for the top penthouse is in the several thousands region. Anyhow. The Barber shop is "Grand", like the name says. The team is friendly and last time I went there (a friday evening) the place was full, but thanks to the efficiency of the people I didn't have to wait too long. My hairdresser was a nice hungarian lady and the chat was interesting and not of the "artificial" style I always experience at other hairdressers (like the hairdressers from hell - chain "Peter Mark"...). I got a free delicious coffee with it and if you happen to work for Google you even get a 6 Euro discount - so all in all great stuff: I found my new personal shaver! :)

Hakkan handled everything with complete professionalism. I got a better haircut than I could have imagined, along with straight-edge razor attention around my hairline and beard, and had the fur singed off my ears (always exciting!) all for the regular price (which he's giving at a 2 euro discount while it's still new, so it was only 15 euro). I was nervous, and have 'my person' back home, but the guys at Crew were very professional and did a great job. I walked right in on a Saturday and was out of there in 15 minutes. There were ladies in there too, so it isn't just a guys barbershop. For €14 I was very pleased and will be coming back about every 6 weeks.

So the student offer is €10. Monday to Friday. Before 12.30. Sounds great right? Well it is a good price but once they find out you are a student the treatment on offer is polar opposites to full price treatment you get. Don't get me wrong. They ain't treating you badly but the attention to detail is just not there. I was asked if I was a student when I sat down in the chair. [I must be looking like a student these days and need to sort that out immediately. This is not a good thing.] Do you have your student card with you I was asked. I did. He proceeded. He did a good job on my hair but if I am honest I was skeptical as it was so so quick. But on further inspection afterwards it was good. For a mid week morning it was busy. So be prepared to wait. I think you can make an appointment though if you get a name of a barber you like. I think the normal price is €22 so €10 is a huge discount for students but it is not the same experience if they are aware of your student status pre haircut. Will I be back? Of course. It was a good cut. I may just dress up a little so they don't presume I am a student. Jeez I must have been dressed like a total skank.

It is very strange to do a review of a barber but this barber I think is a place where I actually…read moreI like to go to get my hair cut, the location is excellent, right in the heart of Dublin, the staff is very friendlily and professional, give this place something different from the other barbers in town, The inside is very cosy and I like the old fashion style decorations which make me feel very comfortable. But the best part is after I got my hair cut and you walk out of the barber you are right in the city center and the all city gets a different light.
