This place is very unique to say the least. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I will give kudos to the ambiance of a normal old school bar that caters to mainly the black gay community and everyone seems to know each other very well. I believe this is the only one in town. It looks really outdated and just dirty behind the bar. The drinks are cheap and strong which is why people probably come back. Also, there is no food, don't come hungry like I did. Oh dear. Even 2 weeks later I can feel the effects of the Long Island Iced Tea I ordered. Wow. This is your typical neighborhood fun bar but with a twist. While they don't serve food, the bar was packed and the customers around the bar were all in great spirits. We walked here from Grand Central, and felt safe doing so (FYI to other out-of-towners). The crowd was mixed; old, young, etc., but everyone was happy, though I felt somewhat like an outsider for some reason. So happy we came here, and even happier that Uber picked us up and brought us back to our hotel safely after a super strong LIT to end our bar-hopping night. read more

I'd say this is the worst experience I have ever had. Initially the guy at the door told me I couldn't go in because my I.D. is horizontal and not vertical. I told him the I.D. was valid and clearly displayed I was over 21...he said it was the "law" (I had been to 8 other bars in the area that weekend before this incident and had zero problems) and told me I could get in if I gave him $20...I obliged only because I was meeting a friend, also from out of town. Once inside the place was very dirty and stunk of marijuana. I ordered a Lager and the glass tasted like dish soap. The bathroom had broken glass on the floor and the sinks didn't work. I used to frequent The Drinkery regularly with my little brother when I lived in the area. It's usually a little cramped but always a good time. I stopped in again last weekend with my bro for a few drinks. We found a spot at the far end the bar and chatted with the owner, bartender and a couple of other patrons. My bro is a regular so he knows a lot of people. OZ, the bartender, was super cool. He chatted with us for quite awhile and made some pretty good drinks too. The drinks are STRONG and well worth the money because they're pretty cheap. It was pretty late so there wasn't any karaoke but that's usually a pretty good time too. I've had some of the best laughs drinking and watching people sing karaoke there. The bar is normally crowded and last weekend was no exception. But the crowd is low key and friendly. There's never any drama or off the wall behavior. The bar clearly caters to the LGBT community but everyone is welcome. Being a straight female, i have always felt welcome and included. read more

I haven't been to The Drinkery in two years. Why have I stayed away so long?! Truly the best bar in Baltimore (not that I've been to all of them). Dive bar definitely describes The Drinkery. The oversized bar was a bit excessive, as I don't think they had the wells or staff for that. It was tight to walk around the stools at the large bar, and we felt in the way. They also had a small bar in another room, that was a bit more comfortable. The music was all newer hip hop. The funk...I don't know what the hell the smell is but if it weren't for the bartender I would give only 1 star. But as another Yelper mentioned, no one seems to care! This place is a hole in the wall, and when I say hole in the wall, I mean it. I imagine it has not been remodeled since the early 1970s. The walls are purple and the wall art is handmade rainbow flags. But honestly, I do not think anybody cares. I neither do I. Everyone is friendly and everyone knows each other. I would call it the gay Cheers of Mount Vernon, where you can get two beers for five bucks. Yes you read me right and a good brand beer at it too. Cute bar love these hole in the wall dive bars and the LGB community is fun, and really crowded on a Friday afternoon, so service was a bit slow and was hard to get a drink. Staff was friendly and the drinks where tasty. Pricing was typical and I had some good conversions over my whiskey sour. Differential plan on going back again when i'm in the neighborhood again. Spent the day shopping and it was a nice place to relax before heading home. read more

I reside in Washington dc and whenever I visit my friends in Baltimore we tend to bar hop. I have visited this bar on numerous occasions and it seems to be a pretty rather nice place to visit. I have never out of all the times I have been to the drinkery experienced any odd or bad behavior from any of the patrons the atmosphere is really very comfortable and the bartender is such a nice guy I don't recall his name but whenever I'm in the area it 's a real treat to stop in and say hello to him he is a great guy with a superb attitude and a smile you would die for. there has been a couple of times he has frequented the bar where I work in dc it's such a treat to see him I 'm saddened about the closing of the bar when I first heard the new I was in disbelief I really hope they will regain the license and reopen I trust they will read more
