Before retaining him, I specifically explained that my priorities were pursuing financial discovery, valuation of my ex husband's medical corporation, hidden income concerns, and a Family Code §2640 reimbursement claim exceeding $126,000. I was assured that these issues would be aggressively pursued and that his office had substantial experience handling high conflict financial family law litigation. I then spent months gathering and providing detailed financial documentation to his office, including bank statements, contracts, financial records, and evidence I believed demonstrated financial concealment and inconsistencies involving my ex husband's business operations. Despite this, meaningful discovery efforts did not begin until very late in the case. Subpoenas and discovery were initiated only shortly before the February 2024 trial date, leaving little time for proper follow through or enforcement. As trial approached, I became increasingly concerned that the case was not prepared for trial despite having retained counsel months earlier. Instead of moving aggressively forward with litigation, pressure shifted heavily toward settlement and Mandatory Settlement Conference discussions immediately before trial. Mr. Seidel repeatedly expressed skepticism that my ex husband's medical corporation had measurable value and characterized it more like a "loan out corporation" rather than a profitable medical business with enterprise goodwill and ongoing contract relationships. Yet the court later reserved jurisdiction over business valuation post judgment and moved toward appointment of an Evidence Code §730 neutral valuation expert. He also advised that my §2640 reimbursement claim was likely not provable despite my possession of checks and written documentation supporting the separate property contributions. I later prevailed on that claim at trial and was awarded reimbursement exceeding $126,000. One of the most difficult aspects of this experience was the repeated feeling that my concerns regarding financial concealment and economic abuse were not being taken seriously despite the amount of documentation I was providing. I have since come to believe many women experience what I call the "Cassandra Effect" in family law litigation: women raise concerns regarding hidden income, financial manipulation, coercive financial behavior, or business irregularities, but are treated as emotional or unrealistic until evidence later confirms many of those concerns. Ultimately, I achieved significantly better results at trial than what I had been repeatedly told was realistic or likely achievable. My experience with Joel Seidel left me feeling unheard, poorly advised, and pressured toward settlement despite substantial unresolved financial issues. With the help of Your Document Assistants we were able to have our Living Trust set up in no time. Ernesto explained to us very thoroughly what the Living trust entailed and how they would be able assist us, he is your go to guy. Last week I finally got around to change a few things that were no longer current in my trust. Met with the notary at the Document People who had me fill out a worksheet about the changes, charged me $129 and called me the next day to go and sign. I'm still waiting for my attorney - who quoted me $950 - to call me back about getting started. Sorry buddy, too late! Get your stuff in order, these people are on top of their game! read more

Last year, after my mother passed away, my father wanted to put his house into a living trust. We went to see this lawyer together. Since my parents had purchased their home as "community property without rights of survivorship", I knew this could be an issue. That type of ownership usually means that when one spouse passes away, probate is required because their share does not automatically transfer to the surviving spouse. Probate is exactly what we wanted to avoid because it adds time, stress, and extra fees. So during the very first visit, I specifically asked if that would be a problem. She confidently told me "no, that should not be a problem at all" -- that she could fix it, and the process should go smoothly in just two visits. Based on that reassurance, we moved forward and paid her half of the total fee as a down payment. However, later that same day, she called me back and said she had actually run into a problem with the house being under community property. She then referred us to one of her colleagues to handle it instead. When I contacted that lawyer, I was told it would cost $6,000 just to remove my mother's name and transfer the property deed into my father's name. That was a huge and unexpected expense we were not prepared for -- and exactly the type of problem I had asked about in the beginning. To be fair, she is polite, professional, and very nice in person. She also speaks Spanish, which was great for my father since it's his native language. But I left feeling that she hadn't been completely upfront with us. At first, we were told it would be a simple two-visit process, but once we had already paid, the story changed and the costs went way up. My advice: she may be a good lawyer, but do your research, ask very detailed questions, and get everything in writing before moving forward.

I encouraged my son and daughter-in-law to also try them for their tax preparation. They are more angry than I am as his incompetence cost them thousands of dollars. Villegas and Associates has lost all three of us as clients. We were assigned to Orlando. Orlando can do a basic return, but the slightest issue seems to create problems for him. He is less than enthusiastic about finding ways to save money for his clients. You are expected to know exactly what you can write off. He never makes suggestions to help you find tax savings. The client is expected to know the tax code and what expenses may be available to itemize. He entered the incorrect information about an EV. He got the make and model wrong despite having the purchase agreement with all information clearly provided. It should have been a four thousand dollar rebate. Since he did not enter the correct information, the rebate was denied. He said it was my daughter-in-laws responsibility to call the IRS to straighten it out. I knew this was wrong and spoke directly with Benny Villegas about this and several other issues of concern regarding Orlando. Mr. Villegas agreed that it was Orlando's responsibility to file an amended return. He ASSURED me that he would have Orlando complete the return in order to obtain the rebate. He also asked for email evidence of other issues that we discussed. I provided the email the following day with a cover letter reiterating our concerns. It has been a week since our meeting with Benny Villegas. He did not respond to my letter. He did call my daughter-in-law to arrange a meeting on a Saturday morning. Orlando was at the meeting, but Villegas did not participate. Orlando seemed more interested in how many times my daughter-in-law attempted to call IRS than correcting his error. To date, she has no knowledge that he has filed the amended return. He claimed he was going to send the amended return AFTER he spoke with the IRS. However, she is unaware if the IRS has received the amended tax return. According to the IRS website, Form 8936 was improperly filled out due to the wrong make and model information; action is required to correct it. There is no further information. A follow-up call to the office revealed that Orlando hasn't worked all week, and there was no information available about her amended return. Neither Orlando, nor Benny Villegas has communicated with her. The level of incompetence and utter lack of disregard for accuracy is appalling. His refusal to take responsibility for his errors and his insistence that she correct his failures is unprofessional and unacceptable. According to an email that was circulated to his entire client contact list, we are not the only clients who are choosing to take our business elsewhere.
