I tired to eat a Sunday Roast here but I couldn't score a ressie when they dropped at 2am US time. Luckily, they drop ressies a few at a time, so after my 3rd attempt, I was able to get a ressie for a regular dining time during the two weeks I'm in London. Sadly, no Sunday Roast for me but let me assure you the regular dining is worth it to get! So if you don't score a Sunday, grab another date! Our lunch today was absolutely the best food we have eaten in London! We ordered the Waygu Steak, roasted carrots, sea bass, fried chips, and a potted shrimp starter. They also passed out delectable rolls (the kind you could eat 3 of before you forget you got other stuff coming) and of course, they have beer!! They are known for pouring the most Guinness in London but let me tell you their Timothy British pint is just as good! So get both! So I have to say the scores here are wrong. Having tried another pub rated the same score as Devonshire and experiencing The Devonshire you can see that what your reading on Yelp isn't truly representative of how good the food is. Service and wait can go any which way in a given day but let me tell you everything we ate was just absolutely delicious. I need to know the recipe for those carrots. And the duck fries and that Waygu steak. Basically, I'm still thinking about my lunch! And I want to know how to get into the special grill room? lol Anyway, I don't get to London very much anymore but if I do return, this is the pub I'm returning to eat and drink at! Oh! Very solid establishment with good service and food. They come around with a tray of warm rolls, which is always a great start. Highly recommend the value dinner, we both got it! It comes with a sizable skirt steak and choice of sauce, chips, and sticky toffee pudding (with custard or ice cream) for 25 pounds. We also added a side of the glazed carrots which had such natural carrot sweetness and flavor. For 25 pounds we got a lot of food, and didn't finish everything. The sticky toffee pudding was just the right size and I loved it with the ice cream. Go here before a show! I want to try for Sunday roast now. read more

Probably the hardest place to score a resy but if you follow the detailed instruction you may have to wait up around 2am pacific time and can potentially make a reservation but yes reservations are all gone within a minute's time. Is it worth the effort? For sure! Everything we had was perfectly cooked the British pub style. My scallops in their shell were baked perfectly and super fresh. The split pea soup with ham was amazing and great starters. The half lobster was moist and fresh. Really good! The pot pie was heavily. Glad we ordered that instead of a filet or a porterhouse as the pot pie is dedicatedly uniquely London. Service was spot on. Ambiance is vibrant and mostly local. Love it! read more

Run! Don't walk to this amazing place. Devonshire is the place that sells the most Guinness in the world and watching them pour all of this liquid gold is worth coming alone. We also ate a 3 course dinner that was to die for. If you are at all interested in traditional English food, try the suet pie, you will not be sorry. Don't look up what suet is though. The toffee pudding was my favorite and I could have eaten 2. Service was quick and we were in and out before a show even though they were slammed. I think the food was good, but this place is overrated. The service was great from the guy (I think he was a food runner) who served the bread and took my order, but horrible from the woman who was technically my server. She was passive aggressive and not friendly or attentive at all. The meal started with a lovely salted milk bread roll and the salt added the perfect touch for a variety on the palette with the light and airy bread. I ordered the set menu with the steak and toffee pudding. The steak was cooked perfect but lacked flavor, and I wish it was warmer when it came out. I paired my dinner with the house red wine and it well with the set menu, and it was very smooth. The toffee pudding was rich and decadent, a great treat. Overall the experience was fine but I wouldn't go back or recommend it. read more

Wow, first off, this place gets CROWDED, I mean like, very crowded. If it's a nice day, the outdoor drinking space really makes it doable, otherwise not sure i'd walk in if the approximate 80 people that were outside were now crammed inside. Thought we'd have to wait for an hour since it was very packed in/outside, but to order, you can walk directly in and to the counter, no line and ordered instantly. Ordered a Guinness at the counter (amazing price). Got a couch table shortly even on a busy night Seeing the crowd drinking outside on the street felt thrillingly illegal since we cant do that in the US. The food was incredible. The taste, the texture. If I got back it's really only for the food. The service was so bad. It was almost embarrassing for us. We were sat down a bit past our reservation time which is totally fine and normal. They told us as soon as we got to the hostess stand that it was a bit behind and we had no problem with that. We were told to wait outside which I felt was a bit off. We went to the bar for a drink until our turn was up. We were sat to a beautiful little table. The setting was incredible with silver setting. Our table was towards the back and omg it was SO. HOT. We were the table closest to the cooking and it's a cool idea. A real fire stove but my necklace was heating up with the strength of the fire. I was so uncomfortable. My jewelry was literally hurting me!! The service was slow and inattentive. We waited to be addressed but after a while of getting too warm. We needed to wave someone down for water. It took a while to get to us which I get. They were running around. We then had to have someone down to get some of the very delicious bread being served. We were told our waiter would get it for us and we let them know we hadn't met them yet and they looked a bit shocked. They ended up bringing us some bread. The scallops were absolutely divine. I would order this again and again and again. So savory and buttery. So good! We ordered the lamb chops and beef suet for our main. I had never had beef suet so this was a first. The inside was good but the outside was a bit too soft for me. More than likely that's a personal preference though. The lamb chops were very good. I was a bit appalled as one of the servers had very long hair. She went to place something at the long table next to us, flicked her hair, and it hid my husband in the face. It was pretty funny because that had never happened to us so it just felt fitting with the way things were going here haha. All in all: the food is worth it. The table setting is great. This was really incredible. The bread/butter, scallops, ribs, pork chop, chips, and carrots are all basically perfect. Dipping the bread in the juice under the scallops is the ultimate pro move here. The Duke is perfect on a warm day. The garden is absolutely beautiful and huge!! I've been there on a couple of really hot days and have always been able to sit outside. The Pimms cups are amazing and enormous so you won't leave walking upright. The interior has been redecorated recently to be super comfortable. It's well finished with leather booths, engraved mirrors, chandeliers, carved wood, and stainless steel finishes. But in my opinion it's a bit over the top--maybe simplifying the number of patterns and materials would help. The food is at the top of the pub scale--it's fresh and hearty and seems a little healthier than most. Although I could be totally wrong on the health front. If you're lucky enough to head in on a warm weekend, don't miss the BBQ in the garden. read more

Re-visited the Devonshire last night on a crawl of Balham's pubs. This pub has a nice feel to it - it's relaxed, good crowd, friendly bar staff and really decent food. The low lighting and chirpy chatter from all around means it has a welcoming atmosphere. Not the place for a wild night of debauchery, but you could easily drink a whole bottle to yourself without knowing it! I like old style decor pubs like this. I like thinking I ought to be wearing a top hat and a waistcoat and playing with my moustache. read more

Despite this being a Saturday evening, we were able to secure a couple of tables for our fairly large group and settled in in comfort to get our drink on. It's a pub and we didn't try the food (although what we saw go past us from the open kitchen looked mouthwatering) so not much else to say. Would like to add that the staff weren't friendly (they weren't unfriendly...just meh) and the manager refused our request to turn the music down a bit so we could sing happy birthday but I suppose in hindsight that's not a big deal. As I walked through the doors of this Victorian pub/restaurant, I was surprised by the size of it (from the front it's not obvious that the inside goes back so far). It has an instantly warm feeling, full of comfortable leather sofas and cushioned booths. While chandeliers, low lamps, candles and bacchanalian murals on the wall give the place a lavish vibe, the stucco ceilings are high, the floor and tables are polished wood, and the wall paper is velvet flocked, adding to the grandiose yet trendy tone. It was a Sunday night when I went, but the bar and restaurant were both still full of groups, conversations in full swing, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Just past the bar where the main restaurant area is, there is an open kitchen - so you can watch your dinner being made! The chefs all look fantastically professional in their clean white outfits, and the silver surfaces are immaculate. It definitely gives you confidence in the food. As for the prices, all the main courses were over £10 with options like 'Butternut Squash & Rosemary Risotto' (yum) to 'Slow Cooked, Pan Fried Pork Belly'. The food is good, but again, I would be tempted to seek better value further along the high street. Awful. Went here in 2009 when I was heavily pregnant and once we had sat down we were asked to move as we were in the 'dining' area, even though we were ordering food! So we found an uncomfortable bar bench (which was 'so' ideal for an 8month pregnant woman!). The to top it off my fiance was given the wrong meal (he ordered beef roast, he got lamb) and the food was not that great given the prices they charge. To be honest, the minute they asked us to move ruined the whole lunch. The staff weren't even polite about it. We have never been back. Shows how far good hospitality goes. read more

This Pub is now called 'The Devonshire', and is one of my favourite bars in Balham. Very large with a superb beer garden at the rear. Food is not bad, perhaps a little pricey. Lager is great with both Peroni and Kronenbourg on draught. Plenty of stools, leather chairs and sofas to cater for small and large groups. Great atmosphere on Friday and Saturday evenings. read more

This is an opulent pub! It's not really a pub at all, it's too nice for that name. Amazing food, huge well-decorated space (with chandeliers!) which boasts very comfortable and numerous leather seating. There is a very large garden area which boasts a huge outdoor grill for barbequed food nights and many outdoor heaters. I went here for a private party and the canapes were fantastic, and included caviar blinis and all sorts of other indulgent treats. The reason it doesn't get a fifth star is because it's far too fancy for a pub, and should really just make itself into a restaurant and be done. read more

Visited the Devonshire for the first time last night. Huge space with a very large beer garden in the back (although way too cold to make use of it last night) Food was of acceptable quality and good value with the deal that they are currently running (2 mains and a bottle of wine for £20) There also seems to be a good number of 'events' including a pub quiz that was happening at the same time -- although the place was big enough so that you hardly noticed that there was one going on. An hour's wait for warmed-up pies, with no warning when we ordered, no explanation during the wait, and no apology on either of the two enquiries we made or when the food finally arrived. In fact, we were essentially told that we should relax like everyone else. I do not go to pubs to be patronised by the staff, thanks very much. Put some extra staff in the kitchen, train your staff in basic customer service and if this is a dodgy tactic, hoping that we'll just drink more while we wait, stop it. This pub has just had a big refurb and the interior design is beautiful - it really has to be seen. There is plenty of room to sit, eat a light bar snack or you can sit in the restaurant at the back of the pub which has doors onto to an amazing looking beer garden which I imagine will be heaving in summer. After being so wowed by the interior, I was ready for a taste sensation with the food but was sadly disappointed. The starters were such a rip-off (a fiver for thai fishcakes which were tiny and you got just 3) and the aioli dip to go with the prawns had no flavour at all and was actually inedible. The mains were an improvement (pie of the day) and much better value although there was a scanty gravy portion which meant the whole thing was a bit dry. The waiting staff were really unattentive and when I complained about the starters, the waiter said he'd pass that onto the chef, but nothing further was offered. On the plus side, the bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. I'd stick to the Devonshire for drinks. read more
