When I called to book my appointment, Chanel was incredibly understanding and truly went the extra mile to find a time that worked perfectly for me. You could tell she genuinely cared about making things as easy as possible, which immediately set a positive tone. Stepping into the office, the atmosphere was a breath of fresh air. No bland waiting rooms or soul-numbing TV screens here! Instead, everyone was so welcoming and attentive, making me feel comfortable right away. Then there's Dynay, who handled my X-rays. She was just so gentle and reassuring, explaining everything in a calm, soft voice. It really made a potentially awkward part of the visit surprisingly easy. And Dr. Victor? He was fantastic. He really listened to what I wanted and took the time to discuss all the different options available, making sure we landed on a plan that fit my needs perfectly. (Reposting since there are two entries for this practice) I gave Dr. Victor 3 years of chances and the experience never improved. At first I liked the eco-friendly vibe, but it does not make up for the unprofessional practices. Each appointment felt like a first time because neither he nor his staff review charts before meeting with patients! I have to re-explain my dental concerns at every appointment. In an instance I mentioned to a tech that we were watching a specific tooth (because they obviously didn't read my chart), but my concern was disregarded. The staff habitually disregarded my input, talked without facing me, and insulted me to peddle cosmetic procedures. In one instance, Dr. Victor told me that my sealants were "fillings." And he didn't believe what I said about some other dental work until performing root canal. I continuously felt ignored any time I spoke up. Billing is always a surprise with this office. I asked for teeth whitening refills and the front office tried to charge me the $300 for new trays that I had already purchaseddid my profile not show that I was already fitted? At my next appointment (6 months later) I asked another person, who finally gave me a refill and charged me the appropriate $30. The only positive I can say about this office is that I was fitted for a night guard that has been quite helpful, but that is it. Nothing about this practice was "holistic," they never asked me about my overall health or medication history. After numerous mediocre and disappointing visits, I started paying attention to the newsletters that this office sends (they send many emails and texts!). They peddle numerology, astrology, and other pseudosciences as classes! That was when I realized it was time to find another dentist. This dental office is full of money hungry individuals who don't care about you. I pointed out a tooth to the hygienist during a routine cleaning and then again to Terry Victor... and they both ignored this tooth. Both said they didn't see a problem with it. I told them both, I felt the cracks in the tooth and the increasing sensitivity in this tooth. They allowed this tooth to remain untouched and ignored. Neither of them told me to use a sensitivity toothpaste either. I couldn't take the ignorance to my discomfort and obvious poor service. I went to a detailed and qualified dentist who told me immediately, that it was no longer a regular cavity anymore since they had ignored it so long... it now required a CROWN. I'm honestly not trying to be funny, but I wonder WHY Terry Victor wasn't able to see the cavity?? What was the hygienist excuse? Inexperienced and NOT her job .. possibly her job is to upsell Terry Victor's price for hearing my question only...and calling it an "exam" to make sure to charge me extra for something that should come with the cleaning... When no one actually examined my entire mouth or teeth. SCAMMERS. Well thanks to him seemingly ignoring my tooth.. I now am in the process of a crown instead of a simple cavity filling with a new dentist. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. I met Dr. Victor at either the 2015 or 2016 Green Festival. He was very personable in his presentation and offered a raffle drawing for free consultation. A friend and I won the raffle and scheduled our appointments. We were satisfied with the visit. Soon after I scheduled a follow-up and have been a patient ever since. The office is bright and comfortable. I enjoy the music played throughout the space. The staff is friendly. I have had satisfactory and pleasant service. No pain, no discomfort. I've had several basic exams and extensive procedures performed by Dr. Victor, Dr. Daniel and his associates/hygienists. I've only had 3 dentists in my lifetime. My childhood dentist retired after I went college and the second dentist I had once I relocated to this area. The DC Dentist makes 3...they took great care of my mom. They are holistic in every way and understand the mouth's pathways and connections to the rest of the body. I'm a licensed mental health therapist. This won me over. The team also looks like me. Cultural competence and understanding of my medical history as a black woman is extremely important. I like they review your x-rays in front of you at all times and speak in plain language about projected treatment. They don't immediately resort to a root canal or crown before assessing other options. One's mouth is the beginning of your digestive system and in Eastern medicine, is considered tied to major organs of the body. Disruption is not easily reversed. Today I'm waking up after a nap from a 2-hour appointment of major dental work. Outside of my jaw being sore from applied pressure (I have all my wisdom teeth), I feel nothing and my teeth are on the mend. I was offered lavender this morning after sitting in the chair among other aromatherapy/homeopathic options. It's the little things. I hummed along to the likes of Erykah Badu, Solange, Jhené Aiko (over the procedure). Dr. Daniel's bedside manner is unmatched. I also enjoy Kiana. I admire their teamwork in such a small space--my mouth--with a bunch of tools. Parking can be a bear. You know, DC. After years of support, I came across a bit of hard times and had to cancel an appointment. Once I got my finances back in order, about a year later, I set up an appointment. Since my child was a toddler, I've brought him to the dc dentist. They were well aware that we don't x-ray our child until he is s 12. This was confirmed before the visit and they encouraged me to come. This man that I've supported for almost a decade, this man that shook my hand and acted like a friend, would not even talk to me. Instead I was chastised for not taking x-rays. I was belittled and demeaned by a group of unfamiliar women and he refused to speak to me. So I wasted my time in horrendous traffic to be disrespected and refused service, after they told me to come in. I just wanted to support black business but now I support good business. My partner and I recently moved to the area and we wanted to find a well-reviewed dentist close enough that we could walk to. The DC Dentist certainly has a number of glowing reviews, that's for sure. So we set up 2 appointments and asked if they took our insurance. We both have different providers, but we were told that wasn't a problem, that they took both of them. Soon after, my partner had an emergency where he basically needed half of a tooth replaced. Thankfully, they got him all fixed up within a week or so. Not too long after that, we had our regular cleanings and things again went through without much of a hitch. They said they were having problems with his insurance, but they said his provider was notorious for being difficult to deal with. About a week or so later, we started getting letters from my partner's provider saying his emergency procedure claims were denied and they would only pay $70 toward the cleaning, as the dentist was out of network. After multiple calls to both the insurance and the dentist, we confirmed he has the worst dental coverage in the world and the dentist won't so much as take payments toward the procedure. They claim they never told us that they take our insurance, but that's irrelevant. The point is that they are completely inflexible and would rather risk losing a customer than take installments toward a debt that includes a $1500 procedure and $200-worth of cleaning charges, both done without a word saying that they wouldn't be covered. So instead, they will lose 2 customers. Plenty other dentists to choose from. read more

The DC Dentist is hands down the best dentist I have ever visited. They are extremely professional and kind. I hadn't been in a while and it was as if I hadn't missed anything. They remembered me and what we discussed as if it was just the day before. Dr. Victor is also very knowledgable and I really appreciate his approach and care he takes with his work. They also think whole body and don't forget that what goes on in your mouth affects the rest of your body. The office is clean and the atmosphere is relaxing. It literally pains me to write a positive review of a dentist, since by the very nature of what you're doing here, misery is inherent. But, all that being said, the DC Dentist is actually a beacon of hope in the barren wasteland of my oral decay... Everything about this place is perfect. It's super clean, easily accessible, efficient, and unendingly friendly. From the lovely lady who runs things up front, to all the hygienist and right up to the doctor, everyone is unfailingly welcoming. On top of all that, they have all the modern amenities without making you feel like they are wasting your money with a bunch of extraneous bells and whistles. I especially love the text reminders to your cell two days prior. No calls, just a nice easy text that you reply to, perfect. My wife and I have now had several visits each here, and have nothing but positive results to report. They haven't tried to over-sell anything, and have explained everything very clearly. And, they go out of their way to explain why and what they're doing. And a new one for me, they actually took a picture of the tooth that they were going to work on, not an x-ray, but an actual picture and then showed me on the screen exactly what they were going to do, which was a new one on me, but I really appreciated the extra effort to let you know what they are doing. And, in a final touch, their chairs are massaging chairs! I don't know if all my other dentists were just slacking, but these chairs make it so much more relaxing! A lot of you guys are giving 5 stars because he uses the word "holistic" and the staff smiles at you a lot. Please don't walk but RUN from this place. I came in for a routine check up and was told I needed 4,000 dollars of work done! I had two back to back pregnancies and had a condition called hyperemesis that causes non stop vomiting for months! I knew I needed work done because HG can cause damage to teeth. His tech was so passively aggressive and keep taking about fees as I'm sobbing in the chair trying to figure out where I'm getting 4,000 dollars from for this deep cleaning that was basically "life or death" the only times they follow up is to ask me if I have money for there overpriced services. This total was mind blowing to me because my mother in law is a dentist and I've seen her for years, but lives in far in MD so I can't see her offen. After meeting with two other dentist and my MIL I was told I didn't need anywhere close to the amount of work I was being charged! STAY AWAY FROM THIS GREEDY OFFICE. I won a free cleaning to the DC Dentist from the DC Green Fest at the end of May. This would have been a lot more beneficial six months ago when I didn't have insurance, but in any case, I thought I'd check them out. Signing in was easy breezy. The Dental Assistant greeted me with "Welcome to Paradise!" HA! I wouldn't go that far... They started with the X-Rays. That went well enough. Once the dentist started cleaning my teeth, I noticed he didn't have a dental assistant. I thought that was really odd, but I guess the dentist could handle everything on his own? Not really. He couldn't get the water pick to work, and as he was trying to get it to work, he left the vacuum thing in my mouth. It started to dry out my mouth, so I had to remove it from my mouth myself. Once the dentist noticed I was holding on to it, he took it from me. Thanks? Even though I wasn't very pleased with the missing dental assistant, I was very satisfied with the customer service. I received a link to a survey via e-mail. Since I wasn't too pleased with the lack of a dental assistant, I immediately filled out the survey. I received a reply back within an hour. I am an extremely nervous dental patient but at the hands of the amazing Dr Terry, Tochi and Kwesi I had an extraction, two fillings and still left smiling and laughing. Seriously, have you ever laughed in the dentist's chair?? I did!! So many times! At the start I had a full assessment, x-rays and then a detailed explanation of what the state of my teeth was. I was kept abreast during every step of the process and Dr Terry checked my pain levels at every single point so that I experienced absolutely no pain or discomfort. I was so happy with my experience here that I decided to write my first yelp review. I met Dr. Victor at the DC Greenfestival and entered a raffle where I won a free cleaning,exam, and x-ray. When I went in every single employee was upbeat and friendly. I found myself in the waiting room next to a man who takes the bus down from NY just to go to this dentist and then he goes back up north! My exam and cleaning went great and then Dr. Victor showed me around and explained all the green elements of their building and practice. They didn't miss a single detail from floors to windows to ceilings to lighting and so on. Beyond that, they minimize chemical and plastic use in their dental work. Update: Let me respond to the office here. I did contact the office - 4 times via email. Most emails weren't replied to. When I asked for documentation regarding the surprise bill amount I was resent my invoice via email. I was also sent another patient's information. I responded to resolve it and to let the office know they sent me another patients info, as I believe that could be a privacy or hipaa violation - however I never heard back. 6 months go by and I receive the same invoice in the mail...which I simply paid to move on. As far as the treatment - It was as frustrating as the billing turned out to be. High pressure and little time providing the paid for services. So, I left with teeth that were partially cleaned - x rays that were taken and not reviewed with me and with a wallet that was $550 lighter. My story doesn't seem to be unique. Original Review: I saw the negative reviews and decided to ignore them as I wanted a dentist in the area with a holistic focus. Major mistake. My experience is almost identical to several others. They had my insurance information, called in to verify coverage and then presented what I would be responsible for before I signed off on my treatment options. I paid what I was told I would be responsible for...and then a month later get a surprise $400 bill. I had even confirmed insurance status with them via email before my appointment, during my appointment and still what I was told wasn't accurate (and wasn't honored). Based on the number of similar reviews this looks like my experience isn't unusual. All I had done was a cleaning and x-rays. At a cost to me of about $550. The "Free New Patient Special" was certainly not free. Expect a high pressure environment where services are pushed aggressively and where billing can hurt far more than a dental visit. Avoid. I have even gotten an email through yelp of another who have had a similar situation with a surprise bill. At least my experience is helping others. read more

As far as dentistry and Dr. Victor...lifesaving! After getting the run around from 3 other dentists and an endodontist, all 3 of which said I needed a root canal, Dr. Victor saved the day. I had a crown replaced because of an initial botched work up on it 3 years ago. The dentist apparently drilled to far below my gum line, causing the nerve to be to close to the edge of the new crown, causing pain every time I would bite, even on something very soft....or so this is what they all told me. After dealing with this for almost 10 months, not being able to chew on the right side of my mouth at all, at the end of my rope and not too excited about a root canal, I did one more search for a biological/holistic dentist and found Dr. Victor. Got in rather promptly, October 2017, Dr. Victor wasn't convinced he saw what other dentists said they saw on the xray and suggested that I simply had an infection related to the botch crown re-do and prescribed me an antibiotic, which none of the other dentists even suggested. Within 24 hours, I was back to no pain and fully chewing on both sides of my mouth. Some have suggested pain will return though we are well over 2 months since seeing Dr. Victor. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Definitely worth seeing Dr. Victor for a 2nd opinion...or even 3rd, 4th, or 5th in my situation. (in full disclosure, the insurance side of things was not as fantastic. I have an out of network plan...Delta...admin informed me I would pay up front and then Delta would send me a check for the portion they pay. That I was fine with. Unfortunately, when I received the EOB, I was informed because they are out of network, Delta would pay nothing. Given my situation and Dr. Victors free consultation, I was fine with it. Just check FIRST with your insurance company, not the office, as it is ultimately our responsibility as the patient) read more

Numbers STARS should be 1.5...really bad service but they offered some level of courtesy. Total time wasted 75 minutes, learning experience moderate. I had HIGH expectation that were DASHED. I was interested in the Holistic concepts they adhere to. Yes this is a time of non-normal activity, but the issues this office imposed on my were over the top, and the receptionist/front desk staff could and should have should have addressed. I arrived 10 minutes early, was told to take the paperwork to my car to complete (I assumed for reasons of COVID19). So 30 minutes later I call to ask when I should come in, they responded soon. 15 minutes later I called again, They said i would be called soon, but could come in to the wait in the waiting room because I would be called soon 10-15 minutes later a technician approached me to take an X-ray. 10-15 minutes later a doctor escorted me to a chair, I met another technician. The Doctor apologized many times, did a short review of the X-ray with me and suggested that I return for a cleaning in 2 months. She offered a gift card as an additional apology for my time wasted, She escorted me to the front desk where they provided me with estimates of my next visit (over $500 for cleaning), and the fromt desk did not offer the gift card the doctor brought up. the front desk scheduled an upcoming visit. ( I am so disappointed, gas, time and patience wasted. I see positive reviews for this practice. But my experience is authentic. I won't go back. First impression was terrible. read more

Okay. I am not a fan of dentists. I am not a fan of leaving 5-star reviews unless it is truly deserved, either. I had a fantastic experience here. The entirety of the operation is housed in an old brownstone type building, but the interior is bright and airy and even has natural light. Because I am not a fan of dentists, it has been a few years between cleanings. However, the hygienist was of excellent humor, possessed grace and patience, and was an artist with cleaning my teeth. Dr. Victor was also a man clearly happy with his vocation, and happily guiding his whole practice towards 'greening' the dental industry. In fact, when the office heard about my line of work, the office manager offered to give me a tour of the facility and show off their initiatives at sustainability (energy efficiency, reducing pollution from waste, including nasty amalgams, et cetera). I actually, and I am not making this up, cannot wait until my six-month return for cleaning comes up! read more

When I was waiting to be checked in, there was a man in the lobby selling tickets to the staff, which started my visit a little odd, but fine. The technician I had was very friendly, but relayed to me she doesn't work there actually on their staff and works at other offices as welI, which may explain some of the issues I had. Maybe she didn't understand what that office considers routine or how they bill for things. Through out the visit, I was also asked 4 different times by different staff members how I heard about the practice-social media, friend etc. a little much, but no big deal. The main issue I had was with billing. I gave my insurance information in advance when I originally scheduled my appointment. When I was finished, I paid my bill, which was a totally reasonable amount and was explained to me to be the portion not covered by my insurance. Totally normal. I also was given a treatment plan for future treatments (not services rendered during that visit) and encouraged to pay for those treatments up front. A while after my visit, I was informed I owed a lot more money and that my insurance hadn't actually covered as much as they said they would-even though I gave the office my insurance prior to my visit and asked during my visit that they only preform services covered by my insurance. When I spoke with my insurance company, I was basically informed this office double billed for services and performed services outside of routine care even though I asked them specifically not to do so. I've finally found my dentist! From check in to finish the service I received here was first class!! Check in was smooth and I didn't have to wait long to be seen. I didn't feel rushed and all my concerns were addressed. Supporting an environmentally friendly black owned business is also a plus. Called to make an appointment for a cleaning, gave my insurance information. When I arrived for the appointment, the staff was very friendly and the office was very clean. At the end of the visit I was stuck with a bill because it was out of network. I asked why wasn't I told I wasn't covered when I called. They did not have an answer, they just apologized. I very disappointed that the were underhanded and didn't tell me I wasn't covered after I specifically asked over the phone. I will be reporting them to the better business bureau. read more

Owe the lies keep adding up. Denied access to my medical records stating my bill had to be paid first. According to the ADA, this is directly against HIPPA law. But I am sure Dr Victor knows it is pretty hard for patients to dispute charges without these records. A review of multiple sources of medical literature show that this "doctor" has not done his homework to learn what the standard of care for procedures is. Why would he, when he can simply charge the patient for denied claims for services that weren't needed? Terry clearly needs a refresher on the ADA's code of ethics. A review of the ADA's decision tree on my treatment clearly shows Terry provided an unnecessary procedure. He is either a fraud or lacking in his knowledge base. After several months of back and forth, I finally received a reimbursement for part of the cost of the appointments. According to CareFirst, my claim was submitted. My son's never was, so I had to contact The DC Dentist office and get the paperwork and submit it myself. Regarding the actual appointment, the hygienist was lovely and did a great job. Dr. Victor was extremely friendly and polite, but didn't really go over the condition of my teeth. He just said "They're fine for now, but let's keep an eye on them." When I went to another dentist, that dentist let me know that, had I waited much longer to get one repaired, I would have needed a root canal. The woman who did my son's cleaning was an angel. I forget her name, but my son was IN LOVE with her and actually asked if we could see her again the following week. However, due to the lack of communication around payment, and not being given enough information on the condition of my teeth, I would not consider returning. read more

I have had a very similar experience (All my 1 stars) with Dr. Victor. They lied to my face about calling my Insurance company and what would be covered by them. (every visit) They also broke my crown on a visit that I had to pay for. If anyone else would like to try to be part of a class action law suite please contact me.
