After five months, we had a problem with the downstairs neighbor and requested to move to a different apartment. The staff were kind enough to relocate us quickly, but at the same time they changed the start date of our lease.
When we moved out one year after our original move-in date, they charged us an early termination fee, claiming we were leaving "before the end of the lease" because of the new contract date they had created.
On top of that, they claimed they don't process move-outs on Sundays, even though this is nowhere in the lease agreement. As a result, they charged us for an extra day even though we had already vacated the apartment, and they also added charges for insurance, cleaning, trash, maintenance, and an additional $100 cleaning fee that is not mentioned anywhere in the contract.
We left the apartment spotless--exactly as we had received it just a few months earlier. Jonathan confirmed this, and together with Ángel, who both handle maintenance, they are by far the best part of The Darby. They are genuinely kind people, excellent professionals, and incredibly efficient.
In total, management added around $200 in charges that they simply made up. No matter how much we disputed them and insisted on a correction, they ignored every message we sent through the resident portal and by email. Instead, they threatened to report us to debt collectors and credit agencies if we didn't pay the full amount. We were never given the option to pay only the amount that was actually required under the lease. We were forced to pay everything they demanded, and they have never responded to our complaints or corrected the balance by removing the unjustified charges.
The two Ashleys, in particular, were extremely rude and unprofessional. They kept passing us back and forth between each other and ultimately stopped responding to our emails altogether. They have shown that all they care about is collecting as much money as possible, regardless of whether the charges are actually supported by the lease agreement.
It is also completely true what other reviews have mentioned: the building entrance doors are constantly broken and often left open for days at a time, significantly reducing security. In addition, management has decided to close the pool when the office closes at 5:00 p.m., regardless of how hot it is outside. So you're paying for a pool that you can't even use after work or during summer evenings.
It's a real shame that such a beautiful apartment community is being ruined by poor management, the incompetence of the leasing office staff, and the way they treat their residents. The property itself has great potential, but the experience is overshadowed by management's lack of professionalism, poor communication, and apparent disregard for customer service. read more
