They kept sending different people every day. My mom has dementia - she needs routine and familiar faces, not a parade of strangers confusing her even more. This made her anxious and upset constantly, but apparently Home Instead doesn't give a shit about what patients actually need. Half these caregivers had zero experience and some didn't even have the required licenses to care for my mom. Are you kidding me? I'm paying you to send qualified people, not random folks off the street who don't know what they're doing. This is my mother's safety we're talking about. I called management multiple times trying to fix this mess. Talked to some woman named Needy who gave me the most fake, corporate apologies I've ever heard. No solutions, no changes, just "sorry you feel that way" bullshit while nothing got better. This company took our money and provided garbage care that made my mom's life worse. They don't care about your loved one - they just want to cash your checks and send whoever's available that day. Don't waste your time or money with Home Instead Seattle. Find a company that actually knows how to care for people with dementia instead of this amateur hour operation.

I was referred to With A Little Help by a friend of mine who is a hospice nurse. He actually gave me the names of three agencies, and I called them all. The first two had a corporate vibe, and sent me directly into a voicemail black hole. It was days before I heard back. When I called With A Little Help, within seconds, I was talking with Kacie, one of the owners, who was so kind and spent all of the time I needed talking with me about our situation and care needs. By the end of the phone call, we had a plan for an intake evaluation, and just a couple of days later, a new care team was in place...and just like that, the stress and worry that had been accumulating over many months lifted. This is just one example of the many, many I could share about the excellent care With A Little Help offers. They aren't a corporate-care behemoth. They are local, owner run, and some of the most caring people I've met in a long time. Kacie and Paul, the owners, worked with us to find the caregivers that are the best fit for our situation. My husband had open-heart surgery in January at the University of Washington Medical Center and due to a diabetes-related wound complication, was admitted to the hospital for a second stay for initiation of wound-vac therapy. They sent us home with home-health nursing arrangements for changing the dressings. The hospital staff did not consult us about our preferences and made these arrangements for us, presenting them as the only option. Honestly, I was very concerned about what felt like a real violation of our privacy, and I did not want to have a nurse in our home. However, there really was no way to make the timing work and to secure arrangements in a wound-care clinic, so we reluctantly agreed to go along with the plan. Mary Bakker showed up at our house on Sunday and quickly changed my mind. She was professional, kind, and respectful. I did not feel uncomfortable at all about having her in our house. She was careful about doing the admission, medical plan, and medication-tracking paperwork accurately and explained things to me clearly (John was not interested in the paperwork, and she didn't force him to participate). Before beginning the treatment, Mary talked to John and I, listened carefully to our concerns, and wanted to know exactly what had and had not been working with the previous wound-vac dressings that he'd had. John had had a terrible experience with the first wound-vac dressing change in the hospital (the nurse refused to give him pain medication as ordered and it was very traumatic), and she was sympathetic and reassured John before she started. She also gave him a lot of autonomy in the process; he was able to remove the old dressing himself, which was the part that the hospital nurse had done in such a painful way. That was very helpful! She did a brilliant job changing the wound-vac dressing; it didn't leak as some of the previous ones in the hospital had, and it was also more comfortable than many of them. She shared information about the wound, what to expect as it healed, and when we would know we were done with the wound-vac unit, information we'd tried to get from hospital staff but never managed to learn from them (and we got the sense that many of them didn't know). The only feedback I'd give Heartland about how to improve is to provide their nurses with better gloves; the cheap vinyl ones that Mary had stuck to the dressing; the nitrile ones that the hospital had given me were much better. Better gloves are a tiny investment that would help the nurses perform better for their patients. Because John wanted to go back to work, we ended up getting the rest of the wound-vac dressing changes done at the UWMC wound clinic. This was in no way a reflection of the services we got from Heartland. We were both pleasantly surprised and if one of us ever needs home health care in the future, I will be a lot less concerned about it than I was this time.

Their great support and care have kept my sprits up and help give me the support to work on the painful recovery from my second not so fun total knee replacement. Our…read moreassigned caregiver, Audrey Sandbeck / Audrey Zeeb, was frequently unreliable and unprofessional, often failing to show up for scheduled shifts. When she did arrive, she spent much of her time napping or scrolling on her phone instead of providing care. She even vaped indoors while on the clock, which was completely inappropriate. Most concerningly, we discovered after the fact that she was operating with a "Closed" license status (DOH #HMCC.HM.61103597). The agency failed in its most basic duty to verify that their "certified" staff actually held valid credentials. During her time in our home, she crossed a serious boundary by soliciting our Social Security numbers and credit information to co-sign for her personal utility deposit. When we declined this inappropriate request, she made retaliatory false allegations against us. Despite having 24/7 surveillance footage that disproves her claims and documents her repeated neglect and policy violations, the Family Home Resource sided with her without reviewing our evidence. This experience raised serious alarms about their screening, oversight, and handling of complaints. We have since requested to be moved to a new agency and filed formal reports with the DOH, WA HCA, ATG, APS, Medicaid Fraud and the Division of Aging & Long-Term Care.

The new Sunday caregiver is very sweet, works her butt off, and is an artist like me! She also lives about four blocks away from me and although she doesn't drive, she still managed to get a lot of chores taken care of. Hooray! Now, the bad part. Before I had M. as my driving caregiver, I had another great caregiver. Her first name also began with M. Ha! Anyway, SHE was amazing. And then, one Monday when she was supposed to start her shift with me, she didn't show up. I had her cellphone number and called her, frantically. Nothing. No calls. No texts. The supervisor called and asked me how I was doing with M, on my new weekday shift. I was surprised and told the supervisor that M. had not shown up or called. I was worried that maybe she had been in an accident or something. SHE didn't call Family Resource ever again. She just quit. I was so upset! And then I went through caregiver after caregiver after caregiver. I told Family Resource that they had one more chance or I would jump ship to another company. Oh, they begged me not to get another company. And they sent M., the most amazing and caring person I had ever met who was a caregiver. We hit it off from the first day and I requested that if she had any shifts she needed filled, I would love to have her. And it was great, until recently. She has children and wanted to spend more time with them in the summer, which I totally get. But...except for my Sunday caregiver, the company doesn't seem to be able to get a driver who isn't a complete flake. And the flakes are flaking out AFTER the company had assured me that they can get a person who drives. After a lot of "will they, won't they?" I am tentatively scheduled to have a driver tomorrow (Thursdays) to take me to a weekly medical procedure. IF no one bothers to show up or something else happens, I am going to find another home healthcare company. I have been dealing with the proverbial "bait and switch" crap for at least a year! This is soooo bad for my physical and mental health. This company never returns calls in a prompt manner. If you talk to one person one time and another person the next time, no one there has a freaking clue what's going on. Seriously?? Family Resource, get it together or I am done with your business.
