Run by a lovely quirky couple, this winery is a must visit…read more We went here as a group of 27 for a wine tasting and though we had to wait because the previous group was running over time, we felt immediately welcome with huge pourings of their refreshing chardonnay and a cheese and fruit platter to kill for. We pounced on the strawberries, the massive juicy grapes, the sweet popcorn, the camembert cheese and deliciously salty crackers as we enjoyed our chardonnay. We were then told an outrageous story by the male owner about him being a porn star and then the inventor of the chupa chup, which is pronounced choo pa choop. Not chapa chup. Apparently the most popular flavour was cola. Their rose is delicious. The shiraz is not to my liking. But the sparkling pinot meunier is to die for. I dislike champagne including the overly expensive moet chandon but this one was easy drinking and had so so many tiny bubbles that seemed to last forever (proposal drink people?). The female owner with the huge tortoise shell glasses made sure our glasses and tummies were full as we indulged in thick crispy pretzels and consumed our sparkling. There were about 175 wines on offer, which I made a valiant effort to sample the bulk of. To be honest, the only flaw with this format is that after about two hours, you have done a decent number on your palate, rendering most things to taste largely like each other. The app was a little clunky, but the direct ordering function was ingenious. Due to being financially challenged at the time, I could not take advantage of this wonderful feature. My one suggestion would be that a wider selection of food could have been good, especially if it were Game of Thrones inspired. Bowl of brown, anyone? Next time, I'm going to go in costume. In fact, I think it should be compulsory. I will also award a prize (may or may not consist of a handshake) to any winemaker who makes a Game of Thrones inspired label/branding.
