Having been in another facility where her care fell short of her needs, I searched the local area to find a facility that I thought could provide the care she needed. That led me to Poet's Walk which has turned out to be the right choice. From the moment that my family and I toured the Poet's Walk facility, seeing the staff at work with the patients, I was left with a feeling that they knew what they were doing and the level of care that my wife needed would be available. The staff works well with each other; each residence is assigned to a specific Care Partner. They assist each other as necessary for the proper care of each resident. In watching the care partners at work, most really show care for the residence. The building was thoughtfully designed. There are two U-shaped wings for the resident's rooms with a dining room for each wing. Each wing is connected to a central area that is called the Main Street. From the Main Street area there is an outside courtyard that allows the residents to enjoy being outside on nice days, surrounded and protected by the surrounding building. My wife and I often sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy being outside among the flowers, many of which are taken care of by the residence that have that ability. The Main Street area allows the residents to gather and enjoy the many programs that are designed for their abilities and pleasure. On my daily visits to my wife, I often watch them play games of different types and see the enjoyment they get from the entertainment often provided. Although my wife is unable to participate, she does enjoy watching the activities. My wife and I eat together daily at lunch. I really enjoy feeding her and look forward to our time together. She eats breakfast and dinner with the assistance of a care partner. The food is good and might be considered excellent for this type of facility. It has improved considerably over the past few months. Organization in the dining room has gotten better but patients is required by all as the staff must assist the residence to get to the dining rooms and then sort out the correct type of food for each resident. This all takes time sometimes causing a wait to eat. Poet's Walk is well managed. I see and talk to the different section directors, almost on a daily basis. They are always open to suggestions and strive to find a better way to do things, evidenced by the changes that have take place, always to the better. Is Poet's Walk perfect? My dad died on Tuesday and I can't think of a more loving environment for him to have died in. Less than 12 hours after he died, a big bouquet of flowers from Tribute were delivered to my mom's house offering condolences. He experienced "transfer trauma" which is common and could become angry and aggressive, which is also common for Alzheimer's patients. Their response was to add medications and keep adding them until he was in a chemical straight jacket. This included the use of benzodiazepines. I was terribly concerned, especially when the prescribing nurse practitioner proved uncooperative in meeting with us. I set up a virtual meeting with his neurologist during which he was unable to open his eyes he was so drugged. She took him off drugs or lowered the dosage and he came back to life. So did his unruly behavior so they kicked us out. Staff is under trained but doing their level best. The leadership is not looking to care but to manage their patients.

Not the care we signed up for. This was my first experience with assisted living and didn't think…read moreof all of the "what ifs" to ask. When considering to move my loved one into Commonwealth Senior Living (CSL) in Front Royal, the office manager (?) promised a credit to their fee schedule, and made generalized markings on the fee schedule document. This promised credit was not added to the contract, and we naively thought they would honor their promise. My loved one required a higher level of care, which CSL quickly offered, and naturally came at a higher cost ($35/day). I didn't think about, "what if they're hospitalized?" Not too long after my loved one moved in, they were hospitalized. We were understandably billed for the room, but also for the higher level of care (about ten days, on two different occasions). When we contacted the office manager, she said to pay the higher level of care cost (the additional $35+ daily cost) to avoid any late fees and a credit would be issued the next month. This happened the following month also. [I should add that CSL was unable to provide the level of care my loved one needed but did not let the family know this.] No discounted fee credits (promised) were ever issued, nor were the credits issued for the daily level of care while they were hospitalized. Multiple phone calls, even trips to the office resulted in no response or credit given. My loved one passed and didn't give the required 30-day notice. Another important "what if" question that should have been asked. Two years of trying to get resolution, no response from the Front Royal office. I finally elevated the issue to the corporate level, which prompted a response from the Front Royal office, not to answer my questions and concerns but to give me an option of having a zero balance (since my loved one passed prior to giving the 30-day notice), and to a two-day deadline to decide. CSL's contract has obviously developed from a well learned business view, however, it is not a win/win contract for people looking for a place for their loved one to be looked after and cared for.

Housekeeping doesn't clean under or behind furniture, and even dirt, dropped food sitting in the middle of the room aren't cleaned properly. The level of care they show in the rooms reflects the level of care residents--especially those who can't speak up for themselves--are receiving. Some residents have visible dandruff and grease because their hair isn't being washed regularly, dried crust around their eyes from not having their faces cleaned properly, ears full of wax, and noticeable odors on their hands. These are all signs that their hygiene needs are not being met.

Service time after bell is rang for help to bathroom and wheelchair transfer help. There are some…read morereally good nurses and aides, and then there are some horrible aides who should find another profession, not in healthcare. My Mom pays a lot of money each month as a lump sum, a service level fee, and an initial fee to get set up at Spring Arbor. However, the level of service given to my Mom by several of the CNAs/aides is absolutely unacceptable. They DON'T wash the resident owned Purewick systems everyday and leave the open end of the catheter tubing on the dirty floor. I brought this to the head executives, and they tried to get the staff to follow simple cleaning rules, but there are several sides that just don't use common sense and don't follow the executives' instructions. Therefore, my Mom is now in the hospital with a bad urinary tract infection (UTI) and raw red wounds around her pull up creases. I'm done and it's only been two months. I do NOT recommend this facility to anyone who is wheel chair bound and doesn't have a local advocate who regularly visits to keep an eye on your loved one's health.
