Visited this picturesque little pub with some old friends for a meal last weekend. The pub has a great position overlooking a village green setting in a quiet turn off from the main A4 road between Maidenhead and Reading. Apparently the area was used frequently as a backdrop to the Midsummer Murders TV series and on a lovely evening it was clear to see why it was chosen. It wasn't very busy but that is probably more a sign of the times rather than any other factor as they have a good selection of beers, some drinkable wines and the prices weren't bad. The interior of the place could do with a revamp but it wasn't unacceptable and whilst there is only a tiny car park there was plenty of space outside on the road and traffic was negligible all evening. The menu was perfect for what we wanted, nothing fancy and something for even our vegetarian member. At first we thought perhaps the prices looked a little high and when the food came wasn't sure it was going to be worth it BUT all four of our plates were collected without a morsel left on them. I can vouch for the home made steak and ale pie which came (in it's own little single portion dish) accompanied by new potatoes and garden peas. Absolutely lovely and for once I struck lucky as although the others looked OK, after I had tried it I didn't want anyone else's!! Having said that I would like to go back soon because I would like to try the fish and chips as that also looked really nice and apparently hit the spot for friend who had that! So just goes to prove that you don't feel dissatisfied with prices if you enjoy what you get. On the down side service levels were low and you do need to keep on your toes to get a drink as they are understaffed but again probably a sign of the times! Not easy to afford staff on low turnovers and I did admire the way "mine host" dashed around all evening keeping up with everything and for that alone I would go back and support his efforts. Places like this need support to keep them viable and as a venue for a quiet drink and a tasty supper in pleasant surroundings well worth a visit but just be prepared to be patient. read more
