The most welcoming and comfy, the best for my budget, and the one surrounded by the most scenic beauty. I may have stayed only one night but I loved the breakfast I was treated to the next morning and the night before the staff helped me pick out a scotch that I really liked and wanna find now that I'm back in the states. Only negative would maybe be that Uber drivers are willing to dropoff, but not pickup, from this spot (too rural? - idk, really only seemed like a 15-20 min ride from the heart of Edinburgh) But there is a train station only about a 10 min walk from the really quaint cottage atmosphere you're going to get if you stay here. Again, cannot recommend The Sun Inn enough - would absolutely love to stay here if I find myself across the pond again!

The menu is based around traditional Scottish ideas - steak and ale pie, haggis-neeps-and-tatties, and the like, but these dishes are well executed and nicely presented. Of late, menus have become a bit more adventurous, and the quality of materials and cooking continues to rise. Given that this pub is part of a chain, I can't see it ever aiming for a Michelin star or even "fine dining" status, but it is way above the typically dire standard of pub food in Scotland and on the very short list of places we are willing to go to for a meal out in south Edinburgh. We settled on this castle due to it being quite livable, beautiful, great reviews and close to Edinburgh. We booked the Queen four poster bed option for our rooms, including dinner in the dungeon, breakfast and cream tea. Check in was efficient and I appreciated the requested assistance with baggage as there are no elevators. The rooms were spacious and lovely with pretty views. The bed was comfortable. I didn't realize until too late that the heat hadn't been turned on, and then the room phone did not work. Thankfully I texted my cousin who called the front desk. It took a while for the heat to kick in and someone found an extra twin duvet that I could top up my bed with. In the morning we explored the grounds and then met a very passionate employee in the library. Some of their books are very old and anyone is welcome to read them in the library. The spa was quite nice. Apparently the massage therapist is quite good. There is also a relaxing water circuit included. I wished that we were staying longer, but we were headed back to central Edinburgh.

My husband had sea bass that was good but steaks were not cooked right and my seafood pasta had absolutely no favoring at all. The lamb and sirloin entrees were good as well and had unique garnishes and sauces that complemented both. But the service was a bit slow, so be prepared for a leisurely dinner. I did not have any problems with the lack of outlets or TV as others mentioned, we spent most of our time enjoying the castle outside of our room. There was a lack of elevator to the second floor, which understandably could be an accessibility barrier. There is a restaurant in the hotel but there are a LOT of restaurants within walking distance. We had asked for a room with two beds thinking they would be single beds. (Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.
