The Confluence is a new section of the Waterloo Greenway and its grand opening occurred today, June 6, 2026 in downtown Austin near Lady Bird Lake. It is a 13-acre urban park and trail system along Waller Creek running from 4th street down to Lady Bird Lake. The Confluence represents years of planning, environmental restoration, and civic involvement. This expansion transforms what was once an overlooked, flood-prone corridor into a vibrant urban environment. As a fyi confluence is defined as "the point where two or more rivers, streams, or other bodies of flowing water meet and merge into a single channel."
The grand opening began with Dr. Collette Pierce Burnett, current Waterloo Greenway CEO, sharing her thoughts about The Confluence followed by remarks from Senator Lloyd Doggett and Representative Casar. Other officials and leaders also shared remarks.
Walking through the park, I felt a since of deep pride as an Austinite. Towering native trees, meandering trails, pedestrian bridges, elevated boardwalks, and lush gardens create a space that feels both vibrant and serene. With 13 new acres of green space, 1,600 trees, and more than 200,000 plants, The Confluence brings nature into Austin's downtown center.
While a few areas are still being refined, today's unveiling was magnificent. It is nice to see Austin greener and more connected. Admission was free and open to the public. In addition, affordable event parking was available for $5 at the Austin Convention Center 5th St. Garage. Also, 150 free bus passes were provided. Some of today's celebratory activities included live music from the Del Valley band, treasure hunt, and gifts (fan, shopping bag, Waterloo water, etc.)
