Their prices are very reasonable, so maybe this is why - nowhere else in the West End have I found a cheaper deal than their 4 items drycleaned for a tenner - which includes leather and suade items, and either one dress or jacket per batch. Silk is included too - which is great when you can pay huge amounts at other drycleaners to keep your delicate items in shape (oo-er). The staff were pretty intense- to the point that I wondered if the chap who spoke to me was high on more than just life, but he was friendly and accomodating none-the-less, and very forceful in sharing the box of sweets on the counter. I had my 8 items worth of clothes back in three days, and they were perfectly clean and unstained. Although do smell a liiiittle bit like a new car... hence the 4 stars rather than 5.

I'm so glad that I did because they were helpful, kind, and knowledgeable- to top it off, I had the opportunity to have a lovely chat with the people at the desk (as well as interacting with a dog called Olive). What every seasoned traveler finds by moving around is that unexpected things happen and it's not so much what happens to us as it is what we do with the collection of experiences. This is one of those times. It could've easily been an unfortunate day and by all means, it's normal to feel human emotions. But what I can say is that things have a way of turning the way they are meant to, as evidenced by having authentic connection with everyone here. If I force myself to look past the widescreen boredom that is this shop then I can appreciate that it is actually filled with very useful services. If you need a special mail box because you don't trust the one at your house then this is a good shop to go to. If like me you need to get lots of things photocopied and have very little money I give this a big Yelp stamp of approval. It also offers quite cheap Internet access so if you are in the area and freak out about needing to update your Twitter or check how much spam your email account has then pop in.

Being a minuscule five foot two and a half inches (that extra half inch is very important) I pretty much need to get all my trousers taken up unless I got them from the "petite" otherwise known as "short arse" section of clothing stores. Since using Skint, I have become something of an tailor addict, getting dresses nipped at the back and tucked at the waist all over the place. It is amazing the difference a slight alteration can make. Bonus points for little bowl of sweets on the counter.

Hidden away on Union Street, it isn't the easiest of places to find, but it has a fantastic reputation, and the work they've done for me has always been to a great standard and a reasonable price. In terms of time they are pretty quick, and I think you can pay a little extra if you want it same day (not sure on this though!). I usually get trousers and jeans taken up, but I have had some significant alterations done to some expensive suits and they have done really good work on them. Again, I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think they might be cash only - the cost is usually under £10, so it isn't a huge deal. There are always sweeties at the till, which is a huge bonus!

So, I figured I'd go to Timpson just down the road - job done... Not so. Not only did it cost almost half the cost of my boots to get this soleing business sorted (and they were expensive boots!) but they said it would cost a bomb to get my zip replaced - and that they'd have to be sent away for three weeks! No thankyou. So I kept them, and thought I could fix the zip elsewhere for cheaper. I wore them a couple of times after, to try and heal the wound of the loss of my money, and on the third wear, the stitching of the new sole came away completely from the boot and left a massive hole on the side of my shoe! What kind of craftmanship is that? As for getting keys cut there - walk 5 mins up Great Western Road, or down Dumbarton Road and you can get it done at a little independent place for a fraction of the cost. Seriously, don't bother. They take advantage of their prime location to hike up their prices.

This is one of those little shops that takes you right back to your childhood. Peter, the proprietor, is a very cheery soul who has run it for over 30 years, and likes nothing better than a good blether. He's from the Western Isles so perhaps that explains it. There's very little shoe-related problems that he can't fix, and if it's only a small thing he's as likely not to charge you anything. The standard of work is pretty good, and if anything goes wrong they will happily put it right for you. They also cut keys of course, house keys, car keys (even those new-fangled RF ones) - you name it, he'll probably have a key for it. A new and very useful service that they have, is to replace cracked phone screens, although I imagine they might have to send those away to be done? Still, it's nice to see that being offered. Small operations like this place are getting harder to find in this day and age, so I applaud him for keeping it going. Long may it continue.

It's bright blue shop front makes it easy to spot and really makes an impact on this main road. The shop sign itself states very clearly what this business provides - though, does not so clearly make the business name known. For this reason, I've ingeniously named/nicknamed it Watch Repairs Etc. This is due to watch repairs being the first service listed on the sign, hence (possibly) their primary service and/or area of business. However, they also dabble in key cutting, shoe repairs and engraving. So this is an excellent all rounder of a shop. They are also, to my knowledge, not listed in any other websites or directory papers etc. Thus, they remain something of a little known secret. This is perhaps why they are usually fairly quiet (hence service is quick, efficient and to a high standard), reasonably priced and take the extra time to provide quality customer service. All of which are pleasant surprises and something of a dying bred in the retail world.
