I really enjoyed my 2 night stay, here in Stony Stratford, near Milton Keynes. The inn is old with plenty of character but with nice updates like decent wifi. Room was quiet even though in the courtyard. The real 5-star is for the staff, they were all very attentive, polite and friendly. Would definitely stay again when traveling through. read more

The Cock Hotel is situated on the High Street in Stony Stratford, situated near the former Watling Street Roman Road and an historic coaching route. A little further down the street is The Bull, and travellers staying at the two hotels vied with each other to the telling outrageous 'tales of the road', which supposedly led to the famous phrase 'Cock and Bull story' derives. Today The Cock Hotel is a decent place for bar meals, weddings and overnight stays. There is a nice enclosed paved area away from the main street, and private car parking at the rear accessible from Vicarage Road at the rear. The bar meals are generally good value, but I've found some of their mass catering for groups to be rather disappointing. read more

Terrible. Utterly terrible. 'The food was burnt, flat and looked entirely bland.' I came home for the weekend to see my Mum and we decided to go for Sunday lunch there. My Mum was sceptical about going as she had already suffered an atrocious Christmas work meal for the Christmas just passed, however we gave it the benefit of the doubt and decided to go as it looked quite nice. Just to be safe, we called up before going to check that they did do Sunday lunch, which they told us they did. However when we arrived and had sat down with a bottle of wine and when the waitress came to take our order we were told that they had no meat for our roast meals and that, although they did have a vegetarian option, their only gravy was meat based. I pointed out that, although I'm not vegetarian, meat based gravy somewhat defeats the purpose of a vegetarian meal. At any rate, we tried again and made another order off the menu hoping against hope that they would have any food available. When our food came, it was awful. A plate of gravy with black burnt potatoes and some miserable and lonely looking vegetables all floating above them. There wasn't anything green on the plate. My mother took one look before deciding that it was time to go before trying it. The food was burnt, flat and looked entirely bland. Im confident that a Syrian rebel's rations would make a more satisfying option. We asked to speak to the manager to explain why we were leaving and after 10 minutes of waiting, we decided to cut our losses and leave unanswered. Utterly atrocious. We won't be going there again soon, not that it cost us anything. read more

This is actually the bar in a sizeable hotel of the same name. There is a separate eating area but we chose to eat in the small bar area. It's quite nicely decorated in a rustic style. Beers are the usual range. The food menu us quite extensive. I chose "Whitby" scampi, chips and peas. The chips were crispy and fine, as was the scampi, but it all seemed a little average, though certainly edible. read more

This is about the pub rather than the hotel part as I've never stayed there. The pub staff are really friendly and go out of their way to help you. There are two sections to the indoor part, to the left and right of the main entrance as you walk in. On the left are traditional pub tables and chairs/benches in a wooden floored area. To the right are more comfortable benches and chairs in a carpeted area. The patio out the back is very pleasant. A particular bonus is as well as a pub it also serves a very nice coffee during the day from quite early on in the morning. It's especially good if you're a mum wanting to get out and meet other new mums somewhere comfortable but big enough to cope with several babies in buggies! read more

This pub (never stayed in the hotel) is great - perfect for a beer in the garden - great sun trap and relaxed atmosphere. It's also got a range of sizes of table which is great because it means that bigger groups can go and hang out together too. Parking as everywhere in Stony is a bit of a nightmare so you're best getting a taxi. read more

The Cock is right next door to the Bull.... get it... a Cock and Bull Story? Yes, this is the place, well one of them. In the days when this was a coach house on the royal road between London and Wales, this place was famous because any gossip head in one was instantly known in the other, this a 'Cock and Bull Story'. Like an ancient game of telephone. When I was in the place, it was full of locals from Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard and was alive, vibrant and on the loose. Good thing they have accommodations, like every good stagecoach hang, because after a night here, you might need a room. What a great place! read more

Such a shame could be great but there is always something.. Living locally have been several times either the food is ok and the service bad or great service and terrible food. Last visit on Tuesday night it seemed they did not have enough staff, with a a half full bar and restaurant told could not take anymore food orders as could not cope..our group and several others left to go to other establishments to get food.
