And there's a bus that takes you straight there. So off I went... Only upon arrival did I see the Wal-Mart sign next to it. Well, at least the prices will be cheap, right? I was starving so went to the cafe, where the lines were long, food was nearly out, and the tables a mess. To their credit, the poor workers were doing their best to keep the lines moving and tables tidied up, but just too many people making a big mess as they went along. The interior of the store was pretty cold, and the "free from" selections not much greater than Morrison's (although the freezer section had GF fish for fish and chips, meatballs, pizza, burritos, and the Amy's line of organic foods). I poked around the rest of the store and found the clothes line to be rather dated (Wal-Mart and Target in the US are vastly better) and lots of cheap home goods that's probably OK if you can't make it out to IKEA. Not worth a second visit; maybe it's time to see what Tesco and/or Sainsbury's has to offer.

There's nothing terrible about this Asda, but it has enough faults to make you want to shop elsewhere. Why Asda and not elsewhere? Like its other chains, Asda is a bit more expensive, and the quality isn't as good for most of its fresh produce. If I really must shop at a supermarket, I might as well justify it by its super cheapness or utter convenience. The better part of my soul might resent my local Tesco, but at least I have a good economic reason for going there. They might not oppose unions like Walmart, but I would still rather shop elsewhere.

In fairness Portobello Road's Willy M recently went under an overhaul, introducing a revitalised rotisserie, butcher, delicatessen, etc., while extending the back area to accommodate new chillers and a lovely fresh bakers. Most notably the fresh produce area has been redesigned and laid out well, introducing a particularly good herb garden. The selection is probably the best I've seen. Offers are regular and fair. I particularly love timing it right to get all the discounted butchers, bakers and candlestick mak-- I mean rotisserie fare at the end of the day. Good for a monthly shop. Loses one star for not stocking Calippos anymore.

Then again, my obsession with fresh beets is maybe just as strange. The staff span the gamut from surly to very friendly, so better than a lot of the big groceries, as you have to expect a certain range with so many people working there. Since I first put up my review Morrisons have moved with the times and now have a much expanded free-from section, including more frozen options, etc. Their Quorn selection is still limited (no steak strips!) and frequently sold out, but it's overall a much better place for vegetarian products now. Well done! I do still find that their layout can be confusing after almost two years here.

Lo and behold there sits an actual McDonald's Restaurant behind the cash desks. I couldn't believe it!!! I have never came across a McDonald's in a supermarket before and an Asda at that. It was absolutely mobbed, due to the event at the Corn Exchange, so we weren't able to stop in. Well, it's good to know it's there if we are ever out that way again. It was a good sized Asda and we found everything that we needed OK and paid at the self checkout. A store with a good sized car park, everything you need and a bonus McDonald's Restaurant for when you have the munchies or get hangry. Hehe!

LARGE, SPACIOUS, 24h OPENING TIME, WELL STOCKED…read more..... I have not been to Asda a lot of times, as normally it is too big for me and crowded. However, recently I made the discovery of 24h shopping and it is so convenient to go there after 10 clock at night and shop what you need without being disturbed. This Asda is massive and you can get food, clothing, appliances, pharmacy, coffee shop, electronics, toilets....and not to mention all the offers! Asda is well known for offering the best price amongst all the supermarkets! Ample space of parking is available. If you do not have a car the 35 bus will take you close to the location.

We were pleased with the selections of everything from cheeses to ales and every snack in between. Upon checkout we were curious about the irn-bru in the bin next to the counter so we asked the lady who was checking folks out. She was sweet and explained that it was just something we had to try but it was too hard to explain. Enough said - we brought one home to try! They had lots of clearanced out items near the checkout as well so we grabbed a bag of crisps to go with our new local finds. Great shop - and good customer service!

I'm in two minds about this place…read more Scotmids in general have decent stock, including plenty of GF and lactose free items and they give discount vouchers every now and then which often give £2 off if you spend over £10 (not too shabby!). There's a decent range of cheeses, often including some which are locally made. I also like their own brand stuff, which is decent quality. This particular Scotmid has recently had a revamp and now includes an area with fresh baked bread, a vegetable rack with your 'not your usuals' next to all the 'normal' vegetables, a pastry/pie counter next to the tills and a self-service check out area. All these things make me think that Scotmid wants to be more 'Waitrose' than 'Tesco Express'. However, they are pricier than Tesco, likely because most of what they sell is sourced locally. It sometimes surprises me how quickly the price goes from a few quid to the average £13-17 I spend here. I can live with the price, I don't have to shop here after all, but one thing that kind of makes me lose patience is the staff. On the tills that staff are wonderful, they ask you about your day and are always lovely, fostering a sense of community in the local shop. In the aisles however the staff have a habit of having personal conversations (not 'guess what I found my husband doing last night?' but more 'I was watching Breaking Bad and I couldn't believe the bit where the thing happened!') and you occasionally feel you are intruding if you need to reach between them to grab your milk. This is probably a consequence of the friendly atmosphere and general friendliness about the place but it has tried my patience more than once! Overall though I like this Scotmid and I'm glad it's my local!

This is my local Salisbury's and where every Monday I do my weekly shop…read more It is a large store, but what bothers me as half the store is not food. This in my eyes defeats the purpose of a supermarket as surely they are food first and TVs second? Clearly it works for them but it does get annoying as choices are limited. The freezer section is very small which for a poor student means I have limited choices in frozen chips. I also find there is a lack of alternatives to brand names i.e. supermarket own brand. On some occasions I would much prefer to just buy the supermarket brand but because this shop has a limited selection of food I can't do this all the time. I do enjoy the "Oops!'' section though. As a first year and an Asda shopper, the Oops section was like finding gold. For those who aren't in the know, this is the reduced section. They always have reduced meat which is handy for throwing in the freezer. The staff here are very friendly and chatty which is a novelty for supermarket staff.

There is a fair range of deals to be had but it does work out more expensive, than say going to Asda. Even given the choice and its proximity to chez moi, I only concede to shopping here once in a while now because I hate the queues. To avoid a rant, its always busy, there's never enough staff on till's, regardless of when I shop. The staff are all really nice, but when I've stood in yet another queue for what feels like half my life and I'm starving, I just want to get served and go. Hence I shop here less than I used to and prefer the little Scotmid who manage queues perfectly.

During term time I live within a thirty second walk of this place and so use it at least four times a week for the essentials. Their main selling point has to be their freshly baked bread which, although not cheap, is certainly delicious. My favourite has to be their French loaf which makes for a great lunch-time baguette. They also sell a huge selection of curry sauces, frozen meals, fresh chicken, beef and cold meat and a range of quality fruit and vegetables. There's a cash machine in the corner as well, so there's not much more you could want (except lower prices).

Unless you have a car, then the big Tesco in New Town or the big Asda over by the Corn Exchange are a pain to get to, which means that this is where you'll head when you need a big shop. As well as all the usual food and grocery-related stuff this branch also offers a pharmacy, a household section, clothing, a bakery, a cheese counter as well as a butcher/fishmonger counter. It just so happens to be housed within the world's ugliest shopping centre, Cameron Toll. But don't let that put you off; with free parking and good bus links this is a pretty handy one as far as supermarkets go. Just avoid it at the beginning of all the uni terms, as it's packed to the rafters with students accompanied by their doting mums buying them enough food to last them until the next holidays and then some.

It is in a great location for students as well as it is near the Kings Buildings and therefore many people get flats in the area. Sainsbury's therefore get a good amount of younger customers. The store really does allow you to save a lot of money because if you go to the smaller branches of supermarkets such as Tesco Metro or Sainsbury's local, they tend to concentrate on stocking branded items rather than the cheaper Sainsbury's brands. I mean I really can't tell that much difference between Sainsnury's own baked beans than Heinz beans, and this shop would allow you to get these cheaper options. The shop also has a great range of clothes items and home items and would sure to be of great use at picking up some bargains for the house.
