I stumbled into my first City Waves 5 Rhythms class with Alessandro and Vehllia just over 6 months ago after spotting their flyer at my Physical Therapist's office. I have been working through debilitating health issues for over ten years and had finally begun to chip away at what felt like a toxic iceberg. My doctor and PT had both let me know how important movement was in my healing, yet moving was the thing that brought me the most pain. I tried unsuccessfully to treat myself in a passive way with medicines, supplements, and massages but found that I was still suffering everyday and my will to live was draining. I knew I needed a change. This particular class of 5 Rhythms City Waves was on a Friday morning for 1.5 hours in the Mission. I thought maybe this daytime dance was the beacon of light I had been waiting for. I had carried such nostalgia for my former days as a raver, dancing into the wee hours of the morning with a dear set of friends. That lifestyle became more and more impossible as my youth gave way to long working hours and eventually raising children. After walking away from the clubs and raves in my late 20's, I had tried other dance classes and was always unsuccessful. I quickly discovered that my unique style of learning did not flow easily with set choreography and that wasn't the dance experience my body and soul were craving. I was vaguely familiar with 5R as I had attended a "Sweat you Prayers" about 15 years prior and while I didn't love back then as a committed raver, it was free form dance with somewhat decent music. At this point, I literally had nothing left to lose as the doc's realistic suggestion was to start with a 5 minute walk around the block, and I pretty much refused to do it. I was practically immobile from chronic joint inflammation and instability due to hyper-mobility. Walking hurt. Sitting hurt. Even laying down hurt. I was one sad mess of a human who had just been given a life long diagnosis of mold sensitivity. The unfortunate truth for people like me is that mold is everywhere all the time...While recovery is possible, it is a long, painful, soul crushing road of avoiding, detoxing, and rebuilding. I was at one of the lowest points of my life when I walked into my first 5 Rhythms class. My body was falling apart, my life and relationships were in shambles, and the only thing I wanted to do was sleep. I say this in all seriousness, that class changed my life. I danced, free of pain for the entire time. This was nothing short of a miracle. I loved the music, the instructors, the community, and most importantly, I felt embodied joy for the first time in over a decade. This was the first dance of the rest of my life. Today, I dance at least 7 hours a week. My body is free of pain. I learned that movement stimulates the lymphatic system and regulates our central nervous system, among other things, and that was what my body needed to move through my condition. My days are filled with joy again. I feel connected to who I really am. It was as if my soul had been pushed out of my body due to living a typical American life and all my bodies messages had been ignored, leading me onto a path of chronic illness. With 5R as my new go to, something truly wonderful emerged over the coming weeks and my life transformed into a weekly regime of healthy eating, PT visits, and dancing up to 4 times a week. Over the next several months, I healed so many parts of my bodies instability with my amazing PT, Bettina of Rising Sun Physical Therapy, and discovered that dance is far more than just fun. It is a deep healing modality that stems from our inner joy of being embodied. I have spent many dance sessions releasing years of emotions trapped deep inside my muscles and yet, I finish each "class" invigorated and connected to myself in a way I will never let go of again. Being embodied is now my cherished birth right. I rejoice that I have made it this far and I am even grateful that I fell so sick as it lead me to where I am and who I am today. My body has become my temple and my playground. This healing journey has been rich with profound learning and connecting to myself in ways I never would have if I hadn't gotten sick. My illness brought me home to myself and my deepest love, dance. 5 Rhythms with Alessandro and Vehllia have made this possible. They hold a container for us do go as deep as we choose. Tears are met with loving and gentle support, while happy vigorous dancing is welcomed as well. It is recognized that we are all in our own places, doing our own work, and sometimes it's just about showing up and being right where you are. I have enjoyed dancing to all kinds of music and have learned that it isn't about the music at all, it's about being embodied and moving through the mental distractions our mind throws at us. Dancing has become my daily moving meditation. While I still have a long road ahead of me, with dance and City Waves 5R, I know I've got this. read more
