Having used Allerton is the past, I decided to get a quote from them for my new home, alongside 5…read moreof the highest rated companies in the Northwest. In total, I secured x6 quotes. I was shocked at Allerton's price, which was completely ridiculous. They were at least £5,000 more than four of the companies, who all priced roughly the same, even out-pricing Everest, which shocked me. They come out at almost £8,000 more than the others for replacing all the windows and doors. Based on these prices, I decided not to go ahead with them, as I don't think they can justify their prices, regardless how good they claim to be. They use Rehau windows, which a lot of companies use, so the only thing they can use for price justification, is their quality of installation.

They sell a much better range of gifts and wrapping paper/bags etc than the other store as well as a fancier range of cards. I must admit, as the price goes up the standard of service goes down. The staff in here have, on occasion, been quite brusque and rather unhelpful. I have asked if something is stocked and I have recieved a flat no, no apology or suggested alternative, no half-hearted look, just "no". end of. so off we go to the cheap shop then...

Things you had absolutely no idea you needed until you realised that you didn't have them, or at least until you realised they actually existed. That the place manages to keep going while so many ventures in the high-rent Formby business lots go belly up is testament to how much people actually like junk like this. It's all pretty cheap and cheery in here but don't be surprised if some of the stuff begins to wither and rot, particularly if left out in the British summertime for any length - even the stuff that is technically supposed to be used outside. They do stock some decent blank black-and-white photo cards which always come in handy. Really though, who is still buying beaded curtains?

I recently visited Germany and went in a shop there that reminded me of here. It sold everything from Walkmans (yes, the original ones) to garden ornaments and it is this type of bizarre bric-a-brac that Gifts in House (it'll always just be a Poundland to me) specialises in, although not so much in the electrical equipment department. Many a bargain can be found here (it's very cheap) but when you leave with a bagful of goodies you'll be asking yourself if you actually need any of it or you just bought it because it was there and it was shiny. A good place to go if you're looking for some kind of bizarre joke birthday present as well I'd imagine.

The downstairs of this fabulous establishment is full of the most adorable trinkets, gifts, jewellery, stationery, homewares and toiletries - almost too much to take in and very dangerous if one is feeling in a spending mood. I actually ended up buying *myself* a gift instead of the person I was buying the card for! Upstairs there is an interesting collection of vintage furniture and bric-a-brac but it is the cornucopia of delectable gifts and bibelots downstairs that has captured my heart. The gorgeous broaches, scarves and handbags, knitted baby clothing, mugs, keyrings, dinner mats and coasters (I bought myself a rather fabulous 'Liverpool's Most Iconic Sights' coaster set - photo below!), fridge magnets and ornaments. I was extremely tempted by the 'retro bunny with a baby's face' lamp but managed to restrain myself. The best thing about Larks is that you don't actually NEED stuff from there...you just WANT it. Because having a cubic zirconia broach shaped like the Eiffel Tower makes you feel happy doesn't it? And that's near enough to needing for me.

The staff is very gregarious and helpful. They will do their best to help you if you have any request. The hotel is 5 minutes' drive from Liverpool City Centre but it is far enough so you don't have to suffer from noise; the area is effectively very quiet. My room had a bathroom with a great shower and was spotless clean. Teas and coffee, biscuits and even mineral were provided. A hair dryer was also present if you needed it. TV with a freeview box was also present. My favourite thing about my room was the nice decoration and the bed. The bed was very comfortable and the lining was so comfortable as it was 100% cotton. Wi-fi was available for free in the lounge which encompasses comfy leather sofas and a widescreen TV. The breakfast is lovely too and you are spoilt for choice: continental, full English or a bit of both world. Whether you are here on business or on a mini-break to discover Liverpool city, I can only but recommend to stay here. I only paid £49.95, which was cheaper and far nicer than staying at a Travelodge.

The fact that it is located upon Prescott Street opposite the Royal Liverpool Hospital means that it is the ideal location to grab a pick me up for a person in need. If theres one thing that flowers do well it is to cheer up those who are down and having purchased a varied arrangement for my girlfriend from Lula recently I felt uplifted by the whole consumer experience. On my trip to Lula I purchased a varied and colourful arrangement of lilys and carnations with various other types of flowers thrown in there. This was all done on the reccomendation of the extremely helpful staff who simply asked who the flowers were for and the kind of arrangement I would like and took it from there. This kind of service is sadly missing from many modern day businesses and it was an extremely satisfying feeling to have experienced such excellent customer service and attention to detail. The arrangement cost around £7.00 which was a reasonable amount for an above par level of service. Lula is a much fresher and personal alternative to purchasing flowers which are sold at the Spa store a few doors up. If you are a Liverpool local with a need to cheer up a special someone visit Lula and I promise you will not feel dissapointed. On the whole excellent, business, excellent service and an all round feel good experience.

Maybe tat is the wrong word. All the books here are of a very high quality. The covers are pristine, the photography is excellent and the general feel of each book is akin to lifting the Holy Grail. It's just a shame the actual content is terrible. It's a basic fact that 904% of all books published today have their origins in television. They're all either companion guides to the latest reality cack, cookery books from smarmy TV chefs or turgid autobiographies from washed-up soapstars. The stationery is still great though. I could buy it all day before realising nothing I do in life necessitates the purchasing of stationery, sadly.

But what Smith's are really good at is stocking magazines on every subject available to humanity. 'Treasures of the Earth'. 'Surf UK', 'Gun Collector', 'True Crime', 'the Beano', 'TV Weekly'. These are just some of the titles that litter the shelves in most Smith's outlets. They also sell a range of confectionary, sometimes including 'Toblerone', which one would normally associate with airports or shit holidays! I'm surpised this shop is still going after Woolworths went down the Swanny! However, fair play to them as they seemed to have affiliated with the Post Office now, meaning you can get your 'True Crime' mag, your Toblerone and your travel insurance all under one roof!
