While my girlfriend and I were checking out Calgary, we were wanting to check out some chocolates and stumbled upon The Chocolate Lab while walking around. The interior is nice and bright, with a wide selection of chocolates for you to look at. The lady working there was very helpful, giving us good suggestions to help us pick what we wanted. We decided to get the 9 piece box to share so that we could try out various flavors. The quality of the chocolate here is great, and I can see why they have various awards for their bonbons. The chocolates all had colorful aesthetic designs to them, and the ones with fruit in them were extremely flavorful. Ones like the Dreamsicle were memorable, and they also have ones with liquor inside them for people who are interested in that. Beautiful shop in downtown Calgary with fun packaging. The chocolate covered items (dragees) use a vegan glaze which is a big plus and rare to see. Enjoyed the dark chocolate covered almonds which didn't use too much sugar (a good thing). Also saw some interesting options like chocolate covered orange peels, cherries, malt balls. Will have to try next time! Came here looking for the famed Coppeneur chocolate shop (but now it's online only)....but happy to find Chocolate Lab so it the visit during the cold wasn't a total loss. read more

A really delicious chocolate shop! They have a large assortment of chocolates to pick from and they also have a large selection of prepackaged chocolates as well. We got a box of 4 chocolates and they were all really good, so it really just depends on what you're in the mood for. We did get a bag of caramels which were really good. The best part about it is the bag was resealable and we could save the treats for later! Service was very attentive and the shop itself is really cute. read more

Chocolate = Work of Arts? Here at The Chocolate Lab, that's how Chocolate is prepared and displayed as such. Every piece looks so pretty and so colourful. I just feel like order every single one of those. But sadly, good chocolate does come with a cost and I do have a budget. Staff here is super friendly and cheerful. The chocolates here are BEAUTIFUL little works of art and quite tasty. I didn't realize the Chocolate Lab existed until #loveYYC day popped up and I set out to explore the city. Located in Chinatown, they were promoting their Chinese 5 spice truffles. Not something I would have picked from their beautiful line without the nudge but I quite liked it We ended up buying a some of the chocolates and truffles to come home with us. This was a great find but a strange location because beautiful boxes of chocolates are not what I personally go to china town to find. But, now that I know they are there, I will check them out again. read more

Cool shop in a really fun location, right on the north edge of Chinatown. You could drive by it a million times.... but don't. Stop and go in. Its got a real buzz, maybe because the customers are waiting happily for their turn while they admire the beautiful chocolates. Maybe because the owner and staff are so positive and friendly, maybe that's it. Anyway, the chocolates: they're delicious, and the flavors are so creative. The Dreamsicle is just as described, makes you feel like a kid. The Shichimi has the perfect heat, Lemon Yuzu is so bright. And they are all little works of art. I can't wait to try the rest. Absolutely stunning and delicious chocolate!! Not only are the chocolates works of art, they melt in your mouth with such luxurious and rich flavour. This chocolate is like fine wine, there are a lot of notes in each piece that you really have to relax and enjoy. They have very unique flavours as well as upscaled versions of classic favourites. Even flavours that I typically don't like (ie. mint chocolate) they are crafted so beautifully that it's still so good. A true boutique chocolate shop with simply gorgeous chocolates with every colour and pattern you can imagine, and flavour combinations you cannot. The owner and chocolatier is usually there to chat and is quite affable. The chocolates are going to cost more than Callebaut and it's ilk, but it's worth it for the uniqueness of the designs and flavor combinations (leather and brandy anyone?) A box from here as a gift would send a message of "I really thought about you, I didn't just pick these up from Shopper's". read more

Stopped by on a blustery afternoon, a day before Christmas Eve. The shop is small but very well kept. We purchased about 30 pieces of these beautiful chocolates that look like pieces of art. The chocolates are delicious. They usually give you a sample. My favourite is the Lychee Rose. When you order a box of 12 - they usually give you a free truffle. They also have imperfect chocolates in a bag that you can buy for cheaper. I was able to pick up a bunch of chocolates that were also gluten-free for friends as a gift. read more

I was there only hours ago and had to immediately write my experience down. The owners of the chocolate lab, from the moment I walked through the door, were unfailingly kind, patient and generous. After trying a delightful sample, I bought a box of 12 for my friend, with only the directions 'whatever you think would make an good introduction'. The Chocolate: A beautiful, visual experience - the chocolate boasts a high sheen and a pleasing aesthetic. The taste is divine. I tried the Starry Night and even though I'm used to dark chocolate overwhelming the palate, this was balanced wonderfully with caramel and the slight hint of sea salt to complement the caramel. The Packaging: A lovely grey box that then is slipped into a white sleeve with CL logo on top. Very classy and would make a excellent and unique gift. The Caramels: I love lavender and had hardly read 'Blueberry Lavender' before I was buying the caramel sample bag. A reasonable $8 for an assorted mix of homemade caramel. While I will be honest and say I haven't tried any yet - I must say that my excitement knows no bounds. All around I would recommend The Chocolate Lab for a lovely little midday treat - it's a lovely space and has the feel of looking at art. Delicious delicious art. read more

I was given a box of these chocolates and they are the most beautiful chocolates I have ever seen. My favourite ones are the ones that sparkle since I'm a sucker for bling. After hearing how great an experience my friends have had here with the friendly staff and seeing pictures of the chocolates, I decided to buy a box as a gift. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and was looking forward to finally visiting for the first time. Unfortunately I had a really bad experience with the staff who assisted me. Since I have never tried chocolates with the flavour and style Chocolate Lab offers and I have never had their chocolate before, I asked about the flavours and types they had. She was very curt in explaining the chocolates to me while she was very friendly and patient with the couple before me. I asked to sample the flavours they had samples for and she was extremely reluctant to let me try. She said to me this is not a sample business. I had no idea what to say to that. I have shopped at premium chocolate stores and I have never had any chocolatier say this to me before or limit the number of chocolates I sample. I do not think I was out of line to ask for samples since I had never tried them before and I was genuinely interested in knowing what they were and handpicking a gift. I did not ask for an excessive number of samples, just the ones they had. I understand that each chocolate is expensive however they have samples for a reason to let customers try the chocolate. She was reluctant to even give me one. My friend said she tried six samples once! My intention was not to try as many samples as I could or just sample and then leave. I think she was very rude and out of line for saying this to me. I was really upset and it bothered me since I have never had such a bad experience from customer service. Since I had specially made the trip to purchase a gift, I did buy a box or else I would not have bought a box for myself. In hindsight, I should have left when she said that to me. Because of this experience I do not have a good impression of the Chocolate Lab and I would not recommend it. I do not think the taste is very unique or delicious and the prices are steep. I think it sells because the chocolates look good. Hopefully other customers do not have the same bad experience as I do. I would recommend going to other chocolateries such as Bernard Callebaut where I have always had a good experience with the customer service and the chocolates are delicious and beautiful! read more

Every piece of chocolate is a tiny edible piece of art! Showcase is so beautiful! I had the chance to speak with the owner due to my friend's dietary restriction. She was super friendly and knowledgeable, spending the time to talk and introduce their chocolates. I also got to sample their bacon toffee and it's AMAZING! They also have pre-made sets for easy grab-and-go purchases. My friends will definitely be delightfully surprised by these chocolates and I will definitely be back for more chocolates for me! read more
