From the outside, this store that's tucked away in a residential area doesn't look like much…read more Inside, it's immediately obvious that there's more than than a bookstore going on. The books are used, and the selection isn't particularly discriminating. Most of the fiction is popular, and there's a sprinkling of specialty topic areas. The cafe is the first thing noticed when entering. When we were there, friendly locals were sitting at the tables, chatting. One of the most surprising "side" hacks was a sign informing visitors that they also do dry cleaning. It made me smile.

I did not recieve the book I had ordered because of a ridiculous problem with Canada Post (the key…read morewas not left in my mailbox for me to open the box to get my book. So without my consent or even trying to contact me or simply CHECKING MY BOX TO MAKE SURE THE KEY WAS EVEN PUT INSIDE, Canada Post returned the book to sender which could have cost me over $50.00). So the fact that I did not recieve the book in the mail is not the fault of the book seller at all. However: I would have been absolutely happy to have left a 5-star review and given the owner extra money on top of the sales price to make sure I got the book, but as it turns out-- I reached out to the seller to try and figure out a solution, and she did not return my phone call which is not the best thing to do when you're running a business. In the end, I did recieve a refund for the book (but not the delivery charge) so I can't say that I'm pleased to have wasted a whole month of my time plus around $20, and I didn't even get the book that I was wanting. Which was extremely disappointing as it was going to be a gift for a family member. ****Public Service Announcement: If you recieve a message saying that your parcel has been delivered to your community mail box but there is no key left for you, contact Canada Post immediately or they will return it to sender and you will be wasting time, energy and money trying to figure out what happened.****

We bought a couple of books and then went to another bookstore right beside it and found more selection and much better prices. On the plus side, this store had a decent selection of books and was well organized. These are the reasons this store earned two stars instead of one. When we went to the cash to purchase my books, the owner was surely, stoney-faced, just ripped my receipt from the debit machine, didn't look up or thank us and went back to sitting behind her desk.

Sign is out, open sign on. just off my plane ready for some retail therapy. I call out "hello?' After about 3 full minutes the retail clerk shows up. I wait near the door because in Vancouver its bad form to burst into a shop without offering to check your bags (I assume the shoplifters are as bad if not worse here. I'm like "wow! I can't wait to have a quick shop. I'll just set my bags down here" my bags have viable harbour air laptop tags and I'm carrying a, albeit quiet, luxury handbag. Oh and wearing cute new furry moon boots. I was a bit wet from the showers outside. But it would be a very huge stretch to think I was transient/homeless. Regardless of what class or financial situation a person is, I would want my.retail front line representation to treat all visitors with respect and to serve all visitors until the time we close as advertised.. That said, our associate responds to me "Nope I'm going to start cashing out amd cleaning up, come back tomorrow" I look at my phone and say (respectfully) "it's 5:54pm, looks like I've got 5 mins to check it out after all ha-ha!" He's like, "sorry I'm already closed' and grabs the sign and carries it in. So I was totally insulted, tbe way he looked at me and the snobby face he made...I felt..judged? So I respond "you know I have 5 bills on me right now and prob would have spent it !?" (My husband would be late to pick me up so we decided I would wait for him at the local "casino nanaimo" down the street So I being the gambler I am, loaded up on cash before heading to the plane) I guess that offended him as he responds angrily: "if you are going to be like that. Don't you EVER come back" I'm like bewildered, disappointed "???woah man, slow down, really,?" He marches in angrilly fussing with his sign. Bangs the door closed and audibly locks it saying nothing. They carry a diverse selection of clothes, hats, shoes, wallets, bags and bathing suits from brands like Obey, Sitka, Brixton and Tom's. The prices are amazing and I often find great, unique pieces here that I don't find anywhere else. The store itself is super inviting and is a beautiful space, the staff are always helpful and welcoming. Whenever I visit I always feel genuinely welcomed and never feel pressure to buy. They are always really good to their customers, its an absolute pleasure shopping at Lucid, I wish we had more places like this in Victoria!
