Oh, The Cheese Society, how I wish I could charter my own little plane right now to fly across the sea and sit in the warm of your cozy cheese-centric cafe. Of the many eateries my husband I tried during a two-week trip to England, The Cheese Society stands out as one of the best. Tucked at the bottom of Steep Hill in Lincoln, it's part cheese shop, part cafe, fully lovely. I had no trouble finding a seat at a communal-sized table in the middle of the store on a weekday for lunch. The cheese-monger working behind the counter came by several times while I was enjoying my meal to ask if he could "ply me with cheese" - the answer was always, without thought, "yes!". He was so kind and incredibly knowledgeable about cheese. The menu is fairly small and - you guessed it - completely centered around cheese and all its glory. I had a cheddar & herb scone which I won't stop dreaming of any time soon, which was served with a slice of Godminster cheddar and butter on the side. I have since had Godminster flown across the ocean to my front door. Being a cheese glutton, I also ordered the Lincolnshire Rarebit, their spin on Welsh rarebit. It was also utter perfection. IIIIIII love this place. It's no secret that I ruddy love cheese, and this place has a shop and restaurant. Can you really base an entire menu on cheese? I hear you ask. Well, in one word, yes. It is quite likely, that you will have to wait, but these guys are aware of their popularity, and they have comfy seats where you can wait, and have a glass of wine if you fancy. Varied menu, with gluten free options, though the gluten free bread was a but disappointingly cake-y. I've been here three? times now, and I've never been disappointed, though with that much cheese, do be fully prepared for a food coma, and maybe gout if you get addicted and come here everyday. The shop is also great, we've had many a floor picnic which we have supplied from here, as it's far more polite to collapse with a food baby in private! read more

Over priced menu not a lot of choices cheese over £6 when you could go to frasher cafe shop and the cheese scones are twice the size for £2.80 and friendly staff the young ones at the cheese society were good just the older lady seamed to clare at you and did want you there read more

It's difficult to categorise this place as it's not just a coffee shop, it's a cafe/restaurant and mostly it's a cheese shop with delicious, mouth watering cheesy specimens to ponder over and try before you buy. I tried some of the Woolsery goat's cheese on the shop lady's recommendation and was a complete convert. The cafe area is nice enough - they've not spent a fortune on the tables and chairs, like, but it's clean and modern and comfortable. The menu is varied and reasonably priced - soup of the day is about £4, but it's homemade and super tasty. Or should that be soup-er tasty. My mum had some when we came and I forget what flavour it was but it was so nice she asked for the recipe. I went for the steak and chips for £9 (I think it's my own personal rule that if steak is on the menu, Lucy has to eat it). It was delicious. Omnom. The rest of the menu is cheese orientated - ploughman's, focaccias with goats cheese, baked camembert and the like. Well worth a visit if you're in Lincoln. AMAZING!!! I ordered a gift package for my dad for Fathers day. He loved it!! Asked if there could be fathers day every day, lol! The package was of super high quality and was a really well thought out selection - also a really great price for what what was included and the size of the cheese! I ordered this from the USA for delivery to dad in UK, and I had forgottent to check the postage box and had said he would pick up from the store. Lucie the director emailed me to make sure if this was correct - I'm so glad she did as I would have been wondering why he never got it! Such great customer service. What an amazing shop. When in for lunch and glad we got there just in time as no sooner as we sat down the other tables filled up and a dozen others queued for a place. The food was a treat with local Lincs produced used in many of the dishes. Lots of traditional fayre with twists and presentation of great quality. The staff were great offering advice on their favourite puddings and making us feel completely at home. A visit is a must. read more

This is a mediecore little cafe and neither a bistro nor a restaurant. I ate here many times before they banned children. What a mean, discriminating little set-up. The food is ok and I used to like eating there for the cheese focus. It's not the best though and I've had better cheese dishes in many non-cheese restaurants. The fondue, for example, lacks the richness and kick that one would expect in a good Swiss restaurant. There are much better cafes, bistros and restaurants in Lincoln however, all of which welcome children. My daughter (now 8) has eaten at Locanda Locatelli, Pierre Koffman's & Richard Corrigan's Bentleys (Oyster Bar) (amongst others in London and Paris) and has always been welcomed. It is really important that people and organisations in the UK get the message that it is perverse to discriminate against children (and women and parents) and this discrimination is a destructive force in our society. read more

Dreadful place - about 2 years or so ago they put a notice up on the door banning children under 10. This is a day time cafe that closes at 4pm! I think the owner must either hate children or be so greedy that he/she wants to make sure that every seat is taken by a customer that is likely to spend optimum amount of money (rather than a seat taken by a child). This discriminatory practice shouldn't be allowed in this day and age and I hope this cafe is forced to revoke this outrageous ban. read more

I liked eating here until they banned children. Since I wrote my first review pointing this out on tripadvisor, there have been numerous over-the-top positive reviews, some making some pretty vitriolic comments about children. These recent reviews really overrate this cafe. Food could be good but it's not spectacular. The cafe is bland and lacking in atmosphere. It is really disheartening to see people writing positive reviews simply because they don't like to have children around them. read more
