After disengaging from this place due to relocation, we considered some of the etiquette from the staff to be odd after the fact, especially since it was only our first visit, no rapport with them, and the vet was so opinionated about how or what the regular care has been like for our cats with the previous vet practice we had & what has been going on with my cat After we moved, I got a text message reminding us of their needs & to make an upcoming appt but it was phrased in such a way that it was sus, especially since the vet never directly mentioned my cat is "obese" (about 9, 10 lbs) and is to date w dental cleanings. They had all the records for both kitties! I had them send me his most recent history with them and nowhere is his weight listed on the chart. Its fine they may use this generic message to reengage pets/people to come in, yet seems gimmicky- get a second opinion if need be! read more

My fur baby was very ill. Everyone at the Cat Practice was honest and realistic about her chances without being rude or brutal. They also took the time to comfort me and reassure me as much as they could. They were very kind, and the vet who saw her originally even called me to follow up after everything was done. They were supportive, and worked with me on pricing as they understood I am not in the most financially stable place right now. Although my sweetie girl is no longer with me, I would highly recommend the Cat Practice. They made a very painful decision as simple as possible and were compassionate. When I adopted my kitty, his current vet was The Cat Practice. So I continued to have him seen here. He is an older domestic shorthair with a thyroid problem. This means he is on prescription food. I was constantly told he needed his internal organs checked, a slew of vaccines, professional dental cleaning, an echocardiogram, blood tests, and a bunch of other services that seemed excessive. When I asked the price of the visit, I was told it would be upwards of $560. I wasn't able to afford that price for a regular cat visit, (and apparently he'd need these services on a regular basis) so I asked what the minimum would be in order to continue him on his food, and I was basically told the only way he'd be able to get seen is to complete all of these treatments. I begin looking for other vets. Not to mention, I am getting called multiple times a day, multiple times a week. I have more calls from The Cat Practice than my own doctor. And the emails are out of control. Every time I do answer, I'm told, "Hi, we are so glad to finally hear back from you. We've been so worried about Pipe and would hate to see his health decline. He needs to be seen for these treatments or we don't know what will happen." I begin to feel I am being a horrible cat mom, so I try again to speak with them. After all, I love my cat, as we all love our animals, and do not want him to be sick or in pain, or declining. At this point, I'm trying to explain that at the base minimum, to continue on him on the food that keeps his thyroid in check, what in the least needs to be done, and I'd try to do the other treatments later when I could. Again, they insist he needs every single service in order to even see him. I felt I was left no choice but to get a second opinion. THE FINAL STRAW, when I explained to Ginger at the front desk that I couldn't afford $560+ for a visit, she asked me if I was still employed with my company, and literally said, "Well, talk to them, see if they'll handle the bill, and then give me a call back." That was it. I have never in my life heard of a vet office suggest a client ask their place of employment for financial help. I get his medical records from the Cat Practice and bring him to his new vet. They see Pipe, look through his medical records prior to the visit and explain during his exam that Pipe is in wonderful health for a 10 year old kitty. His thyroid has been in normal levels for quite a while, and the only thing required for his prescription food was a simple blood test to check his thyroid. This visit was $150 including a full exam, and panel. That's it. And they wrote me the prescription and off we went. Please consider the fact that I spend everyday with this cat. He is very playful, has a healthy appetite, keeps a nice clean coat, has normal bowel movements and his urine isn't unusual in anyway. There are no signs of anything unusual, unhealthy, or to be concerned about. I am not a negligent cat owner, and I spend lots of time inspecting him making sure he is good, no wounds, bites, and no overgrooming, etc. Beware of The Cat Practice. They are extremely pushy, unprofessional, and insist on services that are unnecessary, while painting a picture that your beloved pet is in medical danger. I hope, if you are bringing your animal to this practice, that you get a second opinion. read more

Let me start out by saying that I am that crazy cat lady. My cat is my baby, my child, whatever. I've had her for 11 years and she means the world to me. So when she started feeling sick I brought her in to the Cat Practice. I had seen their mural on the side of the building but multiple friends of mine told me this is where they brought their cats. Since I was new to the area, I was glad to have multiple recommendations to anywhere. Wow. I was seriously impressed. They took in my baby right away...no week long wait. They did an exam and deduced that she'd need to come in for an ultrasound...they suspected liver cancer :( They scheduled the ultrasound for Friday of the same week when an ultrasound specialist from the LSU Vet school in Baton Rouge would be in town (Right!!). It was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Apparently these people don't work because they called me that Saturday to check on my baby girl, AND on Memorial Day when they got the test results back. Seriously. Who does this nowadays? During this whole ordeal they kept in touch almost every day, checking on my baby and making sure she was okay after the ultrasound. They let me take as many free samples of their Science Diet food when I was distraught from the potential cancer diagnosis and told them it was the only food my kitty was eating. They said she was too skinny and needed to eat, so take them. I called for a follow up appointment this week, a few months later, and they could take her the next morning. Not only that, they would keep her for me during the day until I got off of work!! What kind of service is this! It turned out my little girl only had nodes on her gall bladder and not cancer, yay! I feel so lucky to have these guys close by. I can't imagine taking my moochie snookums anywhere else. Top notch place. They really care about your feline friends. read more

I wish I could give The Cat Practice 100/5 stars. I recently became a client with my diabetic cat. My regular vet could not get an appointment for 2 days. I suspected it was something that needed immediate attention and I really wanted to avoid a animal hospital since his care has spiraled in terms of cost. Not only did they immediately get us in for an appointment (despite not even being a current client) but the entire staff has given me confidence in the plan of treatment for my little guy. Dr. Cousins is extremely knowledgeable, realistic and specializes in feline practice. I am also a dog owner and love dogs, but it is wonderful to bring my cat to a space that he isn't even more stressed out due to barking dogs on leashes sticking their faces near his carrier while waiting to be checked in. It's truly a cat friendly space. All of the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, willing to help, and go over the top in terms of keeping me updated while he has been in their care. I started this review years ago when I brought my cat, Iphy, here and was pretty impressed with the level of customer service, from the moment you walk in the door. This gives you the important impression that your furbaby is going to be in good hands. Reception: Joann is usually there, or other really nice, welcoming ladies (sorry, I forgot everyone's names! Now that I've been here more often than my own doctor or dentist I should know better). I have to give Joann special props (more to come on this later). Getting back to my initial experience here, Iphy passed at home, the morning that I was to bring her in for more tests. I called to tell them about her passing and they were so sympathetic and helpful with discussing what to do with her remains. I returned a couple years later for my next elder cat, Chick's senior profiles and check-ups. Again, very impressed with Dr. Cousins and his vet assistants and I believe there's another vet or two that I have met. All are very careful with taking time to explain things to us. I was happy with my experiences here, but (and this isn't their fault), the location for me was so damn inconvenient that when my younger cat, Klaus, was having some health issues, I went to another vet that didn't require me to cross Canal. Note: if you live in the CBD, Uptown, Central City, LGD, etc. I ENVY YOU because I think I'd come here all the time just to buy toys and see what cool products they have. It's like a cat boutique in here! I'm not going to throw this other vet under the bus, because this is hardly their fault, but as soon as we walked in, all I could hear was dogs barking and this freaked my cat out, who was already stressed due to not feeling well and not digging car rides or vet visits! I knew then that I'd be going back to Dr. Cousins for his next visit. Ending this review on a sad note, I just recently had to put my beloved Chick to sleep a couple weeks ago because when I brought him in due to his slow decline and difficulty breathing, test results revealed the worst diagnosis: large cell lymphoma. I wanted to write this positive review because the care and consideration displayed by all of the staff at the Cat Practice really just... made me feel like I was being comforted by family. Everyone from vet assistants like Tabitha who always seemed to have a special affection for Chick, to Dr. Cousins to Joann. Again I mention her because she's just standout with customer service. Walked us through the process with kindness and helped make arrangements. The compassion, respect and dignity shown towards my us, and especially our little guy who was sadly just suffering to the point where I knew I had to make that decision, was outstanding. We were able to have private time with him before, throughout (I held him as he passed) and after the procedure. In closing, I mention location again. If I didn't love this place so much and trust that they are the utmost specialists for my cats- and yours- I would not be braving CBD and I10 traffic. But the Cat Practice is just 100% worth it (and wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't coming from 1/2 hour East). I was going to send a thank you card, but instead, I think a 5-star review left on Yelp will be effective in influencing other cat parents to come here. Also note that I've used 4 other vets in New Orleans for everything from spaying/neutering to check ups to vaccinations to flea prevention, many of them excellent but the Cat Practice trumps them all. Rip off. They charged us for tests they did not run and we did not request or approve. Then refused to refund the cost of our tests when caught. They also butchered our kittens neutering. We called with concerns regarding his recovery which they said was completely normal (bleeding for weeks, swelling and abnormal tissue poking out thru stitches). I took him to our regular vet only to be told it was not normal and that they did a bad job. Strange business practices. This whole ordeal cost a lot of money for a simple procedure which they botched. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. read more

She stayed a few days and they were so compassionate and kind in their communication with us and in their care of her. So this is actually my second experience with the Cat Practice, as they initially took care of my kitty Viper 10 years ago when I first lived in New Orleans. Took really good care of him, including treating him for a bad flea infestation (darn roommate that wouldn't treat his dog for fleas kept giving my cat fleas, poor Viper was miserable!) and getting him through a severe respiratory infection that did require a brief hospitalization. So when I found out that I was moving back to New Orleans for work after being away for multiple years, I immediately called The Cat Practice, was thrilled to hear that Dr. Cousins was still there, and made Viper an appointment. It was hard not being able to go into the clinic with him (due to COVID restrictions), but Dr. Cousins and the whole team kept me updated every step of the way, and were great at explaining everything that they were doing and recommending. Would definitely recommend, and looking forward to having a reliable vet in town to continue to take care of my (now senior) kitty. read more

Their staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, with great phone manners, which matters when you work at an office with cat-owners (seriously... wrar). I had an absolutely fantastic experience with the Cat Practice. My former vet miss-diagnosed (and miss-medicated) my very sick cat after I rushed her in for an emergency appointment one morning. Because my cat got progressively worse, I decided to rush her back to the vet the following morning. My former vet could not see us so I turned to Yelp and called The Cat Practice who took us in immediately. Dr. Dunn and Dr. Cousins are the most thorough veterinarians I have ever experienced. They promptly tested for every possible ailment associated with my cat's symptoms. I appreciate this approach because it results in a quicker diagnosis and treatment to get my cat healthy sooner. Logically, this approach is also cheaper in the long run because you don't end up treating all possible ailments until you find the right one. When I took my cat in, they had to keep her for the day. The doctors gave me their phone numbers and told me to call any time for an update. My cat is almost back to 100%, thanks to the Cat Practice. One of the most phenomenal things about this practice is the doctors have followed up with me two times. I have received phone calls from them asking about my cat's recovery and discussing with me any remaining issues, what I should look out for, and answering all of my questions. I have never had such an open line of communication with a veterinarian. read more

Let me firstly start off by saying that I am a dog owner, not a cat owner. My experience with the cat practice came when my little yip yap dog got lost and was eventually found with many scratches/cuts on her face and bottom. Someone made the suggestion that she was probably attacked by a cat. I went to the cat practice to find out what they thought and what I should do if in fact my dog was attacked by a cat. I could not have ask for a nicer staff to greet me and look at my dog, I feel as though it says a lot about a staff who is willing to help someone out like that. Since then I have recommended The Cat Practice to some of my friends who are cat owners. I highly recommend them, they are not just there to be there, they enjoy their work and are good at it. We were coming through New Orleans and wanted to board our 2 cats. This place was just wonderful. I was really nervous because I had never boarded my cats, and they had already been pretty stressed out after a very long drive so far. The Cat Practice made me feel totally comfortable. Stopped going here years ago because of the woman at the front desk who happens to be the Vet's wife. She was extremely pushy, but worst of all my cat was almost kept over the weekend because I was 3 minutes late to pick her up from boarding. I called and begged, sped as fast as I could around Superdome traffic. It had been a long Thanksgiving week and I know my cat wanted to be home. Not allowing a 3 minute grace period is disgusting and they should be ashamed to operate a business this way. These pets are our children. When I requested my cat's records, she was rude when I asked how long it would take..."well do you need it now?" I meant to write this review 5 years ago. Three cats later, we have an amazing vet who gives us no issues, never pushy, and would never leave our pets for pathetic revenue after being 3 minutes late! Let me start out by saying that I am obsessed with my cats. They are my babies. My new kitten got sick, but eventually got better with an antihistamine prescribed by an outside vet. Then, my older cat came down with it. I took my older cat to her (now former) vet, who prescribed another antihistamine, after I told her I had tried a little of the kitten's on her and it didn't work. Needless to say, it again did not work. I googled around and decided to take my baby to The Cat Practice. They were able to schedule me for a same day appointment. Now my older cat is an angel, but she goes complete exorcist at the vet. My cat's precious vet would not even touch her to check her breathing or take her temperature. Not even with a sedative. She had a folder that was labeled 'will bite'. I would understand this if they actually did something for my cat. Dr. Cousins at The Cat Practice wasn't intimidated at all. What a kind and loving doctor towards his patients. He explained to me in detail about what he suggested for my baby and really treated her from all different angles. My baby was done after 4 hours (precisely the time they told me she would be done) and the wonderful and loving front desk staff didn't want me to leave until I was able to meet with Dr. Cousins again so he could tell me that my baby did a beautiful job. The price was maybe 10-15 dollars more expensive per procedure, but it was worth it. And I'm not someone made of money-- but I'd rather spend a bit extra than spend another $50-$60 on an office visit where the vet wouldn't even touch my cat. These people are angels. I knew my baby was in good hands the whole time. I can't recommend The Cat Practice enough! read more

When my oldest was battling for his life with some kidney issues, Doc Cousins not only informed me on a very basic level what his situation was and all my options with the biggest heart and compassion possible. I was a client of the Cat Practice from 1988 until 2004 when I left the city. I returned to NOLA in 2019 and one of my first things I did was to get my cats registered at the Cat Practice. I have never been disappointed in the care I have received there for my cats. Dr. Cousins is extremely knowledgeable and empathetic and takes the time to educate the cat owners on the issues their critters have. The staff is terrific, including the office manager. Doc has been caring for my six cats for eight years. I went to him bec one of my cats had acromegaly and Doc is the only Certified Feline Veterinary Specialist in the state. He loves cats, attends to them carefully, listens to their people and to them. He keeps up on the latest research and treatments, too, and is not pushy. The staff are accommodating, friendly, and caring. People come from all over the state to see Doc. Their Endymeow party every Mardi Gras is marvelous, too, and Ginja does all the fabulous cooking for us humans. They really are like a close community and treats their patients and their humans very well. Tabitha is the best vet tech in the world, too, though I consider her a vet nurse bec she knows so much and is so very good with my cats. It is so much more pleasant, too, bringing my cats to a place where there are no dogs smells or sounds. Keeps the stress level much lower that way. Boarding is great--there's a big soothing fountain in the cattery! read more

I am very disappointed with my experience at the Cat Practice. I called to make an appointment and spoke at length with the woman on the phone about what I wanted: a grooming and a urine test for my cat. My appointment was made for 10:30, the woman explained sedation may be necessary but that they would be able to handle it that day. The day before the appointment, I received a call for confirmation and I verbally confirmed with the woman on the phone. When I arrived, I was told by the woman at the front desk that my appointment had been cancelled. I explained that I had never cancelled my appointment. She then told me that if I wanted a grooming I needed to be there between 8 and 9 am. This was never explained to me on the phone. There was no apology for the mis-scheduling, just the front desk woman repeating that grooming happens between 8 and 9am. They decided to try to fit me in for the urine test and took me into an exam room where I met Dr Cousins, who was friendly enough and explained the procedure for obtaining a urine sample. The vet tech then explained that they were booked up for sedations that day and I would need to make another appointment. I am pissed because I drove across town and was charged $60 for a vet to listen to my cat's heart and lungs when the whole reason I came was for a grooming and a urine sample. I understand the vet needing to do his exam but at no point did anybody acknowledge the fact that the Cat Practice had made a mistake both when they scheduled my appointment, and then when they wrongfully cancelled it. They said I would need to reschedule for the services I had originally come for but why would anybody want to return after this experience? This business has shown me that it is poorly organized, does not accept accountability for their errors, and they make the customer pay for it. read more

This place is WONDERFUL!! These are CAT PEOPLE!!! The entire staff was extraordinarily kind in office and on the phone. They really seemed to go out of their way to make me feel like my little kitty was getting the absolute best care. My cat Artie was here for radioactive iodine treatment, so she did have to spend several days here. It made the entire experience less stressful to know she was in such kind and attentive hands. They encouraged me to call and check up on her, which of course I did and each time they were so friendly and offered whatever info I asked. Absolutely recommend this place!!
