Magnificent Capitol Theatre in downtown Yakima

Magnificent architecture, cultural gem I was astounded at my first look inside this theater. I had no idea Yakima had such a wonderfully restored magnificent theater from an era when theaters were truly amazing. There is a hallway on the lower level that has a photo story of the original theater and the fires that have destroyed it. Twice. The ceiling mural is remarkable, the ornateness of the entire theater is just wonderful. And on top of that the touring stage productions are first class. What a find. We saw a touring Broadway show and found that we got to enjoy it in a magnificent venue. Ushers are super friendly and helpful.

Ask the Community - The Capitol Theatre

What about handicap access and seating or room for wheelchair or walker?

All handicap seats are in the main floor on the outer isles. They are designed for wheelchairs. The balcony has an elevator but you will still need to go up or down stairs to the seats

It's intimate, classy and has that perfect local feeling, all wrapped up into one spot. It's located downtown near the YMCA and I believe it's an old Orthodox Church, at least based on what it looks like. For a few hours every week, there's an area open in the front of the building where you can buy "I Heart Yakima" merchandise. In addition, they have art displays there that rotate throughout the year. On the opposite side of the building is the auditorium. It's a beautiful spot that appears to be an old church sanctuary. They're beautiful Stainglass windows flanking the sides as well as a dome top it is absolutely spectacular. The stage is not overly large, but accommodates a band quite nicely. Seating is church pews as well as small tables and chairs upfront. There's main floor seating as well as balcony seating. The balcony stuff is pretty rad, as it gives you a little bit better vantage point and has some sections that have a very old-school theater type feel - Like something you would see out of a movie about Ford's theater, but without the tragedy. The shows that they've got here I've become increasingly great and this year have included some world-class jazz, Bluegrass as well as some up-and-coming artists. While the acoustics here are not perfect, they're solid and the intimate nature of the place makes for a wonderful evening. And because this is Yakima, the folks that come here are super friendly and will often come and mingle with the crowd afterwards. The most expensive tickets that we've seen here were $45 for a band that won a Grammy eight months ago! This is one of the coolest venues that we've had the pleasure of attending shows at and one that we are really excited to continue to support. You guys running it are doing a great job of bringing an eclectic array of art, music and theater into the area and it's absolutely something to check out.

Dancing to live music can be religious, so it was fairly fitting to see (and dance to) a Cuban…read moreSon/Cha Cha Cha band at a concert hall which used to be a church (1st Church of Christ Scientist). Complete with rays of colored light shining in through the stained glass we showed up early for a dance lesson of Cuban Son--this old style of dance (grandmother to modern salsa) is hard but elegant looking. After the lesson was the show. The venue is pretty dang awesome [solid 4.5 stars on a first visit]. The acoustics were top notch. I made a quick scan of the entire space and there really isn't a bad seat. Their is a huge balcony. There is an open space near the stage for dancing (I clumsily tried my hat with salsa, and we had a few ruedas going as well). They served some refreshments as well as beer and wine when we were there. . . Visiting the "Palm Springs of Washington", sitting in a pew with a bottle of beer tucked into the bible/hymn book holder, listening to traditional Cuban Son, and dancing sexy moves in a former church....it was surely surreal... . . ...And made me a fan of The Seasons. There will be a summer series of Latin music over the summer, and I can't wait to check it out again (although, I think these shows will be outside--first one is July 2nd). Amen.
