You won't find any running water here, but there are two reasonably clean vault toilets (glorified porta-potties) and two pull in sites for small RVs or tent campers, plus 5 walk in sites across a foot-bridge from the parking area. Picnic tables and grills make this a nice spot for campers who want something a bit more developed than dispersed forest camping. This campground is at 6,800ft in elevation and is open year round. It's easy to find and is located two miles west of Mayhill right along US-82 and is about twenty minutes east of Cloudcroft, making it a nice stopping point between Carlsbad Caverns National Park and White Sands National Monument.

Deerhead…read moreCampground obviously isn't desolate camping, but it's in a secluded enough area that many sites were open when we arrived. Normally when we go camping I don't care about wi-fi or cell signal because I'm too busy building fire pits and what not, but when we're at a site that we can't exactly just let our dogs go off and roam (because they will steal people's food... Yogi Bear Syndrome), we tend to be confined to our sleeping arrangement areas; lo and behold, we had cell signal! A+ for that. We Netflixed any time we were going to be inside for longer than an hour. The whole campground is pretty nice. We only saw about half, but it seemed to go a lot further than we ventured while pulling the camper. Each site has space big enough for at least a car and some have additional space for a camper (up to 25 feet long). The sites aren't too close together so that's nice. And most of the area is riddled with benches and a couple of fire pits. While we were here we took our dogs on a hike that followed the campsite/highway. Really beautiful and leisurely walk. There were a couple of rules to this site that you should know... 1. It's $20 to camp or picnic here for one car (a trailer or camper doesn't count as an additional vehicle)/two people any more than that and I think there is an additional fee. 2. Dogs must remain on a leash and they do have people checking. 3. Generators can't be ran past 10 PM and before 6 AM. All in all, I enjoyed this campsite for what it was and if we ever need to find a quick spot to tie us over for the night, this will be our first stop.

The spaces weren't super far apart, but we had plenty of room to sit out in our camp chairs and be socially distanced from any other campers without having to wear masks. We had full hookups. The only downside is the highway noise, but all the RV parks in Ruidoso that we saw (and there are A LOT of them) are just off the highway. The fishing lake on site is super cute and if you don't catch anything, you don't pay anything. We caught trout both times we fished. You also don't need any equipment or bait because it's provided. Just show up as you are! There are even apple trees on the property, so we are planning to come back in September or October to taste the apples. Will definitely stay here again. No cell phone service at all. Camp hosts very nice. Deer come to feed morning and night. Bring your hummingbird feeder. Plenty of them here. Cooler than home at 7600' in elevation. You can see how unlevel the site was just by the amount of wood shims I needed to place under the stabilizers. I am currently in dialogue with the owners insurance company. Shame on you Stacy, you changed your website rules and policy information section after the date of the injury and told your Insurance company that this is what I had signed during the time of my stay. Tell them the truth. I have an actual screenshot of your old policy section. I had to have surgery for my injury, which was Called a Lisfranc injury. Now I walk with a limp that may be permanent.

We had called and spoke to the owner to see if we could check in a bit early and be was completely ok with it. When we got there the camp host was extremely rude saying we were there too early being that no one was in our spot and there were so many other empty spots available. we then had our campfire on and eight at 10 she came and advised it was quiet time and the fire needed to be turned off due to "county law" which is complete BS mind you we were not even loud we were just hanging out and there are zero rules staring that fires need to be out at 10. The next night she again came rudely 3 minutes past 10 when we were already putting our fire out stating "REALLY 2 NIGHTS IN A ROW!!" we said we are putting our fire out and she said "well get your clocks fixed to be on time". we pay a lot of money to enjoy our time there. I feel the owner needs to look into this because the campground was not as full as it usually is and they may be running people out with that unnecessary attitude and rudeness.

The trails in the national forest were clean, and easy to walk on. The markers on this trail were far and few between, but the trail was pretty obvious. We got to see elk and mule deer along the way. Also noticed on the back side of the trail there is a frisbee golf course. The leaves were turning over their fall colors. I would love to try this or some of the other area trails again in the winter snow. This park is very close to the village of Cloudcroft so if you need anything to prep for your outdoor adventures, you are close. We will return.
