I was at CVS and saw a banner next store that just read ... Cake. I am sure that there were more words... but all I saw was Cake. This place is so new they do not even have their permanent sign up yet. They are still rolling with their banner. The Cake is not a lie.... The Cake is in Bowie MD, and the Cake is gud. "The Good" - Robert was awesome, I rolled in about an hour before they were closing and there were slim pickings left in the case, although I did manage to score a sick pack of cupcakes. - The cupcakes were moist and tasty, really good. - The salted caramel was my favorite... mainly because of salt. I do love salt... - The box the cupcakes came in had a divider that did not allow them to slide all over and have the icing touch one another... I love it when people think ahead to solve problems that would annoy people. Well done. "The Meh" - The Chocolate Peanut Butter one was equally delicious, but I wanted more peanut butter. I purchased a $20 Groupon for $40 worth of merchandise from this bakery and since it was about to expire I decided to place my order. They had a special menu for Groupon holders and I was able to purchase 12 cupcakes (4 different flavors) and 4 cookies (2 flavors). I decided to purchase the Carrot Cake, Yellow Cake with Vanilla Buttercream, Turtle and Salted Caramel cupcakes and the Snickerdoodle and White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies. The staff member that I spoke with via email was very professional and helpful. I scheduled a time to meet to receive my order but apparently she was running late. After waiting for 20 minutes I called the bakery and the staff member told me that she had a mishap in the kitchen and had to meet me an hour later than my original appointment. She claimed that she sent me an email 3 hours prior to our scheduled time, but since I used my work email I didn't receive it. Please note that when I returned to work today, I didn't see a single email informing me that she would be late. Seems to me that it would've been easier to call me. My number was on my original email. I took all of that into stride because I understand how things happen when baking so I tried to brush it off. When she arrived she gave me my purchase but let me know that she couldn't fill the White Chocolate Macadamia Cookie order because that was the mishap she had in the kitchen. Instead, she replaced it with Chocolate Chip cookies. I took the order to my parents house to share with my family and the six of us were all in agreement....the cupcakes were dry and rather dense. I'm not sure when the cupcakes were made, but they couldn't have possibly been baked that same morning. Everyone was in agreement that I made better cupcakes than these and they found it rather difficult to eat them. Needless to say, I still have cupcakes left over that won't be eaten. Don't get me wrong, they were very pleasing to the eye with nice decorations on each and all of the frostings were delicious, but the cake itself was no bueno. The carrot cake didn't taste like a carrot cake, the yellow cake with vanilla frosting was bland and the turtle cake just didn't taste good. The cookies were pretty average, nothing special to write home about. I appreciate the many options that were offered for my Groupon, but they just weren't my cup of tea and I truly wasn't impressed. This is a wonderful bakery!! It is a small business, but a wonderful GEM!! It is small inside but very inviting when you go inside!! When I went in this most recent time, the owner Sharon was there and she greeted me eagerly even though she was hard at work in the back!! I went in for french macaroons and unfortunately, she was out!! She did tell me when she would have them back out, which I was excited about!! I absolutely love French Macaroons and at $1.45 per, they are a steal!! A lot of bakeries charge up to $1.75 for them! So she is very affordable in my opinion!! Even though I haven't tried hers yet, I wanted to give them a try! I didn't want to drive to Annapolis or even to Montgomery County or DC to get some!! She told me about the cupcake of the month, which is a spiced rum!! She explained all that she puts in them, which I which was very great of her!! I did pick up 2 cupcakes; 1 for myself and one for my daughter!! I got the red velvet cupcake and the classic yellow cupcake!! Both of which were very good! They were $2.25 a piece which can seem pricey, but that is still below average for many bakeries in the area! And they are worth it because they were very good!! She packed them up in a very cute box with her gold label! I thought it was very cute!! I really liked being able to come to her store and talking to her about her products!! She was very nice and extremely helpful!! She made me want to return to her bakery because she was so pleasant!! I will definitely be returning when I want to treat myself and the family!! I ordered my birthday cake almost 2 weeks ahead of time. I had a whole conversation with the woman on the phone about how I wanted lots of buttercream flowers. I asked for almond cake with raspberry in the middle and chocolate buttercream frosting. The almond cake was tasty but dry, the raspberry in the middle was literally as thin as a sheet of paper, the frosting was some kind of thick fudgy something that was NOT buttercream, and the 3 flowers were some pre-made (i.e., packaged store bought) hard pressed sugar that didn't seem intended to be eaten. Today, my fiancé, myself, along with our maid of honor & best man, did some cake testing, and oh my goodness! I hadn't given much thought to a cake, let's face it, while planning a wedding your brain is everywhere. Sharon made it so easy. We corresponded through emails (which is probably the best way to get ahold of me), she gave me a menu for flavors, asked me to pick 4, and set up a date and time to meet. I was already impressed by her quick responses and all the things I read and saw, so my hopes were really high while walking into her shop today. She was already prepared for us; picture albums, cake charts, pens, even bottles of water, were waiting for us on the table. Sharon asked all the relevant questions, even things I didn't even think about. We talked about colors, and different types of flowers, details, everything! One thing I really appreciated was that she wasn't afraid to talk about the price. If there's one thing I've found while doing all this, is that these vendors wanna lock you in before you even know what spending. She explained what things would be a up-charge, and what details were cheaper. While we don't necessarily have a "budget", we also were interested in taking out a second mortgage for a wedding. So it was very helpful to know how much we were looking at paying prior to choosing a million dollar cake. We tasted 4 flavors, Red Bottom, YUM!, Vanilla Bean, and Wedding Cake. All amazing! I was so impressed with cake samples, even they were beautiful, and so fresh! She even agreed to make a layer that was not one of her options on the provided menu. Picked up a dozen cupcakes from here for the office. It's a small storefront location, located in a shopping center (right next to the CVS). Not much to look at from the outside, nicely decorated inside (loved the blues and golds and the ornate trim). I noted there was no inside or outside seating; it's a carry-out place, for sure. There were some plaques recognizing Nostalgia Cupcakes in Annapolis for great cupcakes, so I gather that was a former enterprise of Cake Courtesan's owner(s). Of the dozen cupcakes, I tried three - the Red Velvet, the Mississippi Mudcake, and the Split Decision. The Red Velvet was amazing! Probably the best cupcake I've ever had. I was super-impressed with how light it was - usually Red Velvet cake of any kind is very dense. But it was very soft, very light, and the cream cheese icing was absolutely delicious. I was doubly impressed by the cupcake because I actually didn't eat it until the day after I bought it, and it was still That Good. I had the Mississippi Mudcake right after, and part of me feels like it isn't even fair to comment on it since it had to follow the perfection that was the Red Velvet. I didn't care for the Mudcake near as much - the cake was much denser/heavier, and the frosting was a marshmellow frosting that was too much for me. That being said, I ate almost the whole thing of course, because it wasn't bad - I would just definitely try other flavors before even thinking of having the Mississippi Mudcake again. Later that same day, I got around to the Split Decision - it was less dense than the Mudcake, but denser than the Red Velvet. The buttercream icing was good, but didn't blow my mind like the cream cheese icing of the Red Velvet. Sharon and Fay are a dynamite team. Excellent service, easy process, and very high quality product. I found the pricing reasonable and all that she did within my budget far exceeded my expectations. I'm not a cake person but I thought it was necessary since I was getting married and all... for that reason, I wasn't sure what I wanted and I gave Sharon some very basic guidelines. She created a GORGEOUS marble design using my wedding colors. The end product was classy, elegant, and DELICIOUS. My only gripe is that after the cake cutting ceremony my husband and I somehow missed getting an actual slice of cake to enjoy (our fault for dancing all night I guess). I've used the Cake Courtesan for several of my daughter's events. The cakes were undeniably amazing. My last cake order was immensely complicated. Only a portion of the cake was completed. There was a bit of a problem because of her daily operating hours and, time for the cake I requested. Once construction began she was faced with challenges she did not anticipate before the agreement. However, my cake was not complete but what she did was amazing, BEAUTIFUL, detailed and delicious. I attempted to use a Groupon to try out this local business. Come to find out there is no store front and I had to email my request and meet them somewhere to pick up my order ....OK, i tried to go with it and requested an order 3 weeks in advance. Two days before the expected delivery, I receive an email giving me an hour window to meet them somewhere to pick up my order. This information should have been given to me when I originally placed the order (3 weeks prior). Then i started receiving emails with all capital letters, electronically yelling! After conversing with the owner on Thursday 6/14/12, who by the way showed professionalism and definitely knows her business, I fully understand why her motto is FRESH!!! Nothing baked in advance, only on the same day. With such a variety of cupcakes to choose from based on the day of the week, it rendered my decision a bit difficult. I chose four different flavors and after sampling each and everyone, they were all superior in taste and very moist. The icing was not too sweet as in the store bought cakes which I always scrape off. I have been a loyal customer to Cakes Plus in Laurel for approximately 8 years, and I can definitely say that I will be a return customer to Cake Courtesan. In fact I will be visiting today to pick up some goodies for my staff to try. Her wedding cake designs are some of the most elaborate that I have seen especially the intracacy of the details. I love the cupcakes at the Cake Courtesan. My favorite is the Split Decision, which is marble cake with chocolate and vanilla swirled frosting. I like that their icing is sweet and creamy but not grainy (like sugar as some tend to be at other bakeries). They do tend to sell out of items quickly, but that's because they make all of their items from scratch. The owner told me that she does not have any boxed cake mix or packaged frosting in her bakery. Everything is made fresh daily! Cupcakes are in the $2 range, but they are regular-sized, not the minis that many places are selling for close to $3 each. Also, they sell all of their "day old" cupcakes for 50% the regular price...and whatever isn't sold then is discarded. I'd rather they run out of items than to sell me OLD baked goods that they've had for several days! Check them out, and I'm sure you will find a cupcake that will become your favorite. I would suggest calling first, especially on Saturdays. I don't visit weekly, but I have called to ask what time they closed...only to find they were having a private event and were not open to the public that day. Great cupcakes. Great customer service. scheduled to pick up a sample cupcakes to taste. wanted to try them before i set anything up for my wedding. was told i could pick them up anytime between 10am and 5pm. go there the next day at 3pm and was told she sold my cupcakes because someone else was there and wanted them. first she tired to tell me i had scheduled to pick them up at 11 and when i wasn't there she sold them...thanks to my smart phone i could open up the last email that said anytime between 10 and 5. then she told me that in order to hold the cupcakes i would have had to pay upfront for them...WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT IN THE TEN EMAILS BACK AND FORTH ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!! back peddle all you want but you run a shitty business!
