The Cajun Cleaner is a pretty cool butcher/ store. On a recent visit they had a beer and wine tasting which I enjoyed very much! Pretty cool that you can buy both in here and I went home with a bottle of wine. I also purchased a dinner that you can take home and cook in the oven. It was a chicken and rice dish that I enjoyed but it didn't say that it was made with smoked chicken so the husband and the kid hated it. The dogs enjoyed their share though. I suggest that if you buy one of the premade meals that you first ask what kind of meat is in it and how it is prepared. I got some fresh chicken breasts which were very nice w no fat on them. I also brought home a peanut butter pie which none of us really cared for. We were pretty disappointed since we love peanut butter pie. I took a picture of the Doux South products that they carry and sent it to my friend who was very happy to see that they have her favorite jarred tomatoes. Overall not a bad store. I will try them again and hope for better luck next time. read more

This review is strictly based off of two things: Steaks and Boudin. I wish I had more to tell about. But anytime I make the trip out, that is what I have to get. Hands down, best Boudin I have had outside of Louisiana/Southern Mississippi. It has great seasoning and a good blend of meats. My grandfather who lived most of his life in NOLA and is now in south Alabama, always asks me to bring him some when I visit. The steaks are also incredible. I ask them a recommendations on the cut they are most pleased with. And that usually pleases me. I am interested in the hogshead cheese. But they have it so rarely, I have yet to try it. Excellent Andouille sausage. This is much different from the "Cajun" sausage that you get packaged in your chain grocery store. Very dark and spicy. I love to use it in my red beans and rice. I also recommend the stuffed chickens. The chicken is de-boned and stuffed with crawfish etouffee. Pop it in the over for 45 minutes for a great dinner. read more

I'd passed by this place a hundred times before I actually decided to stop in. Shame on me for not going in before. the selection of different sausage and other meats was nothing short of impressive. They were having a beer and wine tasting when we stopped by, so we were able to sample a bunch of great craft brews for free. They don't only have bottled beer for sale, but a few options on tap, as well. The guys behind the counter were helpful and told us all about the store. It won't be the last time they see me. I drove way out here on Saturday to check out their housemade hotdogs for a little 4th of July gathering. When I got there, the 1/3 lb beef and pork hotdogs in natural casings looked amazing but they only had 6 left and I needed about 15. They nicely offered to make up some fresh dogs while I waited. I had some other area errands to run so when we returned 30 minutes later they were all bagged up and ready. At around $5.69/lb, we are talking some spendy dogs (a little under $2 each), but these were amazing and very flavorful. Good snap, great beefy flavor without being too overpoweringly beefy (ie kayam or hebrew national) and only needed a little mustard. Even though the weather did not want to cooperate, I blanched them then grilled them in near monsoon conditions and they were the hit of the party. I wish V Richard's meat market had anything like these since it's so close. Thanks Cleaver; I will return to try those awesome looking andouille. read more

I've recently started coming to the Cajun Cleaver after I got a major craving for some bisque one night on the way home. After much searching this place seemed like the best option. Loved the bisque and have returned for more since. I also really enjoyed the crawfish stuffing! Young (seem high school age) people have been working each time and they were really friendly, good about answering questions, and have checked in the back for things I wanted. Been buying sausage and beer from Nick for years. My father-in-law is in the Cajun Cleaver a couple of times a week and I get by any time I'm in town. His boudin and brats are outstanding. This year, we ordered our Christmas dinner from the Cleaver. We had the fried turkey, dressing with crawfish, mac and cheese, and squash casserole. The turkey was perfect, juicy and cooked through without overcooking. The dressing was probably the best I've ever had (sorry mom). The mac and cheese had chunks of sausage in it and was fantastic as well. I was not particularly fond of the squash, mom has Nick beat there. In addition to the Holiday food, they have fresh meats, a variety of sausages, and prepared foods like gumbo and stuffed chickens ready to go and the prices are reasonable for the quality. They also sell beer and wine plus craft beers on tap which they sell by the 1/2 gallon. I really hope the community continues to build support for the Cajun Cleaver, it's a real treasure. read more

We ordered a smoked turkey dinner to feed our family and it was delish! This was our first time eating anything from this place so we were a bit nervous ordering our entire Christmas dinner from them but everything was really great. The turkey was moist and so flavorful. I worried that all the food would be spicy like Cajun food typically is but it wasn't. In the past, we've ordered holiday meals from Honey Baked, Cracker Barrel and Whole Foods and have been underwhelmed. We were pleasantly surprised that every dish we tried from The Cajun Cleaver was enjoyable and something we'd order again. We'll definitely be back soon! read more

Stopped into this great place on a recommendation from a local during a short visit to Hoover. The owner was super friendly and attentive. I had a small crowd to entertain last minute and this place solved all of my problems - great custom cut filets, charcuterie, heat and eat side dishes and wine. The wine selection is small but quality! I'll definitely be back if I ever return to Hoover, AL....and will enjoy my Cajun Cleaver Seasoning in the meantime here in TX. Give them a shot! read more

This is my go-to at least once a week. From fresh meat and fish for the grill, to delicious prepared meals to go! You just can't go wrong with The Cajun Cleaver. I've ordered their hot prepared holiday meals as well and my entire family from out of town raves. The staff are all so helpful and friendly as well. I love that I can stop on the way home and pick up an entire meal and a bottle of wine or beer. Not to mention the quality of everything is top notch. Went in here while waiting for a pizza at Johnny Brusco. So glad I checked this place out. First I was greeted when I walked in and asked if there was anything I needed (exceptionally friendly). As I checked out the assortment on hand I was quickly impressed. Original seasonings and sauces, take and bake pre-packaged dinners (huge assortment), fresh butcher cut meats (high quality), local brewery beer (had Urban Farmer), wines, dips (smoked salmon) ....and more!. WOO HOO!! This place reminds me of home! I grew up in New Orleans and there are some things that I took for granted...I sure missed them when I left. I found a great many here!! The crab and corn chowder was taaaasty, as were the many sausages I bought for my family to sample. The Andouille was particularly good. It was great to see that I can come get a pint or quart of gumbo if I get the hankering for it, OR I could just come ge3tr a growler of some yummo local brew! The guys who run the place are down to earth and super helpful. There's always something cooking and it smells DELISH just walking in the door. So glad this is close to my house! read more

The Cleaver rocks it. Small customer area but they pack a lot in to it and who cares. What matters for a butcher is the meat and it is stellar. Want something uncommon like a Tri-Tip? Boom. Want killer sausage? Boom. I swear by their homemade spice mix. It goes with virtually anything. They'll have a couple of expensive grill products like a ceramic Kamado Joe on display though you can certainly find it cheaper online. One cool thing about this place is they have an extensive beer cooler. Large local and craft selection, especially considering it's a small butcher shop. Prices are pretty good but I'd pay more for the quality you get. Good stuff. read more

Nick at the Cajun Cleaver is the best. I looked all over Bham for some beef to make burgers that tasted like the the high dollar burger joints. He offered to get me prime burger. Instead he told me he had the best burger around. I tested his statement. He was telling the truth. If you buy his burger, and you truly want that specific taste, it will deliver. He also has awesome sirloin steaks. I highly recommend the Cajun Cleaver. read more

I have bought ribeyes and kegs from them in the past and always had a good experience. Everyone is always friendly, but after I bragged about the Cajun Cleaver and how great they were I convinced some out of town relatives that they needed to try their steaks. When we showed up the only T-bones they had were frozen solid. I got a couple decent ribeyes that were fresh and they convinced me the frozen steaks would thaw out and cook well so I went ahead and bought them. The steaks looked like hell after thawing and werent very good. Don't call yourself a butcher shop if your going to sell frozen steaks. $175 later and I'll never go back. read more

I ordered a turducken for Christmas. I requested it without the stuffing since we have family members who require a gluten free diet. When my husband picked it up, he was given an unseasoned, deconstructed turducken and told we'd have to stuff the birds ourselves. Very disappointed. read more
