My hair felt so healthy after my appointment and she layered and trimmed my hair to perfection. I wanted some framing of my face and she was totally receptive to my thoughts and made my hair look better than what I had hoped for. I wanted a haircut randomly yesterday and fortunately they had a spot for me at 5pm. I let them know I would be coming from work so there was a possibility of me being 5-10min late, but they were very nice about it. It was a little tricky trying to find the salon because it's located on Portland more so than Queen St and it's upstairs above the little gift shop below. The interior was very cute and cozy. They had one little sofa for guests, and had interesting paintings hung up around the walls. And majority, if not all, their hair products were Bumble and Bumble. I had Johnny cutting my hair, and he was very nice, we chatted about the city, the weather, and other generic topics. The haircut I wanted wasnt anything dramatic, just a shoulder length cut from the awkward mid boob length I originally had. I asked him if he could style my hair the way the girl in my photo had, which was loose and wavy. He seemed a little surprised that I asked, and it made me feel bad for asking right after, but he did anyway. It felt a little rushed, and the curls were nothing like the one in the photo. Mine were bigger and they were framing my face, whereas the one in the photo had smaller curls with them curled away from the face. When I had to pay, I paid with my credit card and realized they didnt give me a tip option. I was mortified because I wanted to tip Johnny but I had only brought my credit card. So next time I will be bringing cash or paying via debit. I wasnt in love with my results, but I'm still planning to go back to get some colour done. read more

After reading so many positive reviews, I was excited to get my hair done at The Cabinet Salon. Unfortunately I won't be returning as I ended up having the worst (& most expensive) colour I have had in my life as well as a less-than-impressive trim. I had had a colour correction consultation appointment a week prior to the actual appointment, and was told that what I wanted was doable. I was going from a super dark cool toned box-dyed brown to my natural colour, a medium ash brown. I emphasized my want for a natural look and showed pictures of what I was going for, but ultimately walked out with a patchy bright red with dark brown streaks. My bangs were noticeably darker than the rest of my hair and the stylist offered to fix it for no extra charge in a follow-up appointment. That was polite & all, however, I couldn't get a follow-up appointment until a week later and so I walked around with crazy-looking hair and puzzled looks from friends & acquaintances for a week packed with presentations and meetings. As you can imagine, I was less than thrilled - especially after dropping $300. Today, about two months later, I finally had my hair fixed to the medium ash brown I had desired months ago at another salon outside of Toronto. I explained to today's stylist what my Cabinet stylist had done & how he had done it and she was shocked. The Cabinet stylist used bleach in patches (as though he were highlighting my hair) to lift my colour, whereas today's stylist used an all-over colour correction cream. She also said she noticed "holes" my cut, which admittedly, I hadn't noticed prior to her mentioning. I definitely won't be back. Though the vibe of the salon is great, the location is convenient & the stylists are friendly, my hair - what really matters - was a mess, even at such a high price point. read more

My hairdresser was professional, did not get water in my ears when she washed it :) That is always a good sign. I loved the in-house shampoo that she used, smells delicious. I spontaneously decided that I was gonna cut my hair short two days ago, so I spent 2 hours on Yelp and BlogTO looking for good hair salons. Hitting 1 hour and 45 minutes, I saw a link, "The Cabinet Salon", so I clicked it and got here. I am so glad that I did because I went in today and had the best hair cut of my life! I've had the same hairdresser for 15 years and I thought that it's finally time for a change. The location is great but the only problem was finding the actual entrance to the second floor; it took me a while but I finally got it! (It's literally across from Loblaws/Winners and around the corner of Outer Layers. I hope this helps someone!) I got there a little early so I was offered some tea which was great, especially when it was -25 out. After waiting a little, Alex introduced himself to me. I sat down and we discussed what I wanted to do to my hair and then he proceeded to wash my hair. (The shampoo smelled amazing!) I sat back down at the chair and he went to work. It was so nice to see him cut my hair. I know this isn't what you normally focus on while you're getting your hair cut, but you can really tell that he enjoys what he does. He didn't rush anything and did everything with care. I'm still very impressed! I left VERY happy and like I said, best hair cut of my life. I will definitely be back again. read more

Since moving to Toronto nearly 2 years ago, I've been trying to find a great hairdresser. The Cabinet, in my opinion is not it. I LOVE my stylist, Johnny. He's awesome. And funny. So funny. But heres my issue: he takes what you say, listens and does it. But does it waaaaay over the top. I asked for my highlights to frame my face a little better - they came out a different colour. His colour is OK - nothing special. His cuts are great - he plays it safe here. Which is good. To me, this is an expensive salon - I paid well into the $200's for colour alone - half head of highlights and toner. The atmosphere is super quiet - no music. Not many other clients (it's a small group). I'm just so meh about this place read more

Petra's my girl! She's super personable and creative and gave me just the cut I was looking for - even on a repeat visit when she challenged me to try something that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I really appreciate that she knows how to work with problem hair like mine and is willing to give and take ideas. The salon is a hidden gem, being upstairs, and the front desk peeps are always on the ball. Plus they're cool about returns and exchanges on their products. I was really glad I came here for my dramatic new look. I was finally ready to chop off my long hair and the result I ended up with was fantastic - I don't even miss my long locks. Renae did a fantastic job styling my hair into this sexy lob. I also had a colour done so I was here for a good 3 hours. I was one of the first customers of the day so it was very quiet and relaxed and it was nice to look out onto Queen and Portland from where I was sitting. I'll definitely be coming back here for maintenance. So pleased with what I got and worth what I paid for. read more

I had a great time here. Cheri listened to my concerns about lumpy curls and kept in mind that I was trying to grow my hair for my upcoming wedding. She was patient and friendly, and really skilled. You can't tell that I lost any length, but it has such a nice shape to it, the curls are well defined. At the end of the appointment she mentioned something about natural looking highlights...so when I'm ready to take that step, I'll definitely be booking with her!! I found The Cabinet while walking along Queen St, in desperate need of a hair cut. I walked in off the street, and while they were busy they said they could certainly accommodate me and offered me a wine or coffee while I waited! Great! It was on the upper floor and was beautifully set up. Very cosy and welcoming. I felt relaxed right away! I had my hair cut by Johnny Ryan. I had a bad cut about 4 months prior and have been vigorously growing it out since - so it was in terribly shape. Johnny was great off the bat. He was nice and talkative, and being new to the country he gave me some great tips. He cut my hair EXACTLY how I wanted it. How many times can a girl say that has happened?! It was perfect. Neat, straight, sleek. Everything a girl could want. Not only did I think it was great, but over the last 2 days I've had about 5 people pull me up on the street to tell me how great my hair looks! All in all, it was a great salon and I will definitely be returning. I've never been happier with a cut in my life! I recommend you stop by and get a quick snip if you ever have the time or the need. Yay! My first time going to a new salon in 7 years and I'm so glad my co-worker recommended Cabinet. I have curly hair and get a partial foil, and having had one bad experience with highlights years ago I'm always afraid to go to a new stylist. I saw Gosia and she did a marvolous job! It was a week before my brother's wedding, so I wanted a fresh color and cut to look my best. Gosia took a look at my hair and replicated what my former stylist did with ease, but even better! The cut is the best I've ever had. Great service here, they offer you a drink (water/wine) while you wait and it's a relaxing atmosphere. It's up on the second floor so less noise from the street. Good music, they were playing 80's/90's hip-hop so that was awesome. read more

Such a beautiful place with so much natural light and shining clean surfaces. I felt so comfortable and relaxed thanks to the nice helpful staff. I struggled to get my jacket off when I arrived and even with COVID and most people staying at arms length, the women who greeted me helped untangle me from my headphones even though I was a bit embarrassed I was very thankful for her kindness. After that I knew this place had great vibes! I met my stylist who with out being able to properly see my face under the mask managed to make my hair frame it beautifully. Monique after meeting me today never having worked with my hair on a good day helped to tame my unkempt mop that was long overdue and make me feel more like myself then I have in months. After several attempts at bringing photos in of how I wanted highlights/balayage done, to various salons, I've never gotten anything close to what I was looking for. I'd even thought the color I wanted wasn't possible with my natural color. But Johnny somehow figured it out! I have dark brown hair that bleach tends to make orange and brassy, but now have actual ash-blond highlights. No, this wasn't cheap, but wasn't more expensive than elsewhere. I got my hair cut here around 6 months ago and although the staff was nice, the cut was not. It was my first time coming here, and I asked for someone who specialized in short hair. I forget the name of my stylist, but I'm pretty sure he focuses more on men's short hair, not women's as he didn't really get what I wanted. I was just getting a trim and wanted to maintain my current style, but he moved my hair part more to the center, which is not what I explained. It just wasn't tidy. Worst part was that he chopped a chunk off of my left bang, randomly! It looked so weird. When asked what he intended that for, he was not even sure: "umm, yeah it didn't turn out like I expected". I left the salon with a chunk of hair poking out right in the front of my head! It was so short that it just couldn't be tamed. Needless to say, I'm not going back. read more

I moved to Toronto from San Francisco a few weeks ago and already had the worst hair experience of my life courtesy of Navigate Hair Salon here in Toronto. Trust me - AVOID. Have mercy for your hair and wallet and spare yourself embarrassing hair. Before Navigate I had another less than satisfactory but surely expensive hair experience in another salon in Queen West district and I was very and super cautious with The Cabinet before making an appointment. I actually came in personally to make an appointment and I have to say the face of the salon (i.e. the front desk young lady) is super friendly, hip and has UH-MAZING(!) hair herself. So I figured I'd give it a try and... BEST DECISION here in Toronto so far. First of all and most importantly the quality of the haircut was great. I have very tough to cut short asian hair which is unforgivable and if you don't know your craft it's going to be all "Screw you!" and show the slightest mistake. In other words if a stylist can cut short asian hair (s)he can cut any hair. The consultation before the haircut was very professional and to the point. Secondly the service was genuinely friendly, low key and they made my experience very enjoyable. It was like visiting with good friends and this is what a good salon should strive to. Thirdly they gave me a discount because it was not a full blown haircut but rather a correction of the awful hair I had (again, courtesy of Navigate Salon). The discount was not necessary but it definitely showed the honesty and pride in the service this salon provides. And one last thing. I liked the set up of the salon. While you are getting your haircut you don't have to stare at yourself in the mirror all the time but you can wander away with your eyes to the busy Queen West street which never disappoints in its views. At first I tried to book with Emma because of her good reputation as a curly-hair master, but since she was fully booked for the following two months, I booked my cut with Alex. I usually walk away from haircuts disappointed. After enough years, and with my unruly hair I have become resigned to mediocre cuts. However, I got a great cut this time!
