Walking past La Belle Normande, the crepes being made caught our eye and drew us in. The ambiance inside was pleasant enough. But the food itself was underwhelming. The sandwich was tough to chew and very light on meat and cheese. You're essentially paying a premium for bread. Everything tasted fine, just pretty basic. For the price and crowd size, I expected more. The staff seemed stretched thin, and the value just wasn't there. Good for a quick bite if you're nearby and patient, but temper your expectations.

On the walls, behind the counter, next to you, behind you... everywhere you look... puppets! This cafe was my favorite find on a recent trip to St Malo where too many tourist traps abound. La Java is an original joint, the real deal where the owner runs his shop with a good dose of humor and booze. Sit down, relax and don't take anything too seriously. The drinks are cheap, the company friendly and the atmosphere is like nothing you'll ever see anywhere else. Enjoy the happy bric-a-brac and wisecracking that pervades this gem of a cafe. If you feel like chatting to the owner, why not sit at the bar on one of the swings? Uh, huh. Yep, they've got swings. Did I mention that I love this place?

It's a rainy, cold, windy day as we wrap up our wonderful San Malo stay so we had to bag our original plans. Wanted to find a cafe for a light meal and found this place. Turns out it was fully booked ( who knew you had to book for lunch @a cafe?)so had to return an hour plus later... so worth the wait... the menu of the day (12€) was home made soup I had mushroom and hubs had a pea and ham; along with Croquet Monsieur ( mine traditional, hub's salmon + goat cheese ) and a most delicious green veggie salad. We each had a glass of wine and finished it off with a pear tart. It was totally a great French experience. The owner came and sat @ we our table to define the menu. Best thing we coulda done on a crummy exploration day. Run don't walk to this amazing place.

They have great breakfast and lunch options (I'm not sure what/if they do dinner). They also had loads of cakes and homemade baked goods at the counter which all looked really nice. The breakfast portions were very generous. I'd definitely go back for lunch as they had Greek style lamb burgers and feta fries on the menu!
