Generally not a bad shop but today paid 4 $ for a stale baguette that had a printed expiry date 3 days from now. It was board hard today what will it be like tomorrow or even the day after. Fresh baguette is baked for same day consumption not 5 day expiry. So it asks the question about what they are doing with the freshness of their other products if they cant even get fresh bread right. Hope that is not the case. read more

This is one of Saskatoon's gems and we shop here quiet a bit. Their selection of cheeses is a veritable cornucopia of bliss. You will find all the cheeses grouped by type, with a lot of variety in each grouping. We notice something new each time we walk in. There are some great preserves here to go with your cheeses and a great selection of gourmet oils. They also have a good selection of olives. If you're throwing a party you can put together a pretty killer charcuterie and cheese plate at this one spot. They have a selection of pasta sauces, which we believe are made in door (but are not certain). You can get anything from bolognese to pesto cream and they're all quite good, especially with their fresh made pasta. There is also a good selection of dips, including tapenade, Mexican Snow and Spinach Dip. The tzatziki blows our minds! They have a freezer of frozen pasta like tortellini, medallions, and ravioli, as well as one filled with ice creams and gelato. There are some cold cuts which are just delicious, as well as sausages. The smoked duck breast seems to have gotten even better lately. We suggest passing on the summer sausage, which seems to have to sour a taste. Do try the pate, particularly the pheasant and pork selection. You can get pot pies and lasagna for easy at home meals. They have a great butcher but it's extraordinarily expensive, which is our only criticism - we've found meat of equal quality at the Co-Op grocery stores, so we do not purchase here except for a few specific items. The Nagano pork chops are worth buying here, and if you ask the butcher to slice it extra thin they make amazing fried cutlets. They sell chicken necks and backs, which is the best choice of bone for soup stocks. We will also purchase ground lamb here, as it is hard to find anywhere else We stay away from beef, chicken, lamb and capons as we feel they are over priced compared to other sources of equal quality. Where else am I going to find Elman's in Saskatoon? Pickled in Winnipeg, Elman's are the best damn Kosher pickles outside of New York. Baba's Barrel Cured are pretty fantastic, but the Baby Dill will always have my heart. Why is this pickled publicity pertinent to a review of Bulk Cheese Warehouse, you may ask? Because it shows that the purveyors of said shop must respect quality and locally-sourced goods. Yes, Elman's pickles are a little jarred beacon of what can be found Bulk Cheese Warehouse; and yes, what you can find is a little bit of everything to make a glorious meal. Carrying not only an intense spread of cheese from all parts of the world (though sorely lacking in goat brie, which really, is slightly inexcusable given the impressive curds that can be found so close by), there is also a high quality butcher in the back of the store. We're talking whole chickens, wild boar bacon, house-made sausage, ostrich, bison... the list goes on. This place is proper. Not only that, there's a entire "bulk" section to this warehouse (just so we're clear, it is decidedly *not* a warehouse of any kind) where one can find pasta, salads, pestos, dips -- all in bulk. The staff are completely ignorant about cheese. The manager told me today that "available" (in other words, when they had it in stock) was the same as "produced by" (in other words, produced during a certain period). She became very aggressive when I said there was a difference between "available" and "produced by"and said I was, "rude." Go to Sobey's. They don't know anything about cheese either. But they're polite. And avoid the pâté. It may be local, but it's as interesting as lard. And avoid the "baguettes". They don't produce them, but they do sell them. They are denser and have less flavour than Wonderbread. If you want a real baguette, cross the street and go to "Il secondo." read more

I'm from Los Angeles and I must say, this was a gem to find. Went here on the basis of the reviews and my love for all things grocery, and loved it. Got the cold smoked chicken and cold smoked new york, as well as their pasta sauce (puttenesca and meat sauce) and two of their varied fresh made pastas (the bf wanted roasted pepper fettucine and I got the lemon dill linguini). I like the fact that if you purchase the sauce of the day, you get the equal weight in fresh pasta (your choice) for free. Then again, I'm asian, so I love all good deals :P. Because I'm expecting the chicken to be amazing since it's gotten shout outs, my boy and I decided to try the new york steak with a side of puttanesca sauce with roasted pepper fettucine. Can you say amazing!? First of all, the new york was perfectly flavored, leaving me wanting more... Though a little on the pricey side (at least for me), it was definitely worth every penny. It had a subtle smokey undertone to the meat and it cooked beautifully on my cast-iron plate... no extra seasoning required. The puttenesca sauce was quite flavorful, though I must admit that the fettucine was really made the side. It had a slight kick to it and really rocked the roasted pepper taste. All in all, I'm expecting good things to come with the meat sauce w/ lemon dill linguini, as well as that cold smoked chicken. But if you're in the area, you'd be sadly missing out if you don't go to this place and buy some foodage... It's worth it. read more

Personal favourites are goat cheese, havarti, dill havarti, and manchego (Spanish sheeps milk cheese). If you need help getting information or taste testing some cheese, their staff is helpful. Aside from their cheese, they have a great butcher shop. They have vast assortment of meat such a beef, pork, duck, chicken, rabbit, lamb, sausage, and more. The meat is quality. They have great beef jerky and pepperoni sticks. They have fresh pasta, pastries, jams, preserves, bread, and much more. It is a great store that I could try to give you an idea, but you need to see it to truly believe and experience it. read more

Love these guys. Each time I go to Saskatoon I try to make these guys part of the visit. It's very difficult to get my hands on good cheese curds and for the province I'm in it's as good as it gets. I'd really love to see these guys pop a sister location closer to where I live (Yorkton, SK) but it's at least closer than trekking all the way to Quebec to get my favorite type of cheese. And the applewood smoked cheddar is fabulous. Grilled cheese sandwiches are never the same now. read more

What a great find and I could not be happier to tuck in here while I warmed myself against minus 40 temps outside! They have a great assortment of jellies and condiments. I was so pleased to find that they carried the famous Saskatoon berries jam and Prairie honey, which I bought as gifts. I also saw a nice display of organic smoked black pepper that I have used since as a wonderful accent for cooking meats. But more than that they have a wonderful selection of cheeses that have been pre-cut to make it easier for you to browse and select whatever cheese you desire. They have a very good array of Dutch, French, Spanish, English and Swiss cheeses. The great and helpful service also helps you move along and just buy everything in sight. They also have a counter filled with fresh pasta, sauces, savoury and sweet pastries and antipasto and freezer and cooler section filled with foods to go. All of these attributes would have been enough to make this place wonderful but did I mention that they have the Butcher House attached and they sell amazing cold smoked meats?!?!?! I had the pleasure of buying a couple cold smoked rib-eyes which were outstanding. I am so pleased that I carried them home to Toronto along with the butcher's own smoked salmon. Excellent and rich. I wish we had this establishment here in Toronto. Almost worth the trip back to Saskatoon. PS- Cold smoked does not mean using frigid temperatures to cure the meat as I mistakenly thought was possible. It is application of indirect heat to infuse flavour on the meat before aging it. read more

I like the cheese selection. The service however could improve and the owner might want to work on his people skills as well. On a serious note I have seen a mouse jumping through the store and the coolers sometimes don't have the proper temperature. Hope they do their business according to standards. I went to Bulk Cheese occasionally to buy some kebobs and some cheese. Someone eventually recommended their Cold Smoked Chicken and it is something I've gone back for many times since. It is amazingly full of flavour. Smoked, flattened, and with a rub of spices on it. $10 takes home the prepared chicken, throw it in the oven, and it comes out fantastic every time. I much prefer this to the pre-cooked BBQ chickens sold in the grocery stores. read more
