Reasonably priced hotel in a fantastic location. It is in easy walking distance to many tourist…read moreattractions and good restaurants. Public transport at door as well. The main downside of this hotel is the poor soundproofing of the room. I have heard the neighbors talking and what they were doing, that should have remained private. Now I hope I am tired enough to sleep through the persistent noise this night.

Only for today I have luxury to be able having day off from work and came here. First thing this place pop in mind for lunch today. I ordered rump and pork ribs combo. The damaged was $ 20. I ordered medium steak with mash and vegetables. My sister order well done with chips and salad, and no.. SAUCE isn't included just incase you asking. Food came and as usual my camera eat first before me.. And I realised there are no ribs on the plate. I came politely and asked if I ordered the combo to the cashier, and since I came like 30' before kitchen is closing for break time, she remembered what o ordered and conformed I did order that. She came to tell the chefs and said 10-15' for cooking time, I don't mind but I found its funny that the chef forget the component of main dish. Chef came and apologies while he brought the bowl of ribs over. I said no biggie shit happened when you are rushing for break time. Steak is cook to specifically what I ordered, happy with it and ribs you can't complain neither, fall out the bone it so soft! I would said money well spent today in this establishment.

Queen Street Studio is an awesome non-profit organisation that offers workshops, residencies,…read moreartist funding and subsidised studio space. Their tag line is "run by artists for artists" so their heart is definitely in the right place - and it shows. I had a look around a graphic design grad exhibition one night and loved the space. It's huge and the perfect setting for student work. The toilet out the back is a bit dodge, but it kind of adds to its charm. It's easy to get to (walking distance from Central Station) and you even have a post-exhibition drinking spot in The Clare Hotel. Go Chippendale, go!

Wowsa!!!!! What an incredible investment in myself to spend a week celebrating the written word…read more The Sydney Writers Festival brings together a host of incredible authors. The focus is on Australian authors, but also brings in a plethora of international writers. Every single day is jammed full of workshops, talks, and activies to appeal to word sluts. It is a sensory experience to hang with so many other lovers of the written word. In 2013, I had the pleasure of not only attending the workshops in Sydney, but also the preceeding days in the Blue Mountains village of Katoomba. Take my advice and spend the extra time and money to do that. The workshops/lectures were more intimate and gave attendees an opportunity to get up close and personal. In Katoomba, one of the most inspiring events was "Poetry in the Caves." It was hauntingly beautiful. If you love reading, writing, music, poetry......this is a MUST DO!!!

So many great free events this year, and what a place for it. We saw a free event that interviewed screenwriters and producers responsible for converting novels into film. It's definitely in my calendar!

Well now! An old building that's got that wonderful church-y / community hall kind of feel, it lay unused for years because the owners wanted to make sure it was used for performing arts and not, say, a brothel (hi Chippendale!). Then The Chaser lads came along and breathed new life into the place and now it hosts comedy. There's a courtyard with a bar, another bar inside the venue, and you can take drinks to your seats. Now, I'm not about to put the mocker on the place and say it's the perfect comedy club, but.... I can't think of any reasons it's not. Golden.

It advertises itself as Mountbatten Hotel, but that's just the name of the pub downstairs. When you arrive, it's actually named Sydney City Hostels and the entrance is on Ultimo Road. Up two flights of stairs - no elevators - is reception. Staff are friendly and helpful although it would have been nice to have been notified of the $20 refundable key deposit in my email confirmation. I had to leave to get cash out and come back. The rooms are decent with a flat screen telly, mirror, small table and 2 chairs as well as an extension cord so you can plug your phone in for charging while you sit in bed (if you happen to be lucky enough to score a bottom bunk). Fancy, huh! The room, however, smelled like arse and feet, and sweaty men's clothes. Floors were pretty filthy, so I'm not sure how often they get cleaned. Then again as I arrived there was a guy packing to leave after 4 weeks in that room so maybe he made a mess after it was cleaned that day. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt?! There's a locker provided in the rooms for each bed, but it was slightly too small to fit my 40L backpack. Good to keep passports or small valuables like laptops or cameras. There was one toilet and 2 showers near my room, and I was told that there were additional bathroom facilities down the corridor although I never checked them out as the toilet was free whenever I needed it. Bathroom facilities were always clean. It's worth noting that reception is only open during the day (8am-10pm I think) so if you need anything outside of hours, tough luck. The hostel is pretty noisy on a Saturday night, I'm not sure if it was a room in the hostel or a nearby pub but there was loud partying all night long. I managed to sleep through it for the most part but next time I'll remember to bring ear plugs :) Beds could really use with updating... I switched from a much-too-firm top bunk to a way-too-soft bottom bunk (mattresses are obviously never turned!!). I left early the next morning to escape the smell in the room and showered in a friend's nearby hotel room (wasting the $2 I paid for towel hire!) so I can't comment on the showers or free breakfast. Location is great, 2 minutes from Central Station, easy walk to China Town, Paddy's Markets, Darling Harbour and Pitt Street Mall. There are tons of great restaurants in the area and getting here by public transport is really simple. Would I stay here again? Sure, but next time I'll book ahead so I can get a female only dorm.
