We called at The Senate for breakfast and I was very pleased to see something unfamiliar to me, namely the sauté potato breakfast, on the menu. It was very enjoyable, though I wish that there had been pepper mills full of black pepper on coarse grind on the tables. That would have really made it as I would have dosed quite liberally on the stuff. Sitting al fresco provided a wonderful view for the holiday snaps and the service was excellent. Those teapots were impressively heavy - presumably of cast iron. I initially thought that mine had stuck to the table but it was the weight!

Sadly the town is not known for its gastronomy, but if food like this can be produced they should be shouting from the rafters. We are not taking cordon bleu, but honest to goodness well prepared meals, a thoughtful (albeit restricted) menu and a second daily menu that changes throughout the week. I can highly recommend the Home made smoked haddock & spring onion fishcake, it took a few minutes to arrive but was well worth the wait. If there was any criticism to be made, it is that there seems to be a focus on (lets call it) less than healthy food, i.e. burgers etc. although I'm sure this is down to demand. I chose a red wine from Cont Zecci, which I was VERY glad to see on the list. The ingredients are local, the menu is seasonal and the daily specials are well considered, fresh and all-round delightful. Though I don't drink, I understand the gin (and tonic) selection to be incredible. Whilst definitely not the cheapest place to eat locally, it is more than reasonable with the fresh, local ingredients and the skill obviously put into making them. Most recently I visited and between three of us sampled (read: devoured) some cod cheek tempura, scallops with an avocado purée, sesame tempura prawns, fish & chips and a double-serving of seafood chowder. These were mainly daily specials and so I had requested earlier in the day that they didn't run out of chowder for me. It honestly is the best thing ever. Saying that - as much as I adore chowder - the cod cheeks are amongst the best dishes I have ever tasted. The food is seasoned perfectly.
