One of my favorite "traditional" pubs in London- but it's rather hard to find I have to warn! It's tucked away behind Tottenham Court Road, on Gresse St which usually isn't even labeled on any map. After stumbling upon it years ago, I kept going back- the drinks are really cheap, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy and "traditional". Sitting on the top floor of this quiet pub, I couldn't help but think I was in somebody's sitting room, rather than a pub! I once came down to this quaint-looking pub on a quiet afternoon and enjoyed the experience. Located just behind Oxford Street and Totenham Court Road, it is ideal to come here to escape the hectic roads. The top floor is very cozy and you are able to spy into the streets or the nearby offices by sitting on the window sill seats. The beer is very affordable (not surprising, as it is also part of the Samuel Smith crew) and they also sell a tasty cherry beer. The pub is tucked away from the busy roads and thus does not seem to get too busy, but then again, I have never been here on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

The Bricklayers Arms is a Sam Smith's pub by the end of Charlotte Street where it meets Oxford Street. The bar has two floors with a bar on both. The ground floor is divided into two slightly pokey rooms with a dart board at the back. The top floor has sofas and fireplace and is definitely the place to sit. It is a decent pub with good cheap beer and pleasant staff. The upstairs is comfortable and a good place to relax, avoid the rush or escape the weather. However, it can get pretty squashed inside and it seems a little lacking in atmosphere. read more

A cute little find just behind Tottenham Court Road. We were looking for a pub to have a quick drink and a warm-up from the freezing evening before heading to the 100 Club on Oxford Street and out of the selection of pubs down this little street we opted for the tucked away Bricklayers Arms. It's bigger than it first appears and is set on two levels with plenty of seating. They had lots of ales and ciders on tap that looked tempting but I opted for a very cold glass of white wine. It was pretty busy for a cold Wednesday evening and appeared to have attracted quite an after-work crowd as well as some touristy types, yet we found a little seat at the top of the stairs to perch on. There was just something very cosy and friendly about this pub and I loved the old framed photos on the walls. We agreed it's somewhere we'd like to return, perhaps for a post-dinner nightcap in the future. Nice one The Bricklayers Arms - you'll be seeing me and the mister again soon! read more

I probably would struggle to give a Sam Smith's pub less than 4 stars no matter what the venue, but the Bricklayer's Arms is totally deserving. Minutes away from Tottenham Court Road, it's one of the few value for money bars around. The bar staff are nice and happy. So are the merry clientele. Sure you can't order something fancy, but the beers are great, and you'll grow to love the look of surprise on a punter's face when they get change from a tenner. Head upstairs, bag yourself a chair, and let the working week wash away. read more

It's great little quintessential British pub hidden behind Tottenham Court Rd. Upstairs you feel like you've walked into your Grandma's sitting room (in a good way!), with plenty of lounges, a fireplace and a bar. This is a great little hidden gem of a bar tucked away behind Oxford Street, quite close to Tottenham Court Road. Upstairs is beautifully decorated in an old fashioned theme which I love. Tons of comfy sofas, fireplace and the atmosphere is cosy and relaxed. They have a good selection of ales for those beer drinkers out there. It does get pretty busy in the evenings so it can be hard to find a seat so I would recommend going there early. read more

Very cool hard-to find traditional British pub hidden somewhere between Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road. We ended Up spending our time here on the second floor which turned out to be a laid back lounge area with comfortable leather couches and an interesting vibe. Was pretty quiet when we fancied on the venue, my colleague Mark S. Ended up playing DJ with his iPhone and made the room much more lively. If you see this place from the outside, it lures you in with it's appearance - would love to see what's it's like on a Friday or Saturday night. Its somewhat of an independent pub and not controlled by the big Weatherspoons and such, and thus they offer very local and obscure brews which is refreshing in today's world that is dominated by Heineken, Carlsberg, and the likes. Very cosy place, nice large sofas upstairs, and quite reasonable prices. read more

A picturesque building just a few minutes away from Tottenham Court Road. Downstairs I was not quite sure whether it is my place, but sitting down on a sofa upstairs I felt like at home. And no: I don't own a pub. We were there with a group of about 15 students and had great fun to talk and to have a beer. Very relaxing place I would return to! read more

I'm not the world's biggest Sam Smith's fan because I like my wine...but I do have a soft spot for this beer bolthole in Fitzrovia. Often used for group meet-ups, this is a brilliant place to hire out for larger parties, and I've had at least three of my birthday do's at this pub. Upstairs is the place to be particularly if you are with a larger group, and the best time of year to visit is winter when the fire starts roaring. Great if you like pubs that are a little bit like someone's living room. read more

I was making my way to Charlotte Street for dinner, and noticed a charming-looking pub tucked away on a side street. My husband and I decided to wander in for a drink and some nibbles. The ground floor bar was quite small, and in dire need of a refresh. The bartender directed us upstairs, which was a larger and more recently (okay, circa 1990s) refurbished. This was around 6 PM on a Saturday, and the clientele appeared to be mostly students. The upstairs area had sofas and tables, and generally looked cozy if just a little bit shabby. The bartender was friendly, although the wine list left something to be desired. This is definitely more of a beer and ale sort of place. We ordered some chips, which were greasy and undercooked. Then, the busboy swooped through and cleared our wineglasses before we had emptied them. Major faux pas there. In summary, I wouldn't go back. It's an OK neighborhood hangout with inexpensive beer, but not my kind of place. read more

We ended up here while looking for food. They weren't serving food at the time, so we comforted ourselves with some beer and cider. The other reviews lead me to believe that this place can suck sometimes, but we had a pleasant experience. We were drinking pretty early in the day, though. I love Sam Smiths as a matter of course, and this one is adorable. I know how these places can get crowded, though, and it's not laid out well for a large group. Beautiful pub that stays true to its name, with lots of wall hangings on the art and craft of bricklaying. Before 6 the bartender on duty wasn't very helpful -- couldn't even make tea -- and the upstairs wasn't open. After 6, go find a nice couch upstairs; until it gets crowded, it's got to be one of the quietest pubs in London. Blissful to have no background music for when you want to talk to the people you're with without losing your voice. Food was well priced though not so well seasoned. read more

I love Sammy Smith's pubs because whilst they don't ever play music and the décor is very 'old man's pub' it's only ever £2 a pint! The pints on offer are their own brand, and apart from the cider, I prefer them to many of the standard boring selections available in a lot of pubs. The Alpine lager is especially potent! This particular pub is quite small downstairs and not necessarily the friendliest come kicking out time. However, it does have the distinct advantage of being relatively unknown (until now!) and off the beaten track, and therefore unlike other Samuel Smiths pubs - like the one round the corner on Charlotte street - doesn't get ridiculously busy. A bit of an end-of-the-month pub really. read more

Great pub, beer is priced really cheap and the quality is second to none. On a Friday night in late summer there cannot be many better places to be after a hard week. There are not many pubs which are still so uniquely full of character and represent such good value for money. Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter went down a treat. If you are feeling adventerous try the bottled Sam Smiths Old Brewery Pale Ale. Its more expensive than the draft but it's lovely. Another Sam Smith pub right around the corner from the Fitzroy Tavern. I probably prefer the Fitzroy, but can't really think of why, perhaps it lacks some character? In any case this place is a good alternative when the Fitzroy gets too crowded, or if you just want somewhere more quiet. This pub is part of a vast chain of establishments known as Sam Smith Pubs , which are scattered throughout central London. They provide traditional local ales brewed in and around London as well as other tradional and slightly unusual ones brewed in other parts of the United Kingdom. These ales are outstanding not only in quality but also in price (especially given the fact that most of these pubs are centrally based). The Bricklayers Arms itself is located at the end of Charlotte Street tucked away in a little alcove opposite the Post Office building, although it can be a little tricky to find it is well worth persevering as it is a charming, quiant little find that has the true essence of old London about it. The furnishings represent the local history and the pictures etc are fascinating. The ale is suberb and as fore mentioned unusual (take for example cherry beeras a female i really appreciated this one!) the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. I went here with friends and was very disappointed. Firstly we saw the barmaid serve a customer dregs from the drip tray. When it came to our round we were served very flat tasteless pints of Pure Brew, we tried to bring these back and change them for something else but the barmaid refused, not what I expected. I don't think I've ever feel the need to bring a beer back but this was terrible. Please don't waste your time and money at this place, there's much better pubs nearby. read more

A Gem. In the 1930's used to be referred to by the bohemian clientele as 'The Burglars Rest'. At some point, burglars had broken in and then stayed the night. The evidence of their 'rest' was the number of empty bottles they left behind them. Lovely atmosphere and good inexpensive beer. read more

My husband and visited from Canada in June and had a wonderful time in this pub. The bartender/manager was perfect in her position and kept us entertained. I was even invited to ring the last call bell. To my horror, it was lighter than anticipated thus I woke up the neighborhood. This pub sure was a highlight of my trip to London! read more
