Quaint little bookshop found along a series of shops in Thomasville, Georgia. Didn't expect to see this in the area. Seemed everything around was food or a boutique full of clothes. Nice to see an oasis of literature. Not to mention, too, that they had a book reading listed to occur later that day. They also sell truffles, plus many different trinkets. T-shirts, kitschy socks, even "punny" hand sanitizer. No idea how I walked out without making a purchase. Would return if in the area. read more

Full disclosure - I have never been inside this bookstore. Heck, I have never even been to Georgia. But I listen to the podcast the store does, and I love how it sounds like a discussion of books among friends rather than some highly polished but ultimately boring podcast. On a whim, I ordered one of the books discussed on the podcast because it sounded like a good read for a vacation. The book arrived very quickly - actually a day before the release date! - and was nicely wrapped. I certainly wasn't expected a sweet and personalized note by one of the staff members in the package. Thomasville Chamber of Commerce should give this store a grant. I never ever thought of visiting Georgia for fun before interacting with this store, and now I want to come spend the weekend in Thomasville! read more

This is a great local bookstore with a big selection of books, cards, gifts, and some fun surprises (teepee! truffles! honeycombs!) It is bigger than I thought, the store is designed well, and they have a lot of merchandise. The day I visited they had an author signing and a book art vendor which was very cool. We are raving fans of this book store but live almost four hours a way. We follow the owners podcast, have seen them featured in magazines, etc. Love the touches and feels that make you think of the movie "You've Got Mail." Got to meet the owner which made my day. Everyone working there are book lovers so that is super helpful when needing help selecting a book. Already planning to do a girls trip overnighter with friends to visit this quaint town and awesome bookstore. read more

This bookstore is like something from my dreams. I have been trying to find every excuse under the sun to make the trip from Augusta and found one last Saturday when they had an event with Anne Bogel. It's so neat stepping into a place that you've heard about SO often from listening to the podcast. Annie is as pleasant in person as I imagined and I have been bragging about this bookstore since I came back to town to anyone who will listen. I could peruse all day and really wish I had given myself more time before the event to really explore. It's a perfect place to stop for gifts (that are not just books), try a truffle, sit in the tent in the kid's area to indulge in a book.... the list goes on. I loved the shelf ends and had to contain myself and only bought two books (this time) and a shelf subscription when I got home for a friend. This store reminds me why reading people are my favorite kind of people. It may be a long time before I make the trip back, but it will happen! read more

I am so in love with this place. It is literally my favorite place in Thomasville. I could spend hours in this book shop if I could. It has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I wish I could buy the whole shop with all those great book selections! It's a tad bit expensive as books usually are but worth it nonetheless. My one regret is I didn't purchase one of their super cute $4 posters. I will definitely be coming here the next time in T-ville. read more

I always make a point to stop here whenever I'm in or passing through Thomasville. The interior is gorgeous. Whoever is in charge of organization and decoration does a wonderful job. The Bookshelf has way more than just books; they also have magazines, gifty items, puzzles, kid toys, etc. They also will gift wrap your purchase! After buying a book off the website, my credit card was charged twice- by both the computer and then manually charged by the owner. An honest mistake most likely that I had hoped had been resolved after emailing the owner. However, when viewing my bank statement, I noticed that the owner had conveniently tacked on a little extra over the total cost and shipping of my book. After emailing her again with my original receipt, I got no response. I was then forced call Wells Fargo and provided proof of the original credit card authorization price. They quickly refunded the amount that I was overcharged, no thanks to the owner. Buyer beware! read more

Where do I start with this fantastic place? I'll start as you first walk in the door. The sweet smell of fresh candles, new books and magazines greet you. Instantly you feel both relaxed and inspired. The huge windows at the front entrance with the sun cast buttery hue on the entire store--a rainy day, a warming shade of gray. Look to your left, you'll see a seating area with a wall of magazines. To your right, the beginning of clever displays of themed tables that you'll notice throughout the store. Along side the shelves of books from local history and cookbooks to self-help and fiction, there are fun book themed t-shirts ("I like big books and I cannot lie.") and Thomas University (the local liberal arts U) drinking cups. The middle of the store hosts a huge table for one or more of their weekly events like book signings or a kid's birthday party. This is also where things change up a bit by tossing a sweets counter, a corner for cards and a little coffee station. Moving on to the back of the store you'll be in the huge children's literature and learning section where on Saturday mornings at 11am the tots are entertained by a mesmorizing book reading. The Bookshelf is my go-to place when I have a quiet moment in downtown Thomasville or where I go to get a neat and thoughtful gift for a friend as they also carry Hershel backpacks for your book carrying needs. I absolutely adore this cozy, little bookstore. Before you even walk through the door, the lovely window displays creatively, and during the holidays, festively beckon you with new books and one-of-a-kind gifts. As the sunlight streams through the front windows, the shelves filled with specially curated titles glow with the care that has gone into their selection and display. Literary-themed jewelry and candles are set up throughout the stores as are local vendors' various trinkets--all of which make finding a birthday present or a just-because gift a breeze. But what I love most about this shop--as is true of many independent bookstores--is the staff's knowledge as to their collection of books. Anytime I have I asked myself the question all readers routinely ask, "What should I read next?" I know I can count on a Bookshelf employee to point me in the direction of just the right book I need at just the right time, whether it be a non-fiction account of racial injustice in America or a contemporary retelling of a Jane Austen classic. I can never walk into this store and not walk out with a new title--an ever-growing pile of To-Be-Reads on my nightstand table notwithstanding. I find myself happily making the drive to Thomasville just to visit The Bookshelf. Annie and her staff have managed to create what is often lost or overlooked in today's world of Amazon and e-readers: a reader's oasis where the experience of finding your next literary adventure is just as important as books themselves. read more

This place is adorable. I love the charm of the historic building, and the employees are like long-lost friends, they're so friendly. : ) My kids and I spent quite a while just relaxing and hanging out. They have a play area with color books for little kids, and places to sit and read. Although we didn't end up buying any books, I found some cute vintage-style wall art for my son's room. read more

I love this very attractive bookstore! I feel as if I am free to take my time in selecting my purchases. The collection of books is varied and interesting so it is not hard to find something for everyone. I also love the fact that they have books by local writers. I am saddened by the fact that so many of our quaint bookstores are being replaced by things like Amazon. We need to support and encourage our local merchants like Bookshelf. read more
