Such a great bookstore! I'm not from the area but came to town because the bookstore hosted a book discussion with an author I like. It was a great, small and well organized event. Gio (who I think may be the owner or manager) was amazing with communication when I reached out with a question about the event. The store is clean, organized and has a large selection of books. Well-curated selection, ample parking, nice place. They had a really eclectic cookbook section and a great array of books on local history. A lot of mainstream fiction authors/books were missing from their fiction selection, which was odd because it is so big! Checkout took awhile. As someone who grew up in the Berkshires, the Bookloft is one of my all-time favorite places. I was worried years ago when it moved locations that it would lose some of its luster, but it has only gotten better. The selection of books is thoughtful, diverse, and inclusive, which takes time and attention to cultivate. I love this little haven, and I look forward to going every time I'm visiting home. I really love this book store. The staff are very helpful. We just placed an order for some books and they got them to us quickly.

Rude associate! I was there the end of last week and the lady, possibly Jade was not willing to give much help. At checkout to pay and order books I couldn't find totally felt like we were bothering her. Rudeness and unhelpful are not what we needed. What we needed was genuine help and not feeling like we were putting a bookseller out. Today while I was waiting in line she snapped at whom I suspect was a colleague. I have unfortunately told friends probably not a place to go. Sad one associate ruins the entire feel of The Bookloft. read more

I've visited this book store a few times a year since it opened many many years ago. I wish I could say that it became a warm and familiar spot but it never did. The staff don't recognize you from one visit to the next because they take no time to pay attention to you. For years they had their biography section alphabetical by author--whoever heard of that! But of course, when I politely asked, they knew best. Very condescending. The only good part? You can find some used paperbacks at half price. Instead, support Shaker Mill Books in West Stockbridge, or Yellow House Books in Great Barrington. Two years later. I wanted to buy a paperback of Hemingway for a student I tutor--any Hemingway. Nope. No such thing. This led me to browse for other classics. You will not find them here. They have one narrow obscure shelf--away from the fiction area--with a smattering of pretty editions of some 19th century titles, e.g., Middlemarch. Pretty to hold. Impossible to read owing to the tiny print. Can someone explain why people love this store? Maybe they've never been to a truly glorious bookstore. They don't know what they're missing. read more

It was a pleasant surprise to find this gem in the middle of a strip mall. It has quite the variety, and any place that puts a lot of focus on indie stuff gets bonus points from me, as it's always important to think - and read - out of the box. Their website features equally interesting recommendations. The magazine selection is somewhat small, but again, you see variety. This is a great place to bring your kids to let them develop a joy of reading. read more

Love this bookstore. They have just about everything, including a stellar selection of books about the area, with a strong collection about the Appalachian Trail. (You see through hikers here all the time.) Fantastic kids area. I love the selection of used books that is located in the back of the store. You can find some very collectable books at very good prices here, so don't overlook it. The location is easy for parking but dreadful otherwise. Wish you could just stroll over, but it necessitates a drive. It's an independent book store. Go in and wander around. Leave with a good book, support your neighbors and learn something new. Rudest salesperson I have ever met since I moved up here 6 months ago. I asked for a book as could not find it on shelf. She looked on shelf first where I was already looking. I said its ok don't go crazy looking for it. She raised her voice and said. Just give me a minute! With a nasty look on her face. I was taken aback. She went in back and found the book. No way was I going to purchase a $30 book after her response. You lost a sale. Sept 18 2019. Won't be going back. read more

Great place for getting kids books. Many of the non-fiction staff selections tend to lean towards liberal viewpoint. Hard to read the staff reviews of current books (handwritten). Very pricey (nothing off list price, who pays list price??). Better to order from an on-line bookstore. Despite 3 staff members (very small space) no one asked if I needed any help. read more

Just got off the phone and they're mailing us the two books left on our list. My wife has retired as book seller at an independent store. We live mostly in New Haven, CT, (think Yale book store) but spend some part of the year near Great Barrington. The Book Loft is now our go-to store. Helpful smart staff and a great selection make it a natural. read more

This is an amazing bookstore. If you know what you want, they point you in the right direction or order it for you. If you don't know what you want, they are tour guides for the route you need to take to find that perfect novel. Friendly staff with great knowledge of their inventory. Good selection of books. Not Barnes and Noble. Just a SMALL local bookstore with regional flavor. No cafe, because this is a bookstore. No toy area, because this is a bookstore. No tables and chairs, because this is not a library. So you won't find a signed copy of Sarah Palin's hardcover edition of whatever-it-was. The staff is liberal, but you'll only find out by trying to engage them in a debate (it's a bookstore, though). I love the Bookloft more because of what it's not than what it is. I grew up in the 70s and 80s when bookstores sold... well, sold books! Not coffee and DVDs and board games! There's nothing wrong with that, but that's not really a bookstore. read more

Amazing selection of books (there really is something for everyone- and if they don't have it on the shelves or in their back room inventory they'll order it for you and it only takes OVERNIGHT to get it, free- better than Amazon!- and you can also purchase books online), friendly staff who are always happy to give recommendations or general help when asked (the Staff Picks shelves are always worth a look), and just a great environment overall, with armchairs scattered throughout. They sell only new books, so most stuff is regular price, but there are options often between cheaper mass market paperback and prettier editions, plus a great selection of half price (though still new) books!! Also a cool little variety of products by local businesses (home-made jam, fresh eggs, local artist postcards...). Also they'll find rare and out of print books for you, just ask. The only possible turn-off is that it's not right in town, but, come to think of it, the plaza in which it's located has a dollar store, grocery store, department store, nail salon, and cafes and restaurants across the street, plus lots of free parking, unlike in town. So, overall definitely worth the five minute ride out of town (which is technically bike-able and walkable too, with sidewalks running all the way there from Main Street). read more
