There is one, thriving in Malone in northern Jackson County. Like most older people, my wife and I usually eat our big meal of the day between 1 and 3 p.m. After I noticed that Southern Roots was now open on Saturdays for lunch, we had to try it. We were not disappointed. I had the filet and she had the fried steak. They were nothing short of excellent and actually, quite amazing. Only the best of ingredients were obviously used for both of our meals, and the place was more than half full at 1 p.m. on a Saturday. We talked with the owner after our meal, telling her how much we enjoyed our meals. It was readily apparent she loved cooking and that a lotta love is put into her meals. She told us she was thinking of opening on Sundays and I remarked, "Surely you need at least one day of rest!". She answered, "My husband is a farmer and works all the time, so I do too." Southern Roots is definitely one of the best kept secrets in Jackson County and you can be sure of one thing, we will be making the 26 mile round trip from Marianna to Malone a lot in the future. Count on us as regulars. I given hundreds of reviews and do not give five star reviews very often, but Southern Roots definitely deserves one.

Seat yourself, make your selections from the menu on the wall, take your order to the cashier, and a wait person will bring the food to your table. Add fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, fried okra and a glass of ice tea...and maybe even some amazing peach pie for desert ....and you're all set for a nice long nap afterwards. Friendly staff, friendly locals and great food in a type of atmosphere that's sadly fading fast. We shared one of the larger tables with a local family and had very nice lunchtime chat.
