This is a funny part of the world, this Bluemont. It's like a human estuary, where the (you choose which should be which) saltwater people meet the freshwater people, where Civil War history mixes with DC commuters, where the old hands meet the new. To me, it seems as if the culture to the east is having its way with the culture that displaced the native Americans and even though this seems somehow fitting at the same time those living here now are the descendants of the robbers and not the robbers themselves and maybe it isn't so fantastic to have a Prius in every other garage after all but what do I know I'm not from these parts and even though I lived for a spell in Appalachia perhaps this is really none of my business. So please take this preamble with a grain of salt. Take what follows more seriously. This is a very cool General Store. It isn't Clem's store and it has staples that appeal more to the freshwater people than the saltwater people (or vice versa depending on the assignment you selected earlier). But so what that's the way it is. The store and Lani the gracious proprietress and her lovely staff and pulled pork sammich they made from good meat they raised I think and smoked themselves saved my life the day after 20 miles on the AT with no supper followed by a morning with no breakfast or water until like an hour after we started walking all thanks to the most insane thunderstorm I've been caught in for a long time and the flammable aspect of tents and that sucked because we were going to have couscous. We had stashed a two-day ration of food at the post office down the street, about a mile from where the AT crosses the main road. I had spied the store the day we dropped the food and thought hmm that place looks pretty cute I better be feeling hella good when we get this cache because if for some reason I'm not the siren song may play and instead of the last leg on the Trail I could find myself on that picnic table under the shade tree eating bbq and sipping on the sweet root beer. Self-control has historically not been my strongest suit. I was not feeling hella good when we arrived in Bluemont. The 55 miles had taken their toll. That no supper no breakfast thing sapped my will. The bbq was the last nail in the pine box into which my desire to slog on had slipped maybe for a short nap but go ahead and fasten that lid I don't really care at this point. We set for a long spell. One of Lani's associates was so sweet to drive us back to Harper's Ferry and the car and we headed back a day early which was all good because the rest of the family was there and we have really only so many days and it's nice to be home too. If you're hiking the AT, biking the byways, doing a little historic tour of the robber's plunder, even if you're driving your Pious to a government job in Foggy Bottom and need a little egg sammy and the coffee to keep you company on the way - the Bluemont General Store I daresay is the place for you. Adorable little place that is out of the southern version of Gilmore Girls, except the shopowner is a woman and the regulars are all men! Excellent eggs! Great source for milk! Delivered the old fashioned way in glass bottles, no less! Key Lime Pie was great, egg sandwich was decent but the lettuce was soft. For some reason south of the Mason-Dixon lettuce goes from crispy to membrane-like rather quickly :( Oh well, will return if I'm ever passing through again! read more

Living in a big city like D.C., a "general store" sign gets me every time. After visiting nearby Great Country Farms, my little family stopped by Bluemont General Store. Although it has general store vibes, think of it as more or a corner store with essential goods like soap, spicy sauce, and mac and cheese boxes. This is a quaint little general store right in the middle of the small town of Bluemont, Virginia. We stopped by the electric car charging station in Bluemont before driving up the hill to Dirt Farm Brewery. We decided to stop into the general store for an ice cream while we waited for the car to charge. The clerk was very friendly and the ice cream was delicious. We also browsed their selection of local honey and jams while we waited. We chatted with a couple of friendly locals who were out enjoying the nice weather. From what I read here on Yelp I expected more, but it was not a bad stop as we were driving by and decided to explore. It's an old-school type of general store. Quaint and a bit charming, with a nice little porch to sit on and enjoy a cold soda-pop or ice cream cone. A lot of the items on the shelves were things you can find in your local grocery store or bodega, but there was also a nice mix of local jams, jellies, honey, other items and nick-knacks. Two and a half stars. Stopped by for light refreshments and pain relief between the hiking incident and farm trip. Life this far from the real world marches to a pretty different standard. Realistically this bare essentials store is probably hot shizz for the locals, but I'm quite aware I've been spoiled by decades of chain grocery store inventories. Kudos for neat business cards etched into doubled balsa wood, and the limited patio and picnic table seating. The sweet green bean crisps appeared on their shelves early summer, with a small sampling tray by the register to entice the uninitiated. Different sized goody packages to please any basic moderation level a glutton cares to choose. Rock candy, pickle flavored Pringles, tasty treats left and right. Glass bottle sodas taste like sweet throwbacks with a twist: vanilla cream soda, orange cream soda, cherry cola, even root beer. No ibuprofen but I claimed the lonely box of Bayer. Their eggs were a hot commodity, and gallon buckets of local ice cream. Parking is limited to the few spots beside and the two parallel parking allowances just before the intersection across the street. Thank goodness they take credit cards. read more

I stopped by the Bluemont General Store for the first time today on my birthday. I was absolutely disgusted by the fact that 5 innocent chickens was caged in a very small dog cage inside the store. The small cage was obviously designed for a small dog. My husband and I could tell that 5 chickens really want to get out of the cage. They look very suffering, uncomfortable, and hungry. They can't even move because the cage is too small. I felt traumatized as a customer and I won't come back again. I do not support animal cruelty at any kind. I urge the owner of this business to immediate remove those 5 chickens and place them in a proper chicken coop cage. It's not okay to make animals suffer at all. read more

Hard to get groceries out in remote places like bluemont sometimes but this place helps. They also had yummy pies and homemade cookies for cheap. I really liked the sugar cookies. We also picked up some local bacon and local eggs. The owner of the shop actually sells her chickens eggs. Will be back when in the area. read more

This is a nice little place to stop if you're out on Snickersville Turnpike or even Rt 7 (although it is a mile or so off Rt 7). It is an old-school general store, with everything from coffee to fresh cookies to soda to home-made sandwiches. The cookies were good, the egg salad sandwich was quite good, and the cinnamon bread was absolutely delicious. All in all a nice place to stop for a quick break if you're in the area. read more

This quaint little general store is the BEST!!! ALL of the clerks are wonderful and so friendly. They have a homemade soup each day as well as chili which is incredible. In addition to that, they usually have beef stew which is also very hearty and delicious. They have a pretty good selection of things in the store and their baked goods are truly amazing. This general store caught our eye on the way to peach picking and we new we had to stop in on the way back. We chose some sandwiches and chips and ate outside on the patio and then finished up with some ice cream. Everyone was so friendly and there was lots of hidden gems throughout the store. I stopped here with my 3 kids after a long day at Great Country Farms because they wanted ice cream. It was pretty good, and inexpensive...only $2 for a good size cup. The rest of the store was just ok, not as nice as I remember when I was a kid, but it would be worth coming back for the cheap ice cream. read more

I'm not at all sure what the previous reviewer was talking about. This place is adorable, and spotless, and seemed to me to be stocked with both necessities and treats. Bluemont General Store is the best! The staff are family and you become part of this warm and welcoming family. The items they carry are perfect for that "oh, i forgot at the store and i need..." moments. And while you are there, check out the whoopie pies! OMG!!! I purchased almost two dozen for a memorial for my Dad. He would have loved this store and been there everyday for a cup of coffee (and a whoopie pie!). Stop by for a chat with the locals - become a regular and enjoy the chickens that walk around the street. Where else can you go for a ice cream cone, and walk away with 6 little peepers for your next flock? I love this store and can't say enough about it! And by the way, those whoopie pies i bought?
