Pretty much every one of the nine rooms is a suite of some kind--we ended up in the Prince Rohan Suite on the ground floor, full of dark-wood paneling, mahogany wardrobes and a real, key-driven safe hidden behind the mirror. We loved lounging in the parlour next door, chatting to the nine other guests, with tables set up for letter-writing or a quick rubber of Whist. Your hosts are exceptionally accommodating and will extend you every courtesy. But the real reason you should stay here is the restaurant. The Lutter & Wegner wine merchants from Berlin run it, and the food is exquisite without being pretentious. Needless to say, the wine list is top notch. Dine on the terrace overlooking the rapids if you can. And I must say, the prices for both room and food were surprisingly modest, for the quality of both. Bad Gastein is a fascinating town, too. Many of the grand buildings are being renovated, while others have fallen on hard times. With the ghosts of Schumann, Grillparzer and Otto von Bismarck stalking about, it comes across as a little Victorian-style creepy, in an amusing way. Heartily recommended.

You pay for tap water (and you pay for bread), both of which the staff will gladly and repeatedly offer you without mentioning that they charge €5 to fill a glass bottle from the kitchen faucet. It took 90 minutes to get us from appetizers to entrees, and nearly four hours in total to get us through the entire meal from sit-down to pay-the-check. No exaggeration, there, and not a word of apology or explanation from the staff the whole while. CON: Service was delivered with surprisingly rudely (and I say that as a native Austrian), and our server turned stone cold when we asked whether we could accelerate the dessert course after 3+ hours at table by that point. The waitstaff was nice but nothing to special. Although they are pretty genius at selling you stuff you don't really want and then charge you for it. They give you a bottle of water at the beginning but you'd have to pay if you drink it. They ask you if you want some bread and housemade spread as a starter and then charge you. It's just not complementary even if it sounds like it is.
