I've been a long time fan of Black Sheep, so when I had the chance to visit where it all started, I jumped at the chance.
We arrived late on a Sunday, just in time for the last tour, and even though there was already a large group booked in, they still had space - it's probably a good idea to book though if you want to make sure that you get in.
The brewery itself was a really interesting place - the tour doesn't go into loads of detail about the brewing process, but gives you a pretty good idea about the way it all works. You also get introduced to how different malts and hops affect the final beer - 'raw' hops smell exactly as fantastic as you'd imagine, especially if you're a fan of IPAs.
After the tour you get two thirds of a pint per person to use at the bar for tasters, and if you fancy a session you can go for a full pint, or one of the bottled beers.
If you're in a rush (but why would you be?) or want to pick up something to take home with you, the gift shop sells all the bottled beers, and a pretty astounding selection of Black Sheep merchandise.
If you find yourself in the area, make this a stop along the way, you won't be disappointed.
P.S. There's a pretty good looking café/restaurant too, but it was closed by the time our tour finished, so didn't get a chance to try anything. read more
