A decent pint, cracking beer garden and the added bonus of having an Indian restaurant on the premises

The pub is split in two halfs, a cosy bar area with bench seating, tables and a nice open fire. The other half is a large restaurant area but it also benefits from a bar area with fire and informal seating. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and being with a small child we gave the main bar a miss and decided to sit in the restaurant area. Although it was empty it had a good feel with the fire roaring. The pub is a popular destination and quickly filled creating a good atmosphere. The specials board sounded appetising so we decided to stay for food which is served from 6pm. The restaurant was fully booked but they squeezed us in at 6.30, it still wasn't full however when we left at 8. I started with a black pudding hot pot followed by pork belly with mash and even more black pudding. Both were spot on, the pork belly was especially good, moist and just the right amount of crunch on the crackling. Others had the t bone steak which was huge and perfectly cooked and also the steak pie. One gripe, order off the normal menu and you get frozen chips, on the special you get hand cut! Overall high quality and well cooked restaurant quality food. Highly recommended for a drink and especially food.

Our party of four was each provided with two tiny roast potatoes that appeared to have been cooked from frozen as they were powdery in the middle, plus one reasonable yorkshire pudding. A moderate selection and quantity of vegetables were provided: cabbage, carrots and mashed potato. The White Bear now provides complimentary bottles of table water which seems to be fashionable in some pubs at the moment. A nice touch, but the bottle put on our table looked like it needed a good scrub in hot soapy water. A nice building and atmosphere that seems to be popular with the locals, but I personally would not hurry back based on today. Overall, for the price we all felt the offering was lacking.

Relax here, the staff is ready to make this luxury even better with whatever you need! Directions to many local hikes or hot coffee on the picnic tables. So much fun to have, there are gardens, strolls, patios and quiet libraries too. This is the most beautiful place I've ever stayed because I can get some rest, unwind and enjoy the great outdoors. Yesterday there was a local marathon- yes!- great runners charged past into the local town of Ambleside. Hikers and dog lovers are here too. National parks close by... what a get-away we are having!!

Brunch, lunch, dinner, and bar snacks are served at the Drunken Duck, and I'd only really recommend booking for dinner. The beer and cider are mostly local I believe. We did the curry bowl to share (vegetarian and VERY tasty - kind of wish I could get the recipe), scampi, fries, and tartare sauce (those fries are to die for!) and the lamb kofta, hummus, flatbread, and mint yoghurt (great for sharing and noshing). There's plenty of parking on the side of the inn. The inside is decorated beautifully (very insta-worthy), so maybe consider renting out for an event. And yes, you can bring your dog to dinner/drinks.

They also have a restaurant menu and a bar menu. I'm not sure if you're actually limited on where in the pub you can eat this, but I think it's nice when places have a pub grub menu and a bistro-style one, if they have a kitchen that can cope with it. I shared the seafood platter to start, which was really delicious. It had crayfish cocktail, mackerel pate, smoked salmon and langoustines. Plus bread of course. The friend I shared with and I both really rated this. Then to continue the fishy theme I had seabass fillet with garlic new potatoes, braised fennel, peas and lemon butter. So many delicious flavours in one dish, and the potatoes and fish were cooked perfectly. To finish I had the dark chocolate torte with Chantilly cream. This is a very rich dessert, but thankfully not too sweet. I struggled to finish it all, however with a glass of port on the side I just about managed it. I also shared a bottle of house white which was nice, perfectly drinkable and went well with my fish choices. Overall I'd definitely recommend if you're in the area.

I'm a vegetarian and so often feel like an 'afterthought' in pubs, with barely more than a vegetable or goat's cheese tart on offer. The Wellington Heifer veggie menu is wider and more creative. Definitely a favourite eating place for me.
