This is a lovely, historic old 15th-century inn and coaching house which serves as the central pub for the local Chiltern Brewery. We last went there on our last visit in January 2025 (I'm really behind on doing reviews lately and am just trying to get in a few key older ones from the last few months) There are two parts, the Farmer's Bar, which is the main pub area and which includes outdoor seating in the lovely enclosed courtyard, and the historic, wood-paneled Great Hall. This last time, we ate in the Great Hall. Ambience is great, with lots of character and a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere. Food is outstanding. On Sunday, we always get the roast beef with veg and Yorkshire pudding, and it is always perfect, consistently one of the best we have ever had. The cask ale is outstanding, especially the 300's Old Ale and Beechwood Bitter. Service is always excellent.

The staff are always polite, smart dressed and great to have a chat too in the evening. I have yet to eat there, apart from the wonderful selection of crisps and nuts of course, but I have heard the food is excellent. My favorite feature of the pub has to be the courtyard area fully fitted with outdoor seating, tables and a sheltered walkway to the excellent toilets. Being isolated from the town centre, yet still incredibly close, it's amazing how quiet and relaxing it is to have a drink. When you're next near stop in and I promise you'll have a wonderful time.

On arrival, after finding our table we sat in a tight corner next to the bar not really suitable for a table for 6 and waited for our server. We sat & we sat....after 15 minutes we were yet to order a drink let alone our meals. After 50 minutes our meals arrived and although the meals were ok in regards to taste, they were all only luke warm at best. We were offered the desert menu and all ordered the recommended one on the menu, I'm afraid it was bland and yet another disappointment. Our spoons were delivered by the server, all held by their heads in her hands. The pub itself is cosy and had a lovely log burner but I'm afraid the service and food were a real disappointment. The food has a real chance of being so much better if only served hot and accompanied by a much better service experience.

It is a listed building with a museum attached which I shamefully have not visited yet. The pub itself is a lovely place to stop for coffee, lunch or just a quick drink in the day. The staff are okay although some can seem quite moody sometimes but never rude. The place is really quite large with quite a few different rooms. What initially attracted me was the title. As a child, growing up in the Salisbury area (I won't…read morename the specific village because I still have family living there and I'd hate for them to suffer any reprisals for what I'm about to say.), I often attended a pub called the two bells and although it pains me to say it, it must be said; it was sub-par. Then a curious thing happened... as a Young adult, out in the world, leaving home for the bright lights of London, I discovered my new local was called the 5 bells. Reluctant as I was to visit a pub with Bells in its name, a combination of peer pressure and my own fervent clinging to the idea that you should not judge a book by its cover, I was convinced to attend. I must say I was glad I did because although the 5 bells was by no means excellent, it was significantly better than the pub of my childhood. "What if" I wondered to myself "the more the bells, the better the pub" it was a fleeting thought but one that was reignited when I discovered that there was an 8 bells! I must see it. Now the 8 bells is by no means local to me. In fact it is not inconsiderably far (an hour or more by car and 3 at least by public transport). But it was worth the trip. I ate well, I drank well and most satisfyingly of all I continued to prove my hypothesis that the more Bells in the pub title, the more enjoyable the experience. Please someone tell me if they ever discover a 10 bells! ‍
