Going to the Beach House is kind of like visiting your grandparents (or parents, as the case may be). The house is cozy and the hosts are warm and inviting. The accommodations truly feel like visiting the grandparents' place, too - the rooms are in the lower level of the house, with a slight basement feel to it, but with a great entrance to the back yard that has chairs to sit and look at the bay (we even saw some seals). Unfortunately, the mosquitos can be a buzz kill to that serenity, so bring along some bug block, and pack in a bottle of wine or a few beers to sit and enjoy the view. The walls are a bit thin, but with only two rooms, the place doesn't get too rowdy.
Breakfast was pleasant, and our hosts sat with us while we ate, which was nice to chat and learn more about the area. They are both born and raised natives of the area, and know the area quite well.
This place is a great alternative to staying in St. John's, as it's only an hour away and in the direction of the border, if that's the way you need to be going. It only takes a few hours to get from here to Bangor, so it was a perfect place to stay after our ferry ride from Nova Scotia to break up the distance and time of traveling, and to avoid both Bangor and Saint John's for a more fresh-air stay for the night. However, please note that if you take the late afternoon ferry from Digby, you should stop and eat dinner in Saint John before coming this way. There are almost zero options of places to eat in the area. read more
