a trip to maine--obviously, but i need to point out the obvious--and why a trip to maine you ask--a phone conversation with my girlfriend and we figured out that the two of us have never been to maine--other than me but it was a drive from new hampshire to portland to fly out. anyway, there was one light house in particular that she needed to see--and she had it in her phone. and of course it was the west quoddy head lighthouse. so we hopped in the car and drove to lubec all the way from albuquerque which is a long story in itself. i was tasked to find lodging all along the trip, and realized that there was not a lot in lubec. Found the West Quoddy Station, and sure why not give it a try. We were so glad we did. the first thing we noticed is that it was QUIET. peaceful quiet. and was everything as advertised. we had the starboard bouy barn, and it was nice and roomy. having a kitchen meant we could just get something in town and cook in the room. to be able to just have a nice meal and enjoy the scenery was fantastic. the room was nice and warm for may, and the shower was terrific. big bathroom which is a plus. definitely worth the drive!! read more

West Quoddy Station - Vacation Rentals Near Me - Lubec, Maine

This is our second visit to West Quoddy Station in as many months. The first was a drop everything and just go Friday Night getaway in May. Luckily for us, the massive Station House--we surmise the former lifesaving station's dormitory--was available and offered at a not to be refused price. What fun to rattle around its many bedrooms and baths. Most memorable were the sweeping views across the Bay of Fundy north to Lubec and Campobello Island, and that evening's awe-inspiring sunset. You would do well to consider The Station House for family or friend reunion or small business retreats. We enjoyed West Quoddy Station so much that we decided to return for our 42nd wedding anniversary, but only if we could get the Crew's Quarters cabin, its views comparable to The Station House's with even greater privacy. Twice lucky! Given Crew's Quarters unassuming Downeast shingle exterior, we were nearly stunned and very impressed upon entering to discover possibly the most meticulously constructed Post and Beam home in my thirty years selling Downeast real estate. Talk about overbuilt! Every cedar beam heftier, every plank and floor board wider than required, all carefully joined. No place for sheetrock in Crew's Quarters: instead every wall built of wide cedar planks pleasingly laid diagonally. Plus a fully vaulted ceiling with exposed beams. And those views of the blue Bay of Fundy, even bluer skies from bedrooms, living, and dining rooms, and Crew's Quarters spacious deck. We, our friends, and their aging golden service dog, Brigid, were very comfortable. The weather being fine, we spent most of our time relaxing and dining on the deck. Everything worked fine in the shared bathroom, towels were thick. The kitchen wasn't gourmet-worthy, but the toaster took a split bagel and the vintage Mr. Coffee worked. There's a pot for boiling lobster, if you must. Had the weather turned cold--as it can, quickly--we would have been grateful for the propane "woodstove" and large Rinnaii heater. We did way better than survive. We'll be back! P.S. West Quoddy Station is a dozen minutes from the International Bridge to Campobello Island, a few minutes more to the auto and bike ferry to Deer Island, itself worth a day's touring. This is a unique place, and I struggle with the rating because on one hand I can see the thought and care that went into restoring it, and it is privately owned so I tend to give benefit of the doubt to owner, because owning a business is so difficult. This place is located in one of the most beautiful areas in Maine. The grounds and the buildings are gorgeous, as are all of the surroundings. The exterior of the buildings is immaculately maintained and the landscaping is lovely. We stayed in the Cabin. I booked it because of location and the history of the building. The photos showed it was primitive but clean, and I'm fine with primitive, as long as it's clean. Check in process is very old fashioned...you arrive to find your name on a public bulletin board outside the office, and go to your unlocked cabin to find your keys and a printed welcome note with instructions. Obviously this is not an automated process, and a decent amount of effort goes into this process every day. It was actually quaint. The management had sent a very nice email with a long, detailed list of interesting things to do & amazing sights in the area, along with how to access them. This was very thoughtful & helpful! As stated earlier, the location is breathtaking. Several wildflowers were blooming, including lupines, and the sweeping views of the water were just gorgeous. We loved strolling the grounds and got some amazing photos. It truly felt like "real Maine", not some tourist version. When we arrived & got into the cabin, we noticed an odor that went beyond the usual musty old cabin smell. But it was still at the beginning of the season, so I assumed the old cabin had been shut up all winter and just needed to be aired out. It was fairly dark inside even with the curtains open. I was disappointed to see the leather chair that looked comfy in the photos was actually very old and the seat had what looked to be broken springs showing through, so we didn't sit on it. The kitchen appeared clean & very well appointed with everything you'd need to cook your own meals, including a full size fridge, toaster, microwave and a gas range, and every cooking and eating utensil, including a tea kettle. The bathroom appeared clean, with thick towels, a hair dryer, and soaps/shampoo/conditioner. We opened the windows to let the fresh air in, anxious to go exploring the lighthouse and surrounding area. When we returned, the cabin had still not aired out. Upon turning down the beds, we saw there was a lot of pet hair on the bedspread and on the pillowcases and sheets (we were not traveling with animals). Upon turning on the lamps we saw the shades were stained and there were cobwebs and piles of pet hair on the floors and in the corners, and it was at this point that we noticed one of the bath towels didn't look clean. I'd now lost faith, but there is very little in the way of other places to stay in the area & it was already getting late. My husband said "it's only one night" and we were getting up early the next morning anyway, so we quickly ran to the local Dollar General just before they closed and bought our own blankets and towels. We made the best of it, getting up at 4am (the sky was already getting light at this time) to see the sunrise at West Quoddy Lighthouse, which was an amazing experience! In the light of the morning we saw just how much pet hair was on the floors, and it was pretty gross, but by then we were leaving, heading out for our next adventure. This is my advice to anyone booking the Cabin at West Quoddy Station: check your expectations. We didn't experience any of the spaces other than the Cabin, so this review is only for that particular building. The Cabin IS quite primitive, it smells very musty, and the level of clean was not to our personal satisfaction. But if you're up for some history and adventure and as my husband says "you don't mind feeling like you're staying in some random guy's hunting cabin", you might find yourself having an adventure in an historic building at one of the most beautiful spots in the U.S. read more

We stayed in Crews Quarters. Aside from the dust throughout the place, it was a cute house and would have been a fun family rental with a beautiful view had the weather been warmer. Unfortunately, this building is not adequately heated. Both the primary heater and a gas-powered ceramicwood stove are located in the main room. We couldn't get the ceramic stove to fire an actual flame beyond the pilot light so we had only the main heater, which didn't even really warm up the main room very well. The bedrooms were freezing and, therefore, miserable for sleeping even with extra blankets. The mattress on my bed was average but not super comfortable. It is really close and convenient for early morning access to the lighthouse to watch the sunrise and hike the park land. read more

I'm always on the hunt for something different and unique...this place is just that! Located off the beaten path, perfect for a few days of relaxation, visiting the area attractions and/or just enjoying the beautiful views the area has to offer. West Quoddy Station was formerly a fire station. The owner, Bill, has transformed this place into a little paradise...Maine style! The rooms are cozy, spacious and have a kitchen just in case you want to make a meal instead of driving to one of the local restaurants. There is additional information in the room(s) about the room and what's available to include information about the local area. There is free Wi-Fi to do your own research, or for whatever, as well. Bill has built a lookout and the views are amazing! You can watch the sunrise or sunset easily from the lookout and be out of the elements (no, you can't see the lighthouse from there). In addition, there is a wonderful balcony outside for taking in the sunset...or just get some fresh air. The check in/out process is different, but it makes sense. You should receive an email with directions, but apparently I missed that email. In short, there will be a note on the main door to the entrance of the building you are staying with further directions. Read the note addressed to you, go to your room and Viola!!! Lucky for us Bill was there and showed us to our room and explained the process. I'm glad he was there anyway because he is/was very informative about the area in addition to the information provided in the room(s). Not to mention seeing the office/his home he built to look old is amazing! If he's not there...I'm confident you (anyone) can figure it out. It is also located less than a mile from the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse if you plan to visit, explore or take in a sunrise. The downtown area of Lubec is about 10-12 minutes away. Campobello, New Brunswick, Canada is about 15 minutes away across the International Bridge. Please note: West Quoddy Station is privately owned and not part of the park system where the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is located. Likewise, the lighthouse is not part of West Quoddy Station and you can't spend the night there. West Quoddy B&B is a great alternative to a hotel which consists of a remodeled station house and a few cottages. I was happy to stumble across it recently in an effort to explore Lubec and surrounding environs. We stayed in the Lodge building which was a nice setup that included a kitchenette and a spacious room with two queen beds and a couch. It would have made a nice weekly rental, although I probably would have tried to book one of the cottages for that. As someone mentioned on another review site, this is not actually a B&B since they don't offer breakfast, but it is a very quaint spot in a historic building (if you're in the Lodge or the Station House). It has fantastic views looking onto Quoddy Narrows, or the area between West Quoddy and Campobello Island and Lubec's downtown. Our room, the Jefferson, was very, very clean and was pretty well-equipped for proper cooking. It has a full stove, a sink, a microwave, a toaster, a coffeemaker and a fridge. It also has a complement of utensils like cutlery, cookware and a cutting board. I would definitely go back. We were lucky enough to get the off-season rate which made it a good deal. I would have to think twice about going for the full price, however. read more

My husband stumbled upon this place as he was looking for a "unique" place for our family of four to stay during our visit to Lubec. We stayed at the West Quoddy Station (a vacation rental converted from previous coast guard station) for two nights, and it was different and quiet pleasant stay overall. The room we booked was very spacious, there were two queen size beds, one bed room, a spacious bathroom, no tub, just shower, and a full kitchen. We did not utilize the kitchen much, just the fridge, but all the utensils was available and you can definitely cook up a hearty meal with the pots and pans. The view from the bedroom and the living room was gorgeous, and if you happen to be there during sunset, it is quiet a sight. My only complaint is the check in process, or the lack there of? The building that house the front office was closed when we arrived around 2pm in the afternoon. We drove a bit further to the main house and saw same patrons putting away their luggage. Upon engaging in conversation with them, we realized that there is a note left for us with a message and our assigned room. I only hope this is communicated to us several days before our arrival, since cell connection in this part of the nation is sketchy... (somehow it is considered Canada on my cell network) in case we need to clarify anything with the manager. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and would recommend it to others who doesn't want to be in the "downtown" part of Lubec. read more
