The vintage feel creeps through with funny 1950's posters lining the walls. "Unattended children will receive and espresso and a free kitten" had to be my favourite. The other detail that really impressed me was the "what happened on this day in 1950?".. this was a compilation of all the events that happened on 'this day' 64 years ago. How clever!! So much effort, so much heart, so much dedication. I will try my best to come here to support this business whenever I'm in Carina Heights. Nothing fancy about this place. Their menu is pretty excessive - so you have options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you like. My husband and I opted for the "Cajun Wedges with sour cream and guacamole" to share as our afternoon snack (we had a small breakfast and no lunch). The servings were heapful, and I'm impressed that we even had some of the sour cream and guacamole left over! Guacamole is very lemony, which I like. Staff were friendly and when I had enquired if they could make a "Dirty Chai" for me, the cashier checked with me by explaining what it is (shot of espresso coffee into a chai latte). Great! They have the menus on random tables so just grab one if you want to sit down and read it first before you order at the counter. Some bakery options, including a couple GF items (Byron Bay cookies, chocolate sticky date pudding, caramel slice when we were there).

It's based in a small, suburban shopping centre in the Coorparoo/Camp Hill area.Inside there's a deli counter and little mini grocery store (stocking high end oils, vinegars etc etc). And a huge trestle table where you can sit and sip coffee or brunch. If you're after more space, just outside you can sit in the cafe's "extension", which is quite spacious, airy and has huge French windows that open out. Unfortunately onto a carpark. I came here to order some gourmet salads for Christmas Day. And although they sounded amazing, creative and probably would have tasted divine - at $23.50/kilo, I had to fan myself with the menu and have a sit down. Before leaving without ordering. I have it on good authority that this is THE place that locals come for brunch on a weekend (but book a table). And the sarnies are apparently to-die-for. As is the expense, I'm sure.

Michael has set-up a noticeboard where lots of local businesses have pinned their business cards. There are also lots of posters and flyers on the walls for upcoming local events. So glad I spotted Nomad Espresso Bar on Old cleveland road, Carina today as I was driving past. It's only a small humble coffee shop but is perfect as it is. But always had a love for coffee, and so decided to open this small shop, which has now been operating for 2 months. There's a small selection of sandwiches & cakes on offer as well as one of the most beautiful teas I've ever had from Chamellia tea. The peppermint tea in particular was refreshing & calming. Super smooth & soothing. I also had a long macchiato with a chocolate ball! Yum! The single origin coffee by Dramanti roasters was smooth; fruity with notes of watermelon as well as chocolate. Delicious! Will most definitely be back! To keep up to date with opening hours, follow them on facebook as they will soon be changing times & opening a bit earlier. If you're going for breakfast they are not going to have your typical breakfast foods. But who doesn't love a lunch style menu for breakfast. Regardless, you'll have trouble deciding what to have. It's an eclectic menu and if you prefer something on the lighter side there is a bakery onsite as well. I was told the chef likes to play around when I asked about a particular biscuit/cookie. Think red velvet biscuit with marshmallow inside. The staff are very friendly and helpful giving recommendations with regard to what might satisfy your craving when you've narrowed your decision down to two. For my part there were a lot of meals with eggs which I'm very fussy about so typically just don't choose it (makes sense ). But there were a couple I just really want to try next time and was told some accommodation could be made. Having said that the ingredients in each meal are so well thought out I would really not want to change things up. Unless it was to maybe ask for the egg on the side. Will I be back. Yes definitely, even if just for a coffee and pastry. I will try to not be so excited to eat and even take some photos.

Two visits in one day. Yep, it's not what I'd planned but let's roll with it…read more Picnic might look fairly familiar as you walk into this new Camp Hill hidey-hole. There's good reason. It's the newest member of the Venzin Group family who've delivered Brisbane the likes of Green Papaya and Pawpaw Cafe. In fact, interior wise, you'll feel right at home and wonder if you're in a Pawpaw transplant. You're not although there's touches that keep it familiar. One such touch is executive chef Rory Doyle who's graces in the menu are clear. There's hearty and non-traditional breakfast menu items that all let you select breakfast and a coffee for under $20. Then there's familiar lunch items like the Picnic Burger (this had sold out by the time I headed back for lunch at 12:20pm) and gnocchi. I had the pumpkin gnocchi which was light and filling. It's good quality and again under $20 with a drink. I was pumped for time when I stopped in on my way to meetings this morning so opted for the fruit toast and a coffee. The fruit toast is the lightest I've ever tasted. It really is a fruit brioche. Paired with a light layer of Pepe Saya butter - delicious! Coffee is, as with Pawpaw, Campos but the team are consistently good baristas so the quality remains high. Like Pawpaw there was a steady flow of people and already they're experiencing weekend lines as people trek to taste the new venture. Service is fast, but done well. Granted, I visited on a Thursday but still both visits had at least several other diners in at the same time. For all the similarities, this isn't Pawpaw. It is its own cafe in its own right. Today was the first of many visits I think, and I'm looking forward to see how Picnic grows into it's name and space.
