The menu is excellent and packed with mouthwatering dishes (as well as 3 or 4 daily specials) and the surroundings are lovely. There is a daily fixed price lunch menu with 2 courses for £15.95 and 3 courses for £19.95. Despite its pedigree it's not starchy or stuffy. Gull eggs are in season so we had that and an Omelette Arnold Bennett to start and the steak & ale pie and Pierre Koffman venison for mains with a couple of side dishes each. For dessert I had the raspberry souffle which just heaven on a plate - if you go make sure you leave room for this signature dessert!

The restaurant is in the middle of nowhere and you almost rush past it on a nondescript piece of road just north of Highclere Castle, but turning into its ample parking areas, the smart cars there seem to have simply driven a few miles from the Peat Spade, another great inn. This time it wasn't full and the service was far better, but the food and drink weren't just good but exceptional, and extremely reasonable to boot. We started with a glass of house white a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc which was delicious and some very good bread and unsalted butter. I had the mussels and clams in a white wine broth which come daily up from Cornwall, and I can declare that they were the best I have ever tasted. The mussels were so fat and full that the dish could have made a meal on its own, while the clams, as ever, added a subtly the taste of the sea. The onion-rich broth was perfect and almost got finished! We then had the fish and chips, which came perfectly presented and was exceptionally delicious. One could perhaps quibble that twice or thrice cooked chips would have been even better, but these were crispy outside and fluffy inside, with a small dish of mushy peas to underline the fact that the dish was supposed to be authentic and not ersatz Belgian. Liver and bacon was pink and perfect, and could hardly have been bettered. A lemon posset followed, which was a good way of cleansing the palate after such a fine meal. I can't recommend The Yew Tree highly enough for lunch, especially with a bill (without service) of only £42 for two. There is wi-fi in the bar.

They recently went through a heavy makeover of the restaurant and now the look really matches the food. They've kept the comforting pub bar and quiet corners but also installed a family friendly restaurant area that opens onto an impressive beer garden with a two story Wendy house! But to return to the more important aspects of having a restaurant, the food is really good. The service is fast and every time i've gone they've been incredibly friendly. I've even blundered into a quiz night by total chance which was really well run (though i might be saying that as i won a bottle of wine!). Friendly, affordable, good quality, i forgot to mention the beer but there are some fine ales and bitters as well as the standard fair on tap. Good for families but also a really nice place to just sit and take your ease for a while. a real country retreat of a pub.

Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and the service is brilliant. I love the wine list, but I'm being torn away from making my way through that to try their excellent range of spirits!! They have a green and relaxing beer garden with a cool looking hut for kids (no more salt and vinegar crisps and cola by a fireplace! ), and even their own veggie patch where they grow a few herbs for the kitchen. I wish I lived closer!

Showed up at 3:15 to grab some lunch and we were told that the kitchen was closed from 3-6. We were famished and desperately in need of some food. The kid working couldn't be bothered to help us out. Google didn't mention anything about this. If you're not going to serve food in the middle of the day then maybe post it somewhere. Wish I could recommend this place but based on the service I'd say stay away. We went back down the road to the sun inn and it was fantastic.

The Fox is an amazingly cute country pub with a pub, a separate restaurant and an outdoor garden area. It's quite large and has seating for a lot of people in the garden and restaurant (which was a bit surprising due to the location, it seems in the middle of nowhere, but it was quite popular). We got a table for two, and since I was driving, I couldn't drink, but the other half had a couple of different beers, one of which was a local one. We decided to start with cheese souffles (because how often do you see one of those on the menu?) and I ordered the venison for my main. The other half went with the triple curry plate, because on Monday nights they have a special curry night where they offer three different curries. Apparently they do several nights like this as they were advertising Tuesday nights for pies (three different ones) and a Thursday steak special. Good to know. The souffles were pretty amazing. They also gave us some nice bread to go with which was great to dip in the left over cheese sauce. My main was huge! It was really tasty, although the venison was medium-well to well done, which is severely overcooked in my opinion, but it was tasty with the gravy, potatoes and spinach so I ate quite a bit of it. The Fox was an amazing find and we're already discussing trying to come back there the next time we're in the area.
